Bobby is dead and, sadly, the world is probably a better place as a result.

Bobby spend his entire life using everyone around him. He was a no good thief and con man...yet, inexplicably, a desperately sad woman hires Cannon to find his killer. She insists that he really did love her...despite a long, long record of using everyone around him. Cannon is very kind towards her and agrees to investigate even though very little money can be had in solving the case.

What follows is a nice little portrait of a sociopath as well as the family that manages to make excuses and are extremely co-dependent. It also has an interesting subplot involving a cop who hates Cannon and turns out to be extremely dirty and involved in Bobby's death. Worth seeing.

"You'll Get Yours, Fatso!"

There are several things about this episode that are part of the legacy of "Cannon".

The episode starts out with the most prominent. Whenever an episode of "Cannon" needed music that vaguely sounded like the rock and roll of the time, terrible music featuring a saxophone was played. This music was used in multiple episodes, and never gets better. It sounds vaguely like something that the old Saturday Night Live band would have played into a commercial.

Second, there are multiple jokes about Cannon's weight. One wonders how this show would go over in modern times when "body positivity" has somehow superseded concerns about diabetes and heart disease.

Lastly, Cannon's incredible ability, despite his physical limitations, to narrowly escape a threat to his life. I'll leave it there, and let the viewer see what I mean.

I give this episode nine stars not because it's riveting television, but because there is a scene about 15 minutes in where Cannon falls down a flight of steps. I showed this to a friend of mine, and I have never heard him laugh so hard in his entire life. Just that one scene makes this episode worth the price of admission.

THE CON WHO WAS CONNED AND PAID A PRICE.

The good, the bad and the UGLY, Cannon style.

An dynamic episode, combining both sentimental elements and the psychological, well done by series director Laurence Dobkin. He did a fantastic job with this cast, particularly guest star Collin Wilcox. Dobkin was another director quite popular for his style, associated with such shows as EMERGENCY, MOD SQUAD and the WALTONS for many seasons.

To dig a bit deeper into the psychological here, credit writer Joel Murcott, who wrote many classic stories for Alfred Hitchcock's tv shows.

Here, Cannon goes up against some nefarious types, and if that's not enough, his client needs psychoanalysis, as she can be both a danger to herself and others. A possible Emmy nominated story all about a lonely teacher named Vera (memorably played by Collin Wilcox) who hires Cannon to nab the killer of her "sometimes" boyfriend. That said, the relationship was not that cozy (no matter how she spins it) due to the fact that he was the ultimate con. This episode is another one ahead of its time.

Collin Wilcox was an established actress, best known for her dynamic role as Maynella in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. This was her second appearance on the series, having worked for her old boss William Conrad at Warner Brothers/ABC on the western series TEMPLE HOUSTON in the 60s.

Joel Murcott burned the midnight oil and developed some desperate characters with a good cop/bad cop angle. Look for Pippa Scott as the dragon lady -- at odds with Cannon also, and about to shoot him.

This is also the famous episode where Cannon takes a fall down a flight of stairs (thanks to yet another creep), and yes, that is Bill Conrad doing the stunt, trying to keep up with Mannix every now and then. That scene has gotten a lot of airplay.

Many familiar faces here, such as DRAGNET regular Virginia Gregg. The small town where this all takes place is Fillmore, CA, about 25 miles east of Ventura, near Piru. SEASON 3 EPISODE 24 remastered color CBS dvd box set. 2012.
