An Absolutely Beautiful Episode
seamovieman19 September 2018
For a show that started out as a smart-ass teenager making cynical comments about the world around her, this show by Season 4 has evolved into the highest form of comedy and drama. Just an absolutely beautiful episode, John Hughes would be proud.

Friend is a Four Letter Word Warning: Spoilers
Of all the "Daria" episodes, this has to be the most dramatic, along with "Boxing Daria".

This episode follows directly the events from the previous episode "Fire!" dealing with a growing tension between Jane, Daria and Tom. While there were a couple of funny moments, for the most part this episode remained serious. But I think that it was actually a good things, since it showed that the "Daria" was able to handle very well a serious storyline, telling it from a convincing perspective instead of being a cheesy drama bomb (Like most of the so-called "serious" moments from "Family Guy") Anyway, the result was quite impressive, and well done.

For some viewers, it was "disappointing" to see Daria "betraying" her best friend…But for me, it just merely showed that she, just like any other human being, has her own flaws and isn't a perfect character above everything.

The plot from this episode is followed by the movie "Is It Fall Yet?"

Dye! Dye! My Darling...and so did the romance:(

Warning: Spoilers
"Daria? It's Tom".

That was the final line of this heart wrenching episode, which was the season 4 finale. The end credits ended with a different song, so it was A Very Special Episode which was part of the season 4 story arch of Tom's relationship with first Jane, and then Daria, with Tom and Daria locking lips towards the end of this episode.

I do wonder if Daria was being passive-aggressive about Jane's relationship with Tom. Hmmm. Season 5 will be fascinating seeing Daria, Tom and Jane! Kind of like a Daria, Jane and Tom too.

Daria's relationship with her mother was touching, as Daria confides in her about her feelings for Tom and Jane.

The Daria-Jane feud comes to a head...
planktonrules11 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Through most of season four (beginning with the final episode of season three), there was an undercurrent of tension between Daria, Jane and her boyfriend, Tom. While at first Daria hated Tom, through season four it became obvious that a friendship and perhaps more was blooming between them. And, towards the end of the fourth season, Jane and Tom began to drift apart--leading to this inevitable confrontation episode of "Daria".

Jane wants Daria to help her dye her hair. Despite Daria's repeated complaints that she has no idea how to do this, Jane forces this--with horrible results. Jane is a bit unreasonable here and blames Daria. However what happens next is clearly Daria's (and Tom's) fault. In the next portion, Daria and Tom are talking about how Daria doesn't want to become anything more than friends with Tom because she cares so much for her friend, Jane. Well, in the middle of this, she and Tom end up kissing...twice! Daria feels horrible about this and tells Jane--who then wants to kill her! This leads to a break in their friendship--one that is worked out in the subsequent movie "Is it Fall Yet?".

This particular episode of "Daria" isn't particularly funny--and isn't meant to be. Instead, it's very important to the relationship between Daria and her best friend--and is successful in getting this issue to the fore. Interesting and well worth seeing...but not funny.

Daria's friendship with Jane hits a new low
Tweekums16 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Early on in this episode it looks as if things may be getting better between Jane and Tom as we see Daria catches them kissing! Soon afterwards Jane asks Daria to help her with her latest project; she wants to dye her hair in tiger-stripes. Daria protests that she isn't confident in her abilities but Jane insists. The results are inevitably terrible and Jane explodes; blaming Daria, even going as far as suggesting that she did it deliberately because she was jealous of Jane's relationship with Tom. After a day or so they make up and Daria insists she has no interests in Tom... minutes later she is kissing him; it looks as if her friendship with Jane is going to be irreparably damaged.

This episode doesn't have many laughs, apart from Jake ranting about killing squirrels. It does however have plenty of drama which was handled in a realistic rather than melodramatic way. After Daria's unreasonable behaviour earlier in the season it was Jane's turn to be unreasonable although under the circumstances it was understandable. Seeing Daria and Tom kiss came as quite a surprise even though events have been leading them closer; now it looks as if they may become a couple; I just hope her friendship with Jane can survive. Overall I'd say this was a quality episode that demonstrates animation can do drama.

Daria needs her mom
rgxdzrybr3 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I know episode is about the strained friendship between Daria and Jane over Tom . No one is all good or bad in this situation . They all try to avoid it but when it comes out surprisingly they still remain friends . It's just not going to be like it was for a while. That said Jane and Tom were slowly drifting apart. The previous episode for example Tom and Daria like to discuss things Jane is bored by.

Still Daria was worried about losing her only friend and went out of her way to seek Helen's help and advice. The interesting part is it happened after Daria and Jane talk . Helen as often happens and proves to be more insightful than is often given credit for.

One of the most awkward moments is Daria trying to tell Jane she is no good at coloring hair which is what Jane asks her to do. Daria is not wrong it's a disaster but it only makes the growing tension between them worse.

On a personal note I could relate to Daria it's not something everyone can do.

Overall a well written episode that doesn't make anyone the bad guy but brings out the complexities of the relationship dynamics.
