I wasn't expecting to shed a tear at the end
trobertt-15-2211220 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't think the episode was hokey or sappy at all. I like the look of amazement of Hugh Beaumont's face when he is expecting a baseball mitt in the package at the end.

There are no price tags on love.

Warning: Spoilers
The boys get a gift from Ward, a piggy bank so they can save their change and learn about thrift. Come on, what kid even had small change they could save. As time goes by, the pig gets fatter—heavier—so they get the money out to buy baseball gloves.

When Ward finds them with the pig money he suggests they put the money in their school bank account. Better to learn to save, he points out he wants a new hunting jacket but you don't see him wasting money. June isn't happy that Ward manipulated the boys, it was their money and they should have been allowed to do with it as they wanted. Ward is still a bit smug on how well his plan went. On the way to school, the boys are looking for their jackets in the closet when they find Ward's old hunting jacket. They decide to buy him a new jacket. As Wally says, parents can't spend their money on useless things, they have to buy food and stuff.

Mrs. Rayburn calls Ward because the boys were caught leaving the school grounds to go shopping. Worse, the boys didn't deposit the money in their school bank accounts. Ward is more upset that they didn't deposit the money then he is about their leaving school.

Wally and Beaver find they don't have enough money for the jacket but Wally has a plan on how to get the money. Mrs. Rayburn calls, the boys stopped by and withdrew money from their bank accounts. At dinner, the table is quiet as no one has anything to say. Ward keeps asking about the money, did they or didn't they deposit the money. Ward is fuming when he can't get a straight answer. And when a package arrives for the boys from the most expensive sporting goods shop in town, Ward is really upset. Until he finds the package isn't baseball gloves, it is a hunting jacket for him. You can pretty much figure out the rest of the scene played out.

A nice show. The boys were fortunate they were able to surprise their father at their age with a gift of something he really wanted. Most children, even as adults struggle to find something to buy their father to show their gratitude and love. Many fathers don't leave accidental clues as Ward did. I wish they did. Nothing would have given me greater pleasure than an opportunity to have presented my father or my wife's dad with just the right gift. I guess we have to hope those hugs and kisses were enough.

Wait for it - it's coming

Warning: Spoilers
A great heart warming episode. Be prepared for the tears to star flowing at the end. If this one doesn't get em flowing no episodes will. However I think it was a little bit of a stretch for the very young Wally and Beaver to be that unselfish and spend their own money on a very expensive hunting jacket for their Dad. All the cast is really starting to show their great acting chops in this episode. I prefer season 6 but this first season has some really great jewels. Later on the episodes start to get a little dull but every now and then a great episode comes out of the blue. Especially;;y in season 6 when Eddie Haskel and/or Lumpy Rutherford are featured more and more. I really think a couple more seasons when Beaver got his driver's license and Wally started college would have really worked great. Oh well we get what we got.

The boys teach the parents a lesson in love and trust
banj0man1 June 2022
Ward and June are dubious as to the boys' intentions when they raid their savings account.

Perhaps Hugh Beaumont's best performance as Ward Cleaver.

Not one of the better plots and takes time to unfurl, but the ending is indeed memorable and should cause your eyes to water.

Even Ward Cleaver can be wrong occasionally!

Warning: Spoilers
Father Ward Cleaver manages to get himself pretty steamed-up over what he THINKS his boys have done with some money they've managed to save-up. Ward ends-up looking like a jerk when the truth turns-out to be much different than he thought. Good episode for sure.

Ward eats the entire humble pie
AlsExGal27 April 2024
Ward and June buy Wally and Beaver a piggy bank. After a few months there is over thirty dollars in it, a hefty sum in 1958. On bank day - a day in which kids bring their money to school and put it in their bank accounts - Beaver and Wally leave with the money from the piggy bank to put in their accounts. But Miss Rayburn, the principal, calls twice to the Cleaver household. The first time is to say that Beaver and Wally left the school without permission at midday, and the second time is to tell Ward that neither put any money in their bank accounts that day, that in fact they both withdrew money!

Ward is steamed. He says it's because the boys lied to him and because he suspects they wasted fifty dollars on baseball mitts based on a previous conversation they had, but it is really because the boys didn't take his advice and save their money. Complications ensue, but let's just say Ward eats the entire humble pie.

Piece by piece, there was nothing special about this episode, but the end makes the entire episode worth it as it is very heartwarming.

Hokey, and sappy done well.

Predictable script. But the thing here is the strong family structure, and loving parents. Special, emotional performance by Hugh Beaumont.

The Cleaver Boys And Their Money Warning: Spoilers
(*Ward Cleaver quote*) - "Of course I want you to think it over and make up your own minds."

Ward gives Wally and Beaver a piggy bank to encourage them to save money.

Over time the boys manage to save more than $30.

In stead of buying themselves baseball mitts, Wally and Beaver decide to buy their dad a new hunting jacket.

Ward is deeply touched by the boys' thoughtfulness.

Apparently spending money is a bigger crime than skipping school.
deblc-9133414 January 2023
I realize that this was a different time, but I'm confused about something. The boys said they were going to sneak out the girls door. A little while later, Mrs. Rayurn phones their home and says they left school without permission. She explains that they told their teachers that they were going shopping That's not sneaking out, that's playing hooky, and if they didn't have permission why didn't their teachers stop them? Then when Ward and Mrs. Rayburn and are talking, they are more concerned about the money than where the boys are. Later Mrs. Rayburn calls back, she allowed them to withdraw more money and apparently didn't reprimand or punish them for leaving school.

The end of the episode is wonderful and heartwarming, but it teaches the lesson that it's all right the skip school for a good reason?
