Coach in Love: Part 2 (#3.7)
ComedyFan201010 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
After winning lottery Irene keeps on postponing the wedding with coach and one day she comes in to cancel it. But Coach still believes that she will come back on their wedding day. Sam calls Irene's daughter and finds out that Irene is now engaged to some rich guy. Coach still doesn't want to accept it, but on the wedding day she doesn't show up and he has to deal with it.

Poor Coach! The whole episode was breaking my heart because he believed so much that Irene will be back. But the final scene when Diane doesn't let Sam pick up the phone and just believe like Coach does that it is Irene was very moving.

I also really liked how they kept everyone up with what happened in the previous episode by showing them at home talking about it to their families.

Cheers At Its Most Bittersweet

Part 2 of Coach In Love reaches its inevitable conclusion, leaving the audience incredibly sad for our beloved Ernie. The object of his affection Irene is barely in this episode, which deals mostly with the gang gently trying to get Coach to "wake up and smell the coffee."

This episode features some of Nicholas Colasanto's best acting. Coach is such a kindhearted guy that he can't even blame Irene for rejecting him, but that doesn't mean he accepts it. It's not surprising that there aren't a lot of laughs here. The funniest parts are the inventive way of recapping the events from the previous show (including a voice cameo from Frasier, otherwise MIA) and Sam's increasingly pathetic attempts to hook up with Sue. Coach has a sweet and funny moment where he explains why a pizza is no substitute for a lover. But in the end, this episode just leaves our crew and the audience very sad.

Heart-breaking

Warning: Spoilers
Coach is such an amazing character. This episode moves away from the humor you would expect of Cheers, but it is still fantastic. Nicolas Colasanto will break your heart, he is so lovable. It's hard to believe a man who died when I was 5 years old can continue to affect me decades later, but this episode is part of that. We love you Coach and in an episode where it is considered that someone could not love you we see this as fantasy. The woman who loses Coach is the loser. To me, this is one of the defining Coach episodes. He embodies what we all want in a mentor or big brother. She lost, Coach. She lost.

Creative Episode

This one begins with discussion of what is going on with the Coach. Each major character is in his or her house, describing what happened. Then we go to the bar where Coach is fully optimistic that the woman who won the lottery would still want to marry him. There is some decent byplay along the way. Coach is the eternal optimist.
