Plot summary
ynot-1611 October 2008
Kimble is working at a liquor store in a town where there recently have been robberies and killings at liquor stores. Herbie Grant (actor Warren Oates) comes in the store, points a gun at Kimble, and announces a robbery. Kimble coolly tries to discourage the robber, telling him the register is empty and he does not know the combination to the safe. Herbie starts to leave when the store owner comes from the back and shoots Herbie, wounding him in the leg. Herbie escapes.

When Kimble goes on a delivery, he finds Herbie in the back seat, asking for help at the point of a gun. Herbie insists that while guilty of this robbery, he had nothing to do with the other robberies where people were killed. As the episode proceeds, Kimble gets more involved with Herbie, and his sister Lorna Grant (actress Virginia Vincent). Lorna is torn by her distrust of Herbie and contempt for his low character (she calls him a rat), and her desire to help her brother. Meanwhile, the police, including Lt. Santelli (actor Malachi Throne) are investigating the matter, making Kimble quite uncomfortable.

Between police searching hard for Herbie, and Herbie's treachery, Kimble faces tough challenges to keep his promises, live up to his own ideals, and yet escape the police.

Kimble feels sorry for one of the most inept and pathetic criminals of all time....

When the show begins, 'Dan' (Richard Kimble using yet another alias) is working at a liquor store for a real jerk-face. Soon Herbie (Warren Oates) comes into the place and tries to hold them up...but Dan recognizes that the guy isn't loaded and tells him that! Herbie then leaves the place with nothing...and the nasty owner comes out of the backroom and shoots the guy as he's leaving peaceably! Told you he was a jerk-face! It turns out there has been a string of liquor store robberies...but Herbie sure doesn't seem like the type.

On his way to make a delivery, Dan gets into the business' car...and Herbie is hiding in the backseat. He pulls a gun on Dan...but, remember, the gun isn't loaded. So Dan does nothing and tells Herbie to get lost...and he wanders off and Dan completes his delivery. Is this the last he's seen of Herbie? And, what's next for him?

This is a decent episode and easily illustrates the saying "No good deed goes unpunished"! Worth seeing...just so you can see Oates in one of more pusillanimous roles.

Kimble is a clerk in a liquor store that gets robbed. The garrulous boss shoots the robbery, who escapes. The police think the guy is the same man who has previously robbed and skilled two store owners. Kimble has a car to make deliveries and finds the wounded robber, Herbie, (Warren Oates), hiding in it. He forces Kimble to put him up in his hotel room. Kimble wants as little contact with the police as possible but doesn't want to be found harboring a fugitive. But the guy is wounded and he claims not to have been the one who committed those other robberies. Thus, like Kimble, he may be falsely accused. To further complicate matters, Herbie contacts his sister, who works in the post office and recognizes Kimble from his wanted poster. Herbie gets recognized and captured. He thinks Kimble turned him in. He also is told that there's a $5,000 reward for Kimble's capture. You think you got problems?

Rat Herbie

Warning: Spoilers
Rat in the Corner is another favorite of mine from season one. Kimble grudgingly helps pathetic loser and small time criminal Herbie after he's shot holding up a liquor store with an unloaded gun.

Being the good doctor that he is, Kimble cares for Herbie's gunshot wound and tries to send him on his way afterwards, but Herbie refuses to leave his hotel room until he agrees to pawn off his sister's diamond ring for him first.

It's clear that Kimble can't stand the guy and angrily calls him a rat to his face which seems to slightly hurt Herbie's feelings. He's that much of an ignorant that he's totally unaware how his actions make the people around him not like him.

His long suffering sister Lorna is a much more together and nicer person than her brother is and by the end of the episode Kimble becomes friends with her but he still dislikes rat Herbie even after Herbie helps him get away from the police. Before fleeing, he looks only to Lorna to say "Thank you" and not towards Herbie....and rightfully so because not 5 minutes later he's chasing after the departing police to babble Kimble's whereabouts for reward money he thinks he's going to get. I guess Kimble sensed "once a rat, always a rat" and knew he deserved no thanks.

Both Herbie and Lorna's characters were fleshed out very nicely and played wonderfully by Warren Oates and Virginia Vincent and I really enjoyed both of their performances, especially Vincent's.

In the fourth Act, I sensed there were romantic feelings for Kimble coming from Lorna at the very end by the way she looks at him in the abandoned Kitty Club. Nothing is outwardly done or spoken to acknowledge this, but I just observed it on her face when she's looking at him in the club for a second and then she quickly seems to snap herself out of it.

It's very subtly done and I wonder if it was something the actress did on her own doing or if it was directed of her to convey that emotion on her face. Watch the scene and see for yourself and decide if i'm seeing something that isn't there...but I believe it is and a testament to Vincent's great acting of the role.

In the Epilogue, we learn that poor pathetic Herbie is apparently still up to his small time criminal antics when he's hitting up his long suffering sister at work for money. It's pretty clear that this character is never going to change his ways and his long suffering sister will sadly continue to be there for him and clean up his messes. I think it's yet another great episode of a wonderfully done first season.
