Wicked

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is very paranormal, and Jack sees an image of Mary, which is quite poignant.

Brian and Gerry get a high dose of libido after a visit to a wicca witch, and Gerry gets it on with one of his ex-wives, and Brian with Esther. Pure, hot, jackhammer. No Don't Look Now or Basic Instinct type scenes, so you had to imagine it I guess. Definitely not for Harry Potter. Also, kind of references are made to the 666 in the Omen movies.

An oddball epiaode, entertaining though.
Sleepin_Dragon3 January 2022
The UCOS team investigate the death of a young man, a witch and member of a cult.

This is the most divisive episode of the show, it seems that people either love or hate it, it's definitely somewhat off the wall, definitely doesn't follow any of the usual conventions, enjoy it for what it is.

Personally I quite enjoyed it, I liked that it's a little different, and a but quirky, and zany, but the mystery death is almost lost among the magic and sparkle.

Some of the abstract moments feel a little out of place, but who can ever forget the antics of Brian and Gerry.

The acting is great, Derbhla Molloy and Stephanie Beecham or both terrific here, the pair get the best out of the regular four, who are equally excellent.

Not a favourite, but entertaining, 6/10.

New Tricks: Wicca Work (S3, Ep5): A cold case murder, witches, The Green Man, hallucinations, strange teas, even a touch of The Wicker Man. Well imagined, also involving a psychiatrist and a witch in the woods. Saw it on the Drama Channel. 8/10.

Is it magic or witchcraft?
4dbirds15 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
A coven of witches. A sex crazed warlock who ends up murdered--10 years ago. Jack keeps seeing visions of his dead wife. Jerry & Brian turn to tea tasting--unfortunately (or fortunately depending how you look at it) for them, the tea is doped up courtesy of their local witch. Brian's wife gets an all night workout. Where can I get some of that tea? A psychiatrist is not helping things out here either by withholding info from the team. And just how does Jack end up in the tree at the end? Not your typical episode of New Tricks. However this show is so good otherwise that if you treat this episode as the Halloween episode (as our local PBS station did), it's not that bad after all.

Mystical episode, kind of
scsaxe24 April 2022
UCOs investigates a wicca group. With magic, drugs, trees, and other associated items involved. The background makes the episode unique with good atmosphere, though the case itself proves relatively simple.

You can compare this episode to London Underground in season 11 to see how the show changed over time. This one is more fun, some humor, more character interactions/backstory from the main crew, and the weird cult group is pretty friendly in this one. London underground has more deaths, the group is more serious, and the show darker and more disturbing.

Among the witches: "Who killed Craig Rossiter?"...
Doylenf10 July 2009
AMANDA REDMAN as Det. Pullman and DENNIS WATERMAN as Gerry Standing are faced with solving the murder of a male librarian whom it turns out was a member of a Witch's Coven. Their investigation leads them on the trail of a few female members of the coven who knew the murdered man when he died ten years ago.

The episode should have been called "Who Killed Craig Rossiter?" because that's the theme of the whodunit atmosphere of the entire story. One of the female members calls him a Warlock. Another reveals that he was not the most popular member of the Witches. Still, they insist that the law of the coven was "Harm None." And before the end of the tale, we find out a bit more about him.

A couple of the detectives deal with one of the female witches who mixes them a brew of tea that causes hallucinations whereby one of them sees his dead wife and has a panic attack. Finally, Det. Pullman and the men on her squad realize that a ceremony involving a sacrificial murder is about to happen in the woods and they have to get to the scene before anything happens.

Tidy little mystery with supernatural overtones, it passes the time pleasantly while the tale gradually unravels with a few little surprises along the way. Good episode in this series.

Witches and weirdos
ArtVandelayImporterExporter20 February 2024
UCOS gets assigned a cold case of a young man who was murdered and left under a pile of leaves near a spooky tree.

Pinch-face calls in some frail weirdo, they visit the site, and she informs the crew that the victim was a witch.

Naturally, being the most grounded of the group, Gerry (Dennis Waterman) rolls his eyes at the nonsense. Jack and Brian keep more of an open mind, and set about checking out a library full of books on witchcraft. Supt. Pullman just wants to get the job done.

Problem is, all the witches keep spewing gibberish, whether they're on the Riki table or touching somebody's wrist. Jack starts getting visions, which he blames on panic attacks.

I learned to stay away from witches, vegans, nature cultists, fake medicine peddlers, and weirdos of various kinds.

'New Tricks' goes supernatural
TheLittleSongbird16 January 2018
Have always been a big fan of detective/mystery shows from a fairly young age, well since starting secondary school.

'Inspector Morse', 'A Touch of Frost', 'Midsomer Murders' (in its prime), 'Law and Order', 'Inspector George Gently', 'Criminal Minds', 'Murder She Wrote', you name them to name a few. 'New Tricks' has also been a favourite from the start (despite not being the same without the original cast in recent years). Although it can be corny at times (in an endearing sort of way) it has always been perfect for helping me relax in the evenings. Something that was needed during all the hard times endured in school.

"Wicca Work" was a pretty good episode but has never been one of my favourites, actually among the lesser episodes of the show's prime period. Being somewhat of a departure episode atmosphere-wise, it is also something of a polarising one at the same time. It's fun with some nice twists along the way but it's also very strange for 'New Tricks'. As far as the show goes, this is by quite some way the weirdest and it is very hard to discern as to whether that's a good thing or not, sometimes it works while at other times it doesn't work so well. With Sandra's last line, the viewer knows exactly where she's coming from and empathises.

For my tastes, the ending felt obvious, with too few suspects, and more silly than creepy or suspenseful. The supporting cast (non-regulars) are decent enough, but nobody stands out.

There are strengths though. Visually, "Wicca Work" looks lovely, with a brighter look but never garish and always slick and stylish with some darkness. The music is a good fit and the theme song (sung with gusto by none other by Dennis Waterman himself) is one of the catchiest for any detective/mystery show and of any show in the past fifteen years or so.

Writing is mostly intelligent, thought-provoking and classy, while also being very funny and high up in the entertainment value. A few strange spots here and there, like the denouement. There are a few neat twists and conflict, while the atmosphere has some spookiness.

A huge part of 'New Tricks' appeal is the chemistry between the four leads and their performances. The chemistry is so easy going and charming with a little tension.

One of the show's biggest delights is Alun Armstrong, achieves a perfect balance of funny comic timing and touching pathos which was maintained all the way up to his final episode. It is also lovely here to see his role in the team and skills appreciated more all the time. James Bolam's Jack is the quietest, most sensible (mostly) and most composed of the team, with a tragic personal life that Bolam portrays very touchingly without any overwrought-ness.

The only woman on the team, Amanda Redman more than holds her own in what is essentially the boss role of the four. Dennis Waterman brings some nice levity without unbalancing things, while showing some seriousness at the same time.

In summary, pretty good but very strange. 7/10 Bethany Cox

DONT BOTHER!
davyd-0223729 December 2020
We recorded this quite innocently via freeview, not realising that the content was why we didnt view it during its 1st outing.....THERE IS NO SUCH THING as Good or Bad Witches.....everything of such things is associated with WITCHCRAFT and as such is NOT innocent....We didnt watch to the end but this is one that shouldnt have been made.......BBC going where they think our licence fee should be spent and ending up wasting it on a terrible idea which just doesnt work....STAY AWAY from such as this type of television unless you want the BBC to suck you in to the type of thing it believes.....this is NOT INNOCENT TV!

This episode sucked
racesgirl2000-122 February 2010
This episode sucked more smelly butt than Diamond Geezers and if it were up to me, they should have replaced it about one with Philip Glenister and Jack Dee as rival gangsters.

Gerry suggests that both Brian and Jack go undercover as members of Philip's mob to bring him down for a mob related murder from 1989 but Brian gets abducted by Jack Dee's mob after being mistaken for Philip and in the end, Philip blows Brian and Jack H's cover, takes both prisoner and confesses that he killed the man and would have gotten away with it to if it weren't for UCOS.

Wicca Work, what a load of old crap
