Yippee!!

Warning: Spoilers
"Flight To Atlantica" has tones of the Star Trek OS episode "The Naked Time" as the main Spectrum cast, apart from Colonel White (the uninvited!!) gather to drink a toast to Spectrum's first anniversary with champagne donated by a "well wisher". We watch the Mysteron rings of evil pass over the bottles so we know immediately, that this is not going to end well. By chance, Captain Scarlet gets his glass broken, then a supremely annoyed Colonel White appears and asks what the hell is going on....a party without inviting the supreme commander!!?? Thus, Captain Scarlet's throat remains dry.

The Mysterons announce that they're going to destroy the World Navy's Atlantica Base, a complex full of missiles and killer subs. There's a wreck near the base that needs destroying so Spectrum take on the job. The Angel pea shooters not being up to the job, Colonel White orders Captain Blue and Captain Ochre to bomb the thing. The dodgy champagne is effecting them by the time they reach Maxwell Air Base because they appear drunk and neither Captain notices that Captain Black swaps their maps and that instead of the wreck, they'll be bombing Atlantica Base!

Back at Cloudbase, EVERYONE is goofing off, even Doctor Fawn. White and Scarlet discover that the champagne contained a pesticide that makes people irrational. With Blue and Ochre flying off course, towards Atlantica Base, it's a race against the clock to stop them. With the bomber in range, White orders Scarlet to shoot them down. He eventually obeys. With the bomber about to crash, Captain Blue hits the eject buttons and he and Captain Ochre survive, but Atlantica Base is very badly damaged, so a partial victory for The Mysterons.

To show his appreciation for their efforts, Colonel White has a party celebrating Spectrum's anniversary, this time with "real champagne" carrying a Captain Scarlet label. A fairly fitting ending to a fun episode, which no doubt, Ed Bishop and Jeremy Wilkin enjoyed the most, as their characters behaved like a pair of drunks!

8/10.

Flight to Atlantica

Celebrates is first anniversary by holding a party; however, unknown to the revellers, their non-alcoholic champagne has been Mysteronised! Following the next Mysteron threat, Captain Blue and Captain Ochre fly a V17 Air Force bomber in order to destroy a dangerous wreck that is drifting towards the World Navy base at Atlantica, but the effects of the champagne affect their senses; they are taken in by Captain Black, who switches their flight-plan and sends them to attack the World Navy complex. Captain Scarlet and Colonel White realise they must stop their associates at any cost - even if it means blasting them out of the sky...

Colonel White is a right party pooper but then he is sort of gets it right. The mysteron are up to their tricks again - they never give up - and nor does our heroes. Adequate yet forgettable but the set pieces and effects are amazing, as always.

Awkward farce

"Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons" is aimed at children, and even with the dark subject matter, there will be the sillier entry on occasion.'Flight to Atlantica' is one of these. The Mysterons plan to destroy the control center for the World Navy by . . . well, by getting everyone on Cloudbase drunk and using them to bomb the secret underwater base. Picture Captains Blue and Ochre goofing around while piloting a bomber, all the while Scarlet and the Colonel race to stop them.

Injecting the show with humor worked in 'White as Snow' because there was a balance between light and serious. This one's never actually funny; the other reason I've never taken to this is Barry Gray's incidental music. It's bad.

One thing that's always bugged me about this is the celebration of Spectrum's anniversary. Wait 'til after hours and the Colonel won't throw a fit. And non-alcoholic champagne? That's more useless than decaf! If memory serves, this is the last time we see Captain Ochre. And given the right situation, he could've been an interesting character. It's unfortunate that this is his highest profile gig before signing off.
