I hate to admit it, but it's true: I failed you guys last month. I don't say that because I ultimately recommended you check out a couple of stinkers in May's monthly movie preview (we'll get to that in a moment), but rather because, of the five movies I mentioned as "must-sees", I actually only saw two of them. I led last month's post with the caveat that there wasn't much of note coming out during May, but still, if I'm gonna recommend movies I should probably watch 'em too, and I vow to do so from now on. Unless I change my mind. Or run out of money. Or everyone else tells me they're bad and that I should run for the hills and avoid them forever. Point is, I'll try. Not to make excuses, but I did have a lot going on last month. I finished grad school,...

The May 1 release of Avengers: Age of Ultron marks the "official" start of the 2015 Summer Movie Season and with that in mind, it's only appropriate to offer up a look forward at what's ahead over the next four months. What is ahead over the next four monthsc Well, a lot of movies that cost a lot of money with a few smaller features mixed in for good measure, and as much as some of us may lament the fact studios have become so franchise focused, it's hard not to admit a desire to see some of these bigger features. As a means of whittling down the flock of films arriving over the next several months I've chosen to take a look at my 20 most anticipated, which does mean there are bound to be some titles I probably ought to mention, but didn't make the list for a variety of reasons.

Full disclosure: Benjamin Shearn is a former contributor to The Playlist, so yes, this exclusive trailer belongs to someone who used to write for us. That being said, it seems we' re lucky enough to have some great talent pass through our doors (see Christopher Bell's trailer for "The Winds That Scatter"), and "Silk" is certainly something that grabbed our attention. Shaern's film centers on 100% Silk, the an independent electronic dance music label, and chronicles the June 2012 that saw four core acts from the shingle—La Vampires, Ital, Magic Touch, and Maria Minerva – head out on tour together through the U.K., Europe, and beyond. Capturing the performances, cultural environments and more, the documentary leans toward a more expressionistic portrait of the scene, with pacing and editing mirroring that of house albums that keep the clubs going all night long. That is certainly evident in this nearly three-minute trailer,...

Full disclosure: Christopher Bell is a former contributor to The Playlist, so yes, we're promoting the work of someone on the site. But you know what? We're more than happy to, especially when it looks this compelling. Those of us around The Playlist water cooler kinda of knew Chris was working on something—and he has numerous shorts under his belt already—but we had no idea that "The Winds That Scatter" would look anything like this. We're happy to exclusively unveil the first trailer for the film, which seems to meet somewhere at the crossroads of Ramin Bahrani and the Dardennes. A close collaboration between Bell, his director photography Paul Taylor, and actors Ahmad Chahrour and Mohammad Dagman, the story follows Ahmad, an immigrant from Syria, who dreams of starting his own taxi service. When he loses his job at a gas station, his optimistic attempts to navigate...

Full disclosure: Christopher Bell is a member of The Playlist family (even though he's not currently an active journo any longer), but he's also a budding filmmaker with some skill to boot, and with a new short film under his belt, we figured it might be nice to reciprocate all he's done for us and give him a little shine. “Bridges” is about a young woman (Joslyn Jensen) who faces a great dilemma. As a babysitter, Elizabeth’s top priority is the safety of her young charge Julian (Julian Perez), an adorable baby boy who doesn’t want his peas and smiles at his toy car. With her boss being a full-time working single mother, whose absence is made poignantly clear by being only a vocal presence in the film, Elizabeth becomes de facto mother/father/carer for Julian. When safety at the apartment is threatened, Elizabeth, like a mother bird,...

From the queens to the commoners, everyone knew their place on the red carpet this year

First, if I can make a fashion editor's speech of my own: the Oscars are all about the message, and that applies to the red carpet as much as the awards. As one critic put it last week, the best picture race between The King's Speech and The Social Network came down to the Academy members making a choice between a chilly tale of money and ruthless ambition, and a heartwarming story of friendship and adversity overcome. You do the maths on that one.
The red carpet is a platform for female actors to get a message across about who they are. Beauty is part of it, but it's more than that: the dream is to get...

It’s some kind of Universal Truth that people obsess about female celebrities who shave their heads. Remember how Cassie’s curiously half shaved head prompted a major debate on Twitter and a wisecrack from Fabolous about Edward Scissorhands? So it makes perfect sense that Jennifer Hudson’s InStyle cover story, about her fabulous life and transformation from a “16 to a svelte size 6,” is being eclipsed by her comment that she’s thinking about shaving her head to show off her sexy cheekbone structure. Yes, she’s only “thinking” about it. But now that she’s teased her fans about making a date with hair clippers, she almost has to go through with it. So allow us to jump the gun and get this debate started early. Jennifer Hudson with a shaved head: Hot or not? Full disclosure: the above pic is actually a hybrid of Jennifer Hudson’s...
