S10 Reviews: Bound by Lies (2004)
suspiria1025 April 2005
Max Garrett (Stephen Baldwin) is a cop on a seriously thin rope. Garrett returns from a six month suspension t0 robbery / homicide only to get involved in a homicide case involving a sexy artist (Kirsty Swanson), who may be more than just an innocent witness. Garrett uncovers kinkiness that may well put his life and family in danger.

"Bound by Lies" is a simple straight-to-video police thriller. Full of clichés and C-list stars. Not to bad, about the equivalent of a film you see on late night cable. Good looking stars sprinkled with a little smut with a better than usual polished look to it. The plot is standard and the acting is fair but at least the original Buffy is in it.

This movie stinks
mrudyk28 April 2005
I just saw a copy of this movie and it was awful. Nice camera work and clean edits made for a vast comparison with the weak plot and horrible acting by these b-movie stars. The only thing one could hope for is to see Kristy Swanson get naked, which she didn't even do (three years after her Playboy shoot she has packed on a few more pounds which is probably the reason!)

To even think of this movie as a thriller is impossible: the focus is more on the Baldwin and Swanson characters rather than developing a true thriller plot of who is killing all these people.

Overall don't waste two hours of your time, life is far too valuable.

C-Grade "Thriller"
boyinflares25 November 2005
There isn't much to say about this C-Grade "thriller" really. Released as "Betrayed" in New Zealand, the DVD cover which is a homage to "Basic Instinct" is somewhat misleading, for while "Basic Instinct" was no masterpiece, it wasn't as terrible as this film. The plot is very weak, the settings plastic, the score terrible and the dialogue cheesy. The leads, Stephen Baldwin and Kristy Swanson are just going through the motions, though they do hold the film together, and Swanson looks very healthy. The rest of the cast are appalling, in particular the actors that play Baldwin's wife and fellow detective. So unless you want to watch C-Grade "thrillers" then don't actively seek out this film.

like a late-night Cinemax 'erotic thriller' WITHOUT the titillation
movieman_kev4 May 2005
In this strictly paint-by-numbers direct to video thriller, Detective Max Garret (Stephen Baldwin) is assigned to protect Laura Cross (Kristy 'I STILL refuse to get nude' Swanson). Of course even though he's married to a stunning women, he feels chemistry with Laura and vice versa. It's not really that interesting when red herrings are thrown at the viewer AFTER you know who the killer is. This film was tedious to sit through and extremely uninvolving. All the actors were just going through the paces. When i found out one of the writers was responsible for the dreck known as "Naked Lies" it all clicked into place. No wonder the film was so bad. It's like a Skinamax erotic thriller WITHOUT the sex (there IS one scene but it's VERY tame) IE. totally worthless.

Eye Candy: Gladys Jimenez gets topless, but her scenes in "Blowback" were better

My Grade: D-

I could barely have it on for background noise!
sandliver14 October 2005
This clunker-stinker was just on ShowTime Too ... thank goodness I was actually working on the computer! Just hearing the insipid banter, throughout this waste of celluloid, was enough to make me actually BEG my wife to turn it off. She replied: (many times) "I can't turn away from this train-wreck!" And, yes, as noted by another poor reviewer who lost two hours of his life; even a bloated Kristy Swanson couldn't rescue this film version of nails on a blackboard. And as for Baldwin ... I don't think any explanation is needed? I would suggest that two hours of watching the Weather Channel is time better spent; you might actually catch a plot line and the ending will be far better!

Rip-off of "Someone to Watch Over Me"
claudio_carvalho3 September 2006
After a suspension of six months for disrespect to the chain of command in the police force, detective Max Garrett (Stephen Baldwin) is assigned to work with Lieutenant Eddie Fulton (Charles Malik Whitfield) in a murder case in another precinct. Both have the mission of protecting the photographer Laura Cross (Kristy Swanson) from the prime suspect of the crime, the super Gus Boyle (Kevin Chamberlin). Max is having troubles in his marriage with his wife Diana (Gladys Jimenez), who misses him, and the proximity with the gorgeous and seductive Laura is deeply affecting him.

"Betrayed" is a clear rip-off of Ridley Scott's underrated masterpiece "Someone to Watch Over Me" (1987). In both movies, there is a married detective assigned to protect a beautiful woman and falling for her. Even the situation where the wife is kidnapped by the criminal is identical. The character Max Garret is awfully developed by the weak Stephen Baldwin, and in the end worth to watch this movie only because of the beauty of thirty-nine years old Kristy Swanson, the original Buffy and the teenager Samantha of the unforgettable "Deadly Friend" and still extremely beautiful. It also calls the attention the number of different worldwide titles this forgettable movie has ("Betrayed", "Bound by Lies", "The Long Dark Kiss", "Os Mistérios de Laura Cross" ). My vote is five.

Title (Brazil): "Os Mistérios de Laura Cross" ("The Mysteries of Laura Cross")

Bound to cause boredom
lastliberal11 August 2008
There are two classes of people who will love this film - Stephen Baldwin fans and Gladys Jimenez fans. All others are bound to be bored.

Baldwin plays a cop (Max Garrett) who is dangerously close to being kicked out. He is assigned to watch Laura (Kristy Swanson) and protect her from a crazed killer. You'll know who the killer is in the first five minutes, so there are only two questions to be answered: will the killer get Laura, and will Baldwin get Swanson, who continues to remain nudity-free after 55 films.

Well, there is a third question that begs to be answered: why the heck would Garrett want Swanson when he has Gladys Jimenez at home? She has no problems showing us what made her famous in films like Blowback and Secrets of a Chambermaid. She gave that up to become a soap star, but we get another view in this film.

We know that Garrett is not gay like we suspect Dr. Doolittle is, but he certainly has his priorities crossed. Get home, jerk, Jimenez is waiting!

Bound by ... nothing
kosmasp12 April 2014
What is acting? Will you find it here? Is it too harsh judging the people involved in this, because of the script/direction? Are any of the twists worth your while? The answers to those question can only be given by yourself. And while the Baldwin involved in this, has made a name in movies like this, the question is, if you have the time and strength to watch this.

It's not that the characters are despicable from the get go. But while the movie progresses and relationships get established you do wonder, why you're still watching this. Now if you meant to watch this, because it promises sizzling erotic and/or nudity, you can also forget about that. While the main actress might appeal to many (men and women respectively), her character is all over the place and does not help the viewer understand what the other characters are going through because of her ... Not recommendable ...

A Flop...
buiger10 October 2009
Absolutely nothing to write home about. Why on earth anyone would hire Stephen Baldwin for anything is a mystery to me. He is obnoxious and he can't even act... Movies like this should use the opportunity and their low budgets to search and try out new faces, young undiscovered talent, and not to finance and sustain a large part of the Baldwin family...

And then Kristy Swanson... How on earth do you cast an actress who is so grossly overweight for a lead role in an erotic thriller? It just doesn't make sense, Hollywood is full of young aspiring actresses who would kill to have such a role and look ten times better... So then why? Is it just ignorance, or did somebody simply owe her a part in a movie...?

In other, there is not very much to say about this movie, it is simply bad, a waste of everybody's time and money. There isn't a single thing that can be saved from this horrible wreck, the screenplay is bad, the acting is bad, the directing is bad, the soundtrack, the cinematography... you name it. Unfortunately, there are many movies out there that are even worse, hence the three stars I awarded this one, otherwise I was tempted to rate it even lower...

Not a complete waste of time.
ppulliam827 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I want to start off by saying that I am a HUGE Kristy Swanson fan. I never quite understood why the girl didn't blow up and take Hollywood by storm. So, you will understand why I am a little underwhelmed by the fact that this is the only work that she gets nowadays. A friend of mine works for a video store and, as such, gets to rent prestreet videos. Well, as soon as he saw this movie come in yesterday, he knew he had to bring it over (it's released next Tuesday, April 12th). The movie, although not terrible, is completely below everyone involved. It seems to me that post Playboy, Ms. Swanson seems to feel at home with playing a "Pamela Anderson type" character whose sexuality completely overwhelms her character. The premise goes like this: Stephen Baldwin (one of the worst actors ever; doing a serviceable job here, though) plays (what else) a cop who is assigned to the investigation involving the murder of a homeless man who has been thrown off a building with wire around his neck. Of course, his investigation leads him to the tenants of the building, that include Kristy (doing her best to portray a bondage obsessed top photographer). Well, the normal hijinks ensues and Stephen's married cop character succumbs to Kristy's feminine ways, while at the same time still suspecting her for the murder. Overall, the movie lacked any sort of tension, but the direction, cinematography, and acting were all better than could be expected for such too often explored terrain. Also, anyone expecting any nudity on Kristy's behalf may want to try something else. Although she plays the role with a certain amount of conviction, it is clear that it is not that kind of conviction (which I was pleased to find). In summation, only rent this if you are in the mood for a mediocre late night film and Wild Things (or any of its sequels) are all checked out.

Watchable but derivative "erotic thriller"
gridoon28 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
"Bound By Lies" wants to be an erotic thriller and a murder mystery. It fails because it is not very erotic, not very thrilling and not very mysterious. The two stars are rather over-the-hill for the genre. Kristy Swanson is still pretty, but by no means as irresistible as she's supposed to be here. She looked really great in the mid-90's - I wish she had done this kind of role then. I wish Natassia Malthe (who plays Kristy's assistant in this film) had the leading role instead. And Stephen Baldwin is no Alec, hell he's no William either. Stephen and Kristy "do it" only once, and in that scene he shows more than her! There is an irrelevant car chase in the beginning (which was mostly lifted from another film, according to IMDb trivia), and one good scene involving a handcuffed and tied Baldwin in a bathtub, but other than that you won't find many thrills here. As for the "mystery" plot, making the most obvious suspect the actual killer can only be called "unpredictably predictable". However, I still found the film watchable enough to give it *1/2 out of 4 stars.

Bound By Lies
raztaz1219 June 2005
I am a completely biased person. I adore Stephen Baldwin and everything he does. He's just so darn cute. The "sex scene" was kind of disappointing because I wanted to see more of Stephen's hot body, but I wasn't disappointed with what I got to see. I loved the movie. If you've seen other films of Stephen's you know that he is a very versatile actor. From brooding cop(Bound by Lies) to dorky idiot(Biodome) he handles it all and does an amazing job. Hes just so damn HOT! I love that man. Bound by Lies isn't much of a surprise ending but the filming is amazing. The film sometimes seems to drag a little but Stephen makes it all worth it, since he's in almost every shot. so sexy. Signing out from Canada his Number 1 fan. Luv ya Stephen;)

Forget this disappointing thing and check out Zebra Lounge
MBunge15 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
If this direct-to-DVD crime thriller had an appropriate level of sex and violence, it might have been almost tolerable. Don't get me wrong. Bound by Lies was never going to be good in any meaningful sense of the word, but it could have been an adequate slice of low brow entertainment. After cramming a car chase, gun fight, explosion and furtive glimpse of breasts into the first 5 minutes of the movie, however, the rest is nothing but a bunch of actors stumbling through an inane plot while mouthing even more inane dialog. There's no nudity, no action, no comedy, no drama. It just slowly deflates like an ugly party balloon.

Max Garrett (Stephen Baldwin) is a detective just back from suspension after a fiasco where he got a suspect killed and a witness disappeared. The movie opens with Max being interrogated about the disaster, interspersed with flashbacks to what happened. Max turns in his gun and badge for a 6 month suspension, then the story jumps forward to Max back on the force and none of the stuff that happened at the beginning has anything to do with the rest of the film. The witness who disappeared does not come back or anything like that.

The reason Bound By Lies begins this way is obviously because someone realized the rest of the movie was duller than the proverbial dishwater and threw in an explosive prologue to try and disguise that for as long as possible. After that reasonably exciting opening, we see Max and his wife Diana (Gladys Jimenez) and get a brief look at her boobs. Then I watched the film for another half hour, waiting for more sex and violence, before it dawned on my that there wasn't going to be any. So, while I'll tip my cap to these filmmakers for tricking me, I'd also like to put my boot in their ass for wasting my time and attention.

Getting back to the narrative, Max is called out to a dead body in an alley and meets his new partner, Lieutenant Eddie Fulton (Charles Malik Whitfield). Eddie thinks it's an open and shut case but Max wants to investigate and winds up interviewing Laura Cross (Kristy Swanson), an artist who lives in a building off the alley and takes bondage photographs. Kristy Swanson does not get naked in this movie. Randi (Natassia Malthe) is Laura's lesbian assistant. Natassia Malthe does not get naked in this movie. I'm emphasizing that to make sure you don't waste your time with this thing.

Anyway, at first Max suspects Laura of being a killer, then it turns out her building's super (Kevin Chamberlin) is the killer and Max has to guard Laura while the super is on the loose. Max discovers an architecturally dubious attic where he can look through peepholes into Laura's loft. An art critic gets killed. Max and Laura fall in love. The super kidnaps Max's wife, leading to a rooftop showdown where the super ties himself to Laura with 50 feet of wire. No, the 50 feet of wire thing doesn't make any sense in the film, either. And to repeat, there's no nudity or violence while any of that is going on.

The performances of Swanson, Stephen Baldwin and the rest of the cast are perfectly acceptable for this sort of thing. The direction of Valerie Landsburg is also perfectly acceptable for this sort of thing. The overpowering problem is that this sort of thing needs to have, and usually does have, a goodly portion of sex and violence. People taking off their clothes. People getting punched or shot or set on fire. Stuff getting blow'd up real nice. And there's none of that in Bound by Lies after the fraudulent first five minutes.

This movie isn't aggressively horrible, but it is without any redeeming value. If you want to see Swanson and Baldwin in a film that succeeds at being an adequate slice of low brow entertainment, go rent Zebra Lounge. Do not spend any of you precious moments on this nonsense.

love the movie and personally know Gladys Jeminez!
missyjblack3 January 2007
This is a great movie - mainly because one of the stars - Gladys Jeminez is a wonderful person and a great friend to me. I have had the pleasure of knowing her the past year and a half and teaching her 5 year old daughter Simone Andrea Kanan piano and voice lessons. She is a fantastic actress as well as being one of the most beautiful people in show business. Steven Baldwin really stands out in this movie - an excellent actor in all of his movies - and his character in this movie stands out among others that he has played. The character played by Kristi Swanson is also played well - good acting - well played - good scrip for this actress. All in all - all three actors blended well together - again - enjoyed my friend Gladys and i encourage all of her fans to watch this movie and enjoy some great acting.
