PICK YOUR POISON.

MANNIX had his fair share of eccentric clients, we all can agree on that, so it's no surprise Cannon would get stuck with a few. Case in point, he connects with a strange guy named Quill (played by Clu Gulagher). Quill did some undercover work for the CIA --at least that's what he claims --then was bounced into prison. Now released, he hires a hitman to end it all. Suddenly, he CHANGES his mind?

Everything is dumped in Cannon's lap and he has to sort out a rather embarrassing case. I always thought this story also sounded like an episode from the ROCKFORD FILES. Jim Rockford had his fill of offbeat clients too. Cannon gives Quill a drink, though I think he needs it more, as you will see.

Clu Gulagher, who we lost at age 93 last year, was a dynamic actor, typically playing bad men in westerns. This was his third appearance on the series and he's very good.

The real villain here is Monte Markham (as Ed), pretending to be a CIA agent, and wrecking Quill's life in the process. Markham, a few years earlier, played a revamped PERRY MASON on tv, but was often cast in bad guy roles, similar in style to Leslie Nielson. At this time, he was one of the most popular actors on tv.

Look for Lloyd Gough as Paul. He will always be remembered to all of us GREEN HORNET fans as Mike. Gough and William Conrad were old acting pals, having both appeared in the legendary boxing film, BODY AND SOUL (1947). This was his second appearance on the show.

Alf Kjellen does a fine job directing, and wait for the ending. Kjellen, a former Swedish actor, was cranking out episodes for HAWAII FIVE O. The only debit is he wasn't cast here, because he played some nasty villains. Also associated with MISSION IMPOSSIBLE as an actor. Best remembered playing the Russian commander in the cult film ICE STATION ZEBRA (1968).

Nancy Malone plays Quill's wife, an excellent actress who also has some good scenes. Around this time, she branched out into directing and later became a successful producer.

There's a cat and mouse shootout in the hills surrounding Griffith Park Observatory, always fun no matter what. The park is an incredible place to film; rolling hills, cliffs and lots of sharp curves for any cop show car chase. A neat place to visit, and what a view.

SEASON 4 EPISODE 22 remastered color CBS box set. 6 dvds. 21 hrs. 2016 release.

Jonathan Quill...first class idiot!

Jonathan Quill (Clu Gulager) is a very gullible person. A guy approached him some time ago and said that the CIA would like him to be a courier. After all, he travels a lot and could be invaluable to the agency. Without really questioning or investigating, he agreed...and was soon captured and sent to prison for two years. Amazingly, he STILL thinks these folks were CIA!!

Here's where the story starts to get really dumb. Following his time in prison and a divorce, he's feeling depressed and pays some hit-man to kill him (a clichéd plot idea if I've ever heard one). But he then has a change of heart. He hires Cannon to find the killer and stop him but Cannon is more concerned with figuring out WHO these folks were as the project seems nothing like something the CIA would do.

Why does this one merit a 4? Well, the plot is quite simply very dumb and it's hard to imagine a guy as dumb as Quill. To make it much worse, an assassin arranges an exchange and clearly he's also going to kill Quill...yet he bungles it. The guy has a high powered rifle and scope but when Cannon gives chase, he drops the gun and uses a pistol! The rifle was a HUGE advantage...and yet he throws it away...just like that! Overall, a sloppy and silly episode.
