Mediocre Exploitation Flick
metroscotty1 August 2005
I viewed Chaos at the 2005 Flashback Weekend horror convention in Chicago. The Q&A session with the writer/director David DeFalco, producer Steven Jay Bernheim, and actor Sage Stallone was, strangely enough, before the film. After seeing the movie, I have a hunch as to why. DeFalco and Bernheim were very adamant at pushing this film as the "scariest and most brutal film ever," one of seemingly hundreds per year that reaches for that title. They then proceeded to bash the film they openly admitted influenced Chaos, Wes Craven's horror classic The Last House on the Left, calling it "unrealistic" and "hard to watch," to the point where there was an obvious change in the dynamic of the audience. Because DeFalco, who considers himself a "true horror fan," pushed so hard for people to like this film, I feel obliged to push the other way.

Chaos is by no means an original film. I've seen this movie made countless times with only slight variations on the plot. It does, however, have a few brutal, almost redeeming scenes that do make it worth seeing if you are a true "grindcore" or exploitation movie fan. Both of these, the first in particular, are what the movie will most likely be remembered by. They are both particularly well done, especially with the realistic looking blood and gore effects and the reactions of the female leads. This is, however, my last positive comment on the film.

Each character has been given a set of stereotypes that they must stick to, and none of them transcends their limitations. The girls in Chaos are as mindless as the girls in any other slasher or horror film, which is disappointing after hearing for half an hour about the "realism" of the movie. The police are the most generic characters in the movie, and the Sheriff's racism is extremely played out. Even the parents, an inter-racial couple that you'd think would be the least definable, stick to their stereotypes.

Chaos (the main "bad guy") and company are introduced in a completely unnecessary opening scene that does nothing but establish their characters as low-grade criminals. For a character that is supposed to come across as an example of the ultimate evil (he calls himself the devil at least once), Chaos is shown as a petty thief.

There are a couple inconsistencies in the plot, specifically timing issues. At one point, what seems to be a several minute walk for one group turns into a ten minute car ride for another.

Additionally, the ending feels entirely tacked on. I know that I wasn't the only person in the audience who laughed at the audacity of the director, after placing so much emphasis on realism, to include such a slapstick, somewhat comedic, ending.

In the end, I left the theater bewildered, but for all the wrong reasons. I usually am not so picky about "realism" in horror movies, but after hearing the director make such a point about it, I felt compelled to judge Chaos on it. I really want to believe that DeFalco has what it takes to make a good, original movie, because I saw potential in a few short moments. Unfortunately, after hearing the director speak so openly about this film as not only being his masterpiece, but set to trump The Last House on the Left, a film that has become a staple in any horror fan's collection... well, I'm not too hopeful that we're going to see anything too original from him.

Later this year will see the release of Eli Roth's Hostel, another film billed as the most brutal movie ever captured on film. Maybe a truly original "grindcore" film really is around the corner, but I'm not holding my breath.

Last house On The Left without The Edge and Talent
danthewrestlingmanorigin2 November 2006
Whoa, what can I say here. Well this has got to be the most over-hyped piece of garbage i've seen since Battlefield Earth. First off this film is a complete remake of Last House without the gritty revenge angle. I saw the full cut, so don't think all the negative reviews are for the edited version. Why Roger Ebert bothered with complaining about this film is beyond me, I mean any money this dud made was because of his comments. I really think if he never said anything, this film would have few to no reviews on here, and would have just faded away. The physical and mental torture in this film is disturbing by it's very nature Mr. Ebert, I mean what were you expecting from this storyline, but yet the scenes really lacked any edge, little actual gore is seen, and it certainly isn't a sexy film in any way, so really why see it? I knew exactly how things were going to turn out from the beginning, and not for one moment was I tense, or really interested in the proceedings. Maybe i'm just a jaded gore hound, but this film really has nothing to offer, and just makes you want to go back and watch Last House On The Left again to see how it's done right. A revenge plot would have helped greatly, just to add some unpredictability. All in all whether your looking for extreme gore, suspense, nudity, a good story, or acting, you will be disappointed. The only reason I gave it a two out of ten, is a few of the actors' seemed to have talent, they just had nothing to work with.

Watching this FILTH may save your life, mmkay
Coventry2 November 2016
This movie already annoyed me before it even properly started… The first screen depicts a written message in which is stated that hundreds of girls get abducted and sexually abused every year, and that the producers of this movie wish to illustrate these crimes as graphic and realistic as possible in order to warn parents and potential victims about the dangers of meeting up with strangers. Seriously, shenanigans like these make me furious because A) you honestly don't need to show explicit rape footage and sadist murder in order to pass the message of kids having to be wary of strangers and B) it's 300% hypocritical! If you want to make a raw and shocking exploitation movie, that's perfectly fine, but don't pretend even for one second that cinema like this has a deeper social moral or an educational task to fulfill. Perhaps my rant is slightly exaggerated, but pretentious messages like that at the beginning of a film irritate me enormously! Furthermore, I honestly don't understand where all the commotion with regards to this film comes from. Some people (mainly the haters) call it a rip-off of Wes Craven's "Last House on the Left", whereas others (primarily the fans) refer to it as an unofficial remake of that same exploitation landmark. To me personally it's just another entry in the "rape & revenge" sub-genre of exploitation cinema that is admittedly a lot more similar LHOTL than most titles. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, and then once more in the years 2000-2010, there were dozens of movies cashing in on the success of LHOTL (and, ironically enough, Wes Craven stole the idea of Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring") so why would one more form a problem? The only significant difference that "Chaos" has to offer is that it goes another step further when it comes to depicting misogynous cruelty and repulsive murder. Two young girls, Emily and Angelica, have planned to go to a rave in the woods, much against the will of Angelica's mother. They arrive so early that the rave hasn't even started yet, so they tag along with a guy named Swam who claims that he has ecstasy in his cabin. They end up in the hands of Chaos and his accomplices. Chaos is a dangerously deranged psychopath and rapist, and the poor girls' final hours will be excruciating and miserable. Then, in good old LHOTL tradition, the rapists somehow end up at the parents' house and another violent confrontation ensues. Yes, the violence is sickening. What Chaos does to the white girl's nipple and especially how he kills the black girl is truly disgusting and will make even the most hardened horror viewer squirm in his/her seat. But let's not exaggerate, neither. "Chaos" is not the most depraved film ever made, even though I'm sure that is what writer/director David DeFalco likes to believe. Kevin Gage, who's biggest moment of glory was to appear in Michael Mann's "Heat" in 1995, gives a more than solid performance as the titular sicko Chaos, but in spite of that he will never grow out to become a cult/exploitation icon like Krug Stillo (David Hess) did after "Last House on the Left".

An inferior rip off of a MUCH superior film
alanmora14 September 2005
While I must admit that the scenes of violence in this film are shocking and downright repulsive, it in no way makes up for the fact that, not only does David Defalco Blatantly rip-off Wes Craven's "Last House on the Left" with this HORRIBLE waste of film, but he then adds to this atrocity by openly and blatantly denying it and by actually slamming the original. Forget the fact that this film not only uses the same exact "It's only a movie" ad campaign and most of the scenes are almost frame for frame and word for word rip offs but then you can also add to it the fact that one of it's producers is Marc Sheffler, the man who played Junior in "Last House". AVOID THIS FILM AT ALL COSTS!

By far the worst movie of the year (and possibly ever)
Sheekus25 August 2005
I saw this movie for a free at a screening, I wouldn't see it again if you paid me. This film has the worst acting, the worst dialogue, and the most senseless plot I've ever seen. The premise of the film makes a piece of garbage like House of Wax look like a masterpiece. The movie aims to shock and teach with it's brutal "true to life" story of two girls looking to score "E" at a rave in the woods. The obvious abduction, rape, torture ensues, including a nipple being caught off and fed to it's original owner (at which time at least half the viewers got up and left the theater). Personally though I was not as offended by the grotesque senseless violence as I was by the fact that I felt my intelligence was being insulted by the film maker who claimed the film had some sort of message and redeeming value. It was the quality of a subpar B horror film and an after school special mixed. Without an ounce of reality included it was sick, twisted and pointless all together, without ever making an ounce of sense either. Movies like Cannibal Holocaust and Ichi the Killer contain more blood and guts than this film but don't strain to make it over the hour mark while offending everyone in the audience. Not that they are quality films either, but at least they don't claim to teach me anything! OK, I'm rambling, but I'm upset that free passes were given out for such a horrible film and that a major chain of theaters like Emagine would show this garbage, AVOID THIS FILM AT ALL COSTS!

A pointless, ridiculous waste of time.
CIMC22 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Villains sometimes win in movies, as in real life. People are sometimes killed in movies, as in real life. Sometimes those deaths are incredibly brutal, as in real life. A good film could even portray concentration camps or genocide from the point of view of the perpetrators and still have significant value for giving some insight into the mind of a butcher or the mental state of a semi-automaton carrying out horrific orders. Indeed it's entirely possibly to get inside the mind of a racist, misogynistic casually brutal killer in a way that can illuminate one's own humanity and potential for savageness as in Jim Thompson's classic noir novel The Killer Inside Me. By watching the exploitive trash that is "Chaos", one will gain no insight into anything. "Chaos" will not help one understand inhumanity, war, genocide, serial killing or anything else. A pointless and graphic exercise in misogyny, brutality, racism and sadism "Chaos" is a physically unsettling film, although not in a way that challenges one's world view or biases. As far as that can be considered a success the movie succeeds.

There are two positive aspects of this film although they are not nearly enough to be dubbed "redeeming". The first is that it is only some 76 minutes long. The second is that the various scenes of gore have above average special effects. I cannot think of a good reason to even mention the acting and the dialogue as neither are really relevant to the film however, both are bad. The dialogue is cliché crap recycled from any number of awful films with immoral or morally ambiguous protagonists and the only acting that seems remotely convincing are scenes of the two young women begging for their lives. They too however, turn in awful performances when not screaming. Chaos is played by Kevin Gage who is currently serving 41 months for growing pot. He shouldn't be in jail for that but he should probably serve some time for the bile he serves up as "acting". His character's mannerisms and delivery are a bit like Sam Elliott just not as cool. It should be pointed out that the writer/director of this film has gone on record as stating that this film somewhat like Wes Craven's horror classic The Last House on the Left (itself an uncredited rip-off of an earlier Bergman film) but better. It cannot be compared to that film though as not only is this film lacking in artistic quality, it's not what I would call a horror film. This film should would be better categorized as gore-porn. For posterity's sake I'm going to end this review by describing a scene from the movie hoping that anyone who somehow feels intrigued by this awful mess will be dissuaded. If you are worried about having your filmgoing experience (or your next meal) spoiled then skip the rest of this review. To be clear, I don't recommend that you read what is below or see the movie. There's no good reason to do either.

Emily is running from the killers. Chaos catches her. She is beaten by Sadie but gets hold of Sadie's knife. She stabs Chaos' son in the balls and runs. Chaos strangles his son to death. Chaos catches Emily. Emily is beaten, stripped and bound naked on the forest floor. Chaos rapes her with a knife and uses it to carve a hole from her anus to her vagina. Chaos informs us that he's gotten an erection but can't rape Emily as he's left no appropriate hole. Emily dies.

I watched the movie Chaos alone and regret it deeply.
Tddupb0010 October 2006
I read an article on this man they named Chaos and the story behind him. That's what peaked my interest in seeing this movie. I knew there would be violence,(that's a no-brainer). I just wasn't prepared for anything like this. I actually couldn't move at one point during the film because I was in shock. I felt ashamed and horrified that I was watching this all alone. I've always believed that horror films or any film for that matter doesn't have to be bloody or gruesome to be effective. This director seems to get off on the fact that he made the most brutal film ever. Can you explain this to me? Is he actually proud of this movie? He had the nerve to say it will save lives by watching it. I would love for him to elaborate. All I know, when making a movie, especially one that revolves around such a serious matter, you should use some common sense and decency. I feel sorry for the two young women who decided to take on these rolls. I'd like to know why they chose to exploit themselves. Not a really great way to start your career. If I ever see them in anything again, I'll never get those images out of my head. The movie is for people who love shock value. It's more than disgusting. It's just very very very sad. I pity the director of this film. He doesn't care about the message he's sending. I could see that when I watched all the extra's of the movie to find out what kind of person made this film. It's disturbing!!!!

So very dull, so completely plot less, so pathetically pointless.
Croc-O-Dyle9 December 2006
One day, a wrestler (count the number of the letters in his name and you will still come up with a higher number than his IQ) decided to plagiarize Wes Craven's mediocre debut from the 70s... and in less than a year he vomitted out this "film", a horrifyingly dull attempt at offending and probably "shocking" everyone. A very failed attempt, needless to say. Wrestler, keep this in your "mind" (if you had one): one can only offend and shock when one represents something. A mosquito won't offend me, a worm won't shock me... why should I react any differently to a sad attempt by a pathetic subhuman wrestler? Just ignore him and in time he will die, alone and forgotten, and hopefully with "Chaos" being the only "film" he'll ever have made.

I've seen much worse
Mister-Creeper30 August 2013
But that is still not saying much about this film. I'm not even sure where to begin. I guess I'll start with the "message" at the very beginning. As others have already said, it was a very lame attempt by the filmmakers to justify the content of their little film. Very lame. If you're gonna make a somewhat violent film about rape and murder, then just make the film and leave it at that. There was absolutely no reason to try and pretend that it was made as some sort of message to parents and kids about being safe from murdering rapists. They could have just said, "don't walk through the woods with a stranger while trying to score drugs" and not even bothered with trying to make a film out of it. While it is not the worst movie I have ever seen, or even the most disturbing for that matter, it is not worth watching either. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Some people can't resist the temptation to see what all the "controversy" is about (myself included), but I can assure you it's not as disturbing as some would have you believe and it's just not really worth the time. Pass.

Chickens shouldn't make movies like this
sitenoise2 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Kevin Gage is good as the killer/rapist. He cuts a nipple off one of the girls, makes her eat it, kills her AND THEN rapes her. He shoves a Crocodile Dundee sized knife up the other girl's butt. Nice moves but without any merit. Everyone else in this movie is an embarrassment. The acting is painfully bad.

This is another film that's supposed to be a message ABOUT torture porn instead of simply BEING torture porn; the film begins with a written message saying as much and hopes that by alerting parents and potential victims to the scaries out there, maybe it will save a life.

What a joke. What a wimp of a filmmaker. Who cares if Roger Ebert didn't like your film? I didn't like it either because it totally sucked.

Empty exploitation flick.
jaywolfenstien12 November 2006
Chaos is a film that sets out to show evil, and it succeeds. It shows brutality, torture, death, and rape (in that order) via explicit imagery. Wait, though, because that's not a compliment. The filmmakers have hence patted themselves on the back and continue to congratulate themselves by constantly regurgitating "most brutal movie ever" with every other breath as if repeating it enough makes it true (it's not, and it won't).

Congratulations, you've shown evil … now what are you going to do with it, DeFalco? The answer is nothing. Thus, Chaos ultimately contains nothing beyond its desperate bid to shock its audience. And therein lies the reason not to see the film, and it gives me very little to criticize.

Imagine two grown men, purchasing a new computer, opening the box then declaring, "Mission accomplished. It's installed." What is an obvious step that's not worth the time of most intelligent human beings to mention since it goes without saying, is the stopping point for DeFalco and Bernheim (the director/producer of Chaos). Watch the featurettes on the DVD as these men persist that they've reached a revelation that any idiot figured out way back when Ingmar Bergman made Virgin Springs.

The film is essentially a carbon copy of Wes Craven's Last House on the Left with minor alterations (translation: this exploitation has already been exploited … where are the shocks again?) Girls go out, get involved with the wrong people, find themselves trapped, and suffer at the hands of monsters in human flesh -- and suffer greatly, they do. The two positive changes from Last House being: 1 a relevant title (but did we really need a character named "Chaos"? Oh wait, a Wrestler wrote this … nevermind) and 2 the police are no longer complete incompetent idiots. Bland, racist nobodies, sure.

The meaningless changes? Inconsequential details -- names, exact methods of torture and/or death, number of villains, races of the characters, a pointless new intro to the villains.

Now the negative changes: 1 - the opening crawl laughably out of place on this film, a film that actively seeks to exploit the sufferings of other human beings. Watching, I was reminded of a staple gag to the comedy genre -- you know, the scene where a character is warned in such extreme detail that the audience gets a kick out of said character's silent reaction. This film is that joke, and we are the characters being warned.

Negative change #2 – the film's ridiculous ending is another joke straight out of a comedy. After the Last House chainsaw moment, the father of the victim has Chaos at the business end of his shotgun. In bursts the cops! They raise their guns, issue a warning, and when the father refuses to respond they blow his brains out. After which the wife grabs a gun off one of the cops and shoots the sheriff. The deputy wrestles the gun away. Chaos picks up the father's shotgun and shoots the deputy, and he's in control again. I literally laughed out loud at this scene. Cut out the gore, and this could be a scene for the next Pink Panther film with Steve Martin.

As I said, the film sets out to show evil and, indeed, on the most shallow level evil things happen in the film, complete with effective gore that non-horror fans may have trouble stomaching.

According to DeFalco and Bernheim, that appears to be their entire agenda. To which, I would pose the question, "So, why should I get a picture of evil from you two, when I can go across the horror aisle and get better pictures of evil, more pictures of evil, along with some intelligent observations, commentaries, philosophies, artistic interpretations about said evils for the exact same price?"

Why would I want to buy a t-shirt from you two, when I can get a frickin' car from someone more intelligent?

CHAOS movie misunderstood
blackbird97316 November 2005
After reading many reviews of Chaos that scathingly stated that this movie was offensive trash, I decided I had to see for myself. Many have written about how it is an obvious rip-off of Last House on the Left. First off, yes, it is obvious that it is 'based on' the Last House storyline...a new version, if you will. Last House was a history making, ground breaking exploration of the ugliest parts of humanity, forcing the viewer to witness the brutal abduction, rape and senseless murders of two young girls. Yes, it's disturbing. Yes, it's hard to watch at times. Why does everything have to be so comfortable? Art can be uncomfortable as well. I tend to think it's harder to make someone feel genuinely uncomfortable than it is to make them feel comfortable. Shock value is shock value but it doesn't always have to be frowned upon and the actual piece of art is dismissed as bad because of it. It has the word value in it's phrase for a reason. So, I went to see Chaos feeling a little worried that it would make me feel uncomfortable...too uncomfortable yet also worried that it might not make me feel uncomfortable. The friend that I went with hardly watched the screen and instead opted to turn and look at me in fear and confusion during the most brutal parts. I really can't believe that this would have made her feel any better since the audio was really the most disturbing attack on the senses. Yes, the first drop of bloodlet is a gruesome one but it was really Angelica's horrible screaming and pathetic pleas for mercy that got to me... Chaos is a disturbing and graphically brutal modern day version of Last House with not so great acting and silly dialogue but it also is a fun, bumpy ride into ghastliness. What happens to these two young girls and the way we're forced to witness it is nauseating and upsetting but I give credit to someone who can evoke such a strong emotion from people in a world of done it all, seen it alls and unoriginality. Cheers David DeFalco! Please do it to me again....

The Last Rave On The Left...
EVOL66613 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I'll keep this part brief - anyone who's heard anything about CHAOS knows that it is a blatant LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT rip-off with a slightly different ending. The concepts, plot, and even certain scenes are a direct lift from Craven's classic exploiter. I knew this going into it, so that didn't bother me too much. As other reviewers have noted, I also agree that the cheezy "disclaimer" at the beginning touting this as some sort of educational-film is lame as well. The claims by the distributor that it is "THE MOST BRUTAL FILM EVER MADE" are also false. All that said - CHAOS is decent for what it is.

A couple of girls go to a rave in the woods. Looking for some Ecstasy, they meet up with a young guy (Sly Stallone's son) who takes them back to meet his "friends", who turn out to be his dad and gang-leader Chaos, his greasy pal, and Chaos' pseudo-girlfriend. They get to messin' with the girls, rape 'em and kill 'em (not necessarily in that order...). Car troubles end up bringing the crew to one of the girls' homes, where the parents recognize the group as the people who killed their daughter. A bloody melee ensue between the parents, the assailants, and the police who were called in to investigate the girl's disappearance...

Personally, I found CHAOS to be pretty decent overall. Kevin Gage's performance as Chaos was spot-on and didn't come off as cheezy or too over-acted - he made a pretty believable white-trash psycho. In fact, pretty much all of the performances in the film were at least passable, and the two female victims were pretty damn good. The gore is highly over-rated, as the only really decent scene is the nipple-ectomy - the FX in that scene are top-notch. The rest of the gore is implied, especially the over-rated knife-rape scene. A lot of reviewers have complained about the ending, and though the scenario that takes place is highly implausible - I actually quite liked it. I dig "downer-ending" films, so I thought it worked. I think CHAOS will be of interest to exploit fans, and honestly, you could do a lot worse than checking this one out...7/10

Note: I will say that (as others have accurately noted...) director deFalco comes off like about the biggest dildo in the world in the "morgue" scene in the special-features. He rambles on like a jackass about making the most BRUTAL FILM EVER MADE while in gay looking wrestling garb. I also find it ironic that this film is supposedly a "cautionary tale" - yet the director seems to delight in hanging out at a morgue. I think that had the film-makers been more honest and humble about their intentions and motivations with the film, it wouldn't have gotten quite the backlash that it has. I also found the constant addressing of Roger Ebert for dissing his film to be pathetic as well. I'm pretty sure Ebert watched CHAOS, reviewed it, and forgot all about it. The talk between deFalco and the coroner trying to pass of the plot off CHAOS as an "original" idea was equally pathetic. But - I don't rate films on special-features - so these are just some of my side-thoughts...

To Quote two famous critics: "This is S__t"
sdblosom13 August 2005
This is a remake of Last House on The Left, except it extends into Crap Land. It takes away hope and leaves you with despair. Not even fun despair, this movie is S__t.

Last House on The left was bad enough, there is no point to this film, a remake of crap is crap times 10.

This movie isn't even on rottentomatoes.com. Surprised it is even here. Film critics agree, this movie is the biggest waste of time imaginable. I think this movie has had it.

Even enjoying gore and blood and violence, I'd still say save your money and ignore this pathetic waste of film and time.

Lame, sad, pathetic, and insulting to horror fans
hurricanepictures42613 September 2005
I was not aware of the awfulness of this film when i first saw it. I love seeing horror(or slasher) flicks in theaters where you can sense the fear of the other audience members around you. I was aware this was going to be a remake of Last House on The Left and while i thought that was decent at best, i knew of its cult status and assumed a true fan of the horror genre might remake it and turn it in to something more.

Boy, was i disappointed. This film goes purely for shock and is extremely tasteless. Normally, i don't mind those two aspects in films as long as they can offer a little something else to redeem it. There is nothing redeemable here.

This film is as pleasant as rolling in excrement and then washing it off with four year old urine. I can't see anyone actually enjoying a film this bad. I won't describe anything because I know people will want to see this just because no one will ever enjoy it. Its like driving pass a car wreck, you got to look, its in our nature.

To sum this all up, let me just say, I would never recommend even to someone blind and deaf to see this. And if you really have a desire to see whats so bad about this movie, I implore you, don't waste your money on it. DOwnload it off the internet, steal it off someone's cable, make a friend rent it(When its available), or whatever.

It isn't even worth a dime you might find on the street on your way to the movies. You've been warned.

The worst on Metacritic!
ericstevenson4 November 2016
Well, here it is people. This was ranked as the worst thing ever on the website Metacritic. Well, technically it was tied with a bunch of other movies, but it doesn't really matter. I have no clue what's going on here. I heard it was supposed to be a remake of "Last House On The Left", but then in the credits they say it was an original story. They also say that it was based on a true story, but then the credits say any similarities to real people are coincidence. What even is this? I remember this being one of Roger Ebert's most hated movies of all time and it makes perfect sense. If you're going to criticize a movie for being disgusting, make sure it's one that's horribly acted like this.

Ebert had sort of a feud with the director. Well, they exchanged e-mails trying to defend their position, but they were certainly at each other's throats. Yep, it certainly deserves all of this. Ads say that it was "only a movie" so we shouldn't be offended by it. If it's "only a movie" why even watch it? There is nothing unique about this film in the slightest. We get some bland story stretched over 74 minutes and even then, it seems to go on forever. It is probably the worst horror movie I have seen in my entire life. It is a film that is rotten in every sense of the word. It features a deranged maniac with a bunch of friends. The plot is that two girls are tricked into going into a house of a bunch of evil people who do terrible things to them. That's all. I don't want to even say anything more about the story, if you can even call it.

This movie is unpleasant with horrible characters everywhere. The cops who are supposed to be good are terrible people. One even says he isn't racist even though he then admits that black people are bad. What kind of idiot says that? In the end, everybody kills each other for no reason. Why is this happening? Why is everyone such a horrible person? Even the story is so stupid! The one girl runs away until it's dark and still can't get away from her attackers. We get scenes over and over of these girls screaming and running and that's it. Where am I supposed to be entertained by this?

There is nothing interesting going on at all. It is one of the most insulting films ever made. It has some of the least amount of purpose I've ever seen in a film. It is abysmal with how ugly it is. I just wanted to get away from the screen while this was on. I actually stomached the whole thing. I have no doubt that if my mom saw this, she would think it was the worst movie she ever saw. Even a horrid film like "Caligula" at least has some interesting sets. Nothing is fancy in this. It's just terrible people doing terrible things. There's no music too. It's just a bleak pointless psychotic monstrosity the whole way through. It's hard to find any reason why anyone would like this. Avoid this at all costs. Zero stars

Only one thing more disturbing than this film
ssa220415 September 2008
Only thing I find more disturbing and disgusting than this movie are the people that defend this garbage. This movie was checked out completely by accident, and I surely regret the whole $1 I spent on it. I will even admit I did not finish the movie. Watching plaster dry has more redeeming value.

These movies are made for one audience- psychotic future and current serial killers, rapists, and other vile humans. I wish movies, and the audience members who enjoy this crap would all instantly combust in flames and burn for eternity. There is no single shred of argument that can be made for this vile crap.

I sincerely beg anyone, with so many good films out there, do not watch this movie. If anything, I would encourage people to boycott this movie, and everyone involved in making of this.

Last House on The Left for dummies
Newsense5 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is exactly like Last House On The Left. So much so that as it moves along you would think that you were watching the Wes Craven classic. The only difference is that they changed some parts around. You know a quick revision but not enough to not recognize the movie they are stealing from.

The story is basically two naive girls on their way to a rave mistakenly walk into the clutches of the dumbest and most ugliest people ever captured on film. They are tortured and killed and the three idiots oops I meant criminals go to the house of one of their parents. Sounds familiar? It should.

The acting terribly unconvincing. I never once believed those girls were in danger but I do believe that they might have had a bad case of the runs. The villains were stupid and pathetic and this movie even has a campy subplot involving idiotic cops just like Last House On The Left! Seriously, this movie is really bad and gives low budget cinema a bad name. There are some low budget movies out there that are good and are made with heart but this is not one of them. The director(David DeFalco) is this fiasco should be forced to watch his own rubbish till his eyes bleed. Honestly, Batman and Robin was scarier than this slop. Lets hope that this mangy dog doesn't inspire more hacks to be hacks because low budget cinema doesn't need anymore than it already has. Two thumbs down.

Only because 1 out of 10 isn't an option. (Spoilers)
Jakforster5 November 2010
This is by far the worst film i have ever seen. For many reasons. I know the film was due to be a remake of last house on the left but then at the last minute was changed because of its own originality...... This is ridiculous. The film is pretty much a carbon copy of the film, although it lacks all of the qualities of both the original and the more recent remake. The tagline. This film is not the goriest film, its not the most disturbing film, its not scary. All it does is it shows prolonged attacks on the two girls, breast fondling and so on and hints at one of them being raped. There is no gore!! Now this film is being marketed as the goriest film ever made. i couldn't believe it. The Ending. Honestly, the last shot of the film is ridiculous, it could be a family guy sketch, the dad stabs the villain, the cop shoots the dad, the mum shoots the cop, the villain grabs the gun and shoots the other cop then the mum..... the villain laughs like a cu*t and the feel ends, i feel as though i have wasted an hour and a half and lose faith in small independent horrors. I honestly am at a wits end as to how this film ever got made. The french are miles ahead of us in their production of solid, classy, terrifying and truly disturbing horror movies, with no need for gimmicky taglines. Please watch Inside, Martyrs, La Horde, Seven Days, Frontiers or Switchblade Romance for something a little less Sh*te.

Poor remake of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT
LLAAA48374 April 2007
There is no reason for anybody to see this film if they have seen LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. This film sucks! It starts with careless sensitivity to the characters and degenerates into a brutal and disgusting film with no real reason and no real point. The bulk of the dialog is misogynist or racist, the violence is way overdone, the torture is constant beyond the point of just being sickening and disgusting, and the long sequences where the victims try to get away are done with such a complete lack of a stance toward the value of human life and integrity or attention to detail that I really feel completely sorry for all the actors for having taken part in this film.

To call this a horror film would be a huge lie since the aspect of horror or suspense is lost within it's destructive scenes of two girls just begging to live. The girls' deaths are done in such a sickly, rough, and over-the-top style that the process of them dying is made overly complicated and egotistically unbalanced for the two girl's hope of living. By the time they are in the process of being killed, the thought of them still being alive leads to too many conflicts with the other characters watching as to whether they deserve to stay alive.

It is not an accomplishment for a film to do this. This destroys what "apparently" was the original supposed intention of the film was to be. A cautionary tale. It not only fails in these violet scenes, but also in changing the ending, the notion of revenge being successful or good is turned back on the characters.

This film is nothing but a wannabe shock film that fails because it doesn't have any interest in showing us what is shocking but rather telling us that it is shocking. Not recommended.

Absolutely awful
ThrownMuse8 March 2007
The only thing at all redeeming about this movie is genre vet Kevin Gage's performance as the title character. Otherwise, this exploitation film has little to nothing going for it. It is, indeed, a modern update of "Last House on the Left" (complete with 'raves' and cellular phones), regardless of what the filmmakers have claimed. If you find yourself in the possession of this DVD, skip the movie and watch the special feature where the director (who looks, talks, and acts like a professional wrestler?) is interviewed (shirtless?) in the LA morgue. It's unintentional comedy gold. I could care less what Ebert has to say about this movie, but the filmmakers' rebuttal in the special features, where they claim that the film is a cautionary tale to young women, is laughable.

Deeply unpleasant The Last House on the Left remake.
poolandrews19 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Chaos is set in a small rural Californian town where teenagers Emily (Chantel Degroat) & Angelica (Maya Barovich) decide to go to a local rave in the woods, there they look to score some ecstasy & approach a guy named Swan (Sage Stallone) who tells them he has some back at his cabin. Lured by the prospect of some top quality drugs Emily & Angelica follow Swan to an isolated log cabin where the two teenage girls are kidnapped by Swan's father Chaos (Kevin Gage) & his two associates Frankie (Stephen Wozniak) & Daisy (Kelly K.C. Quann). The four on the run criminals decide to have some fun with the two terrified girls as they torture, abuse, humiliate, rape & murder them. The gangs van breaks down & they head for a nearby house where Emily lived, there her parents Leo (Scott Richards) & Justine (Deborah Lacey) discover what has happened to their daughter & seek revenge...

Originally called & worked on under the title The House in the Middle of Nowhere this bottom of the barrel exploitation flick was written & directed by David DeFalco, this worthless piece of filth was originally intended to be a straight remake of Wes Craven's classic rape revenge exploitation flick The Last House on the Left (1972) but shortly into it's production the producers felt that Chaos was both strong & original enough to stand on it's own. Well despite the fact they were totally wrong I have to give them credit for believing Chaos would be strong enough to not need any association with Craven's well known film but by any other name Chaos is still nothing more than a direct, cheap & deeply unpleasant remake. Chaos actually opens with some scrolling text which claims that the film is in fact a warning for 'victims & parents alike' about the dangers of abduction as if the makers truly felt they were making something with some sort of great social value! The script sticks incredibly closely to The Last House on the Left, the two teenage girls looking for drugs on their way to a party, the initial abduction plays out exactly the same, the gang of a real psycho his slightly daft son a woman & another guy are exactly the same, the rural small town woodland setting, the worried parents who find out the truth & want revenge, the two comedy relief police officers one of whom is a total racist for no apparent reason & the only aspect that Chaos changes from The Last House on the Left is the ending which is absolutely terrible & as has been mentioned already a real laugh out loud moment. Chaos plays exactly like The Last House on the Left until the last few minutes & when it does try to do something different it fails completely in an ending that is so stupid you wonder why they bothered changing it in the first place. Even at only just over 70 odd minutes Chaos feels long, it presents some extremely unpleasant scenes of humiliation & torture that I just can't believe anyone in their right mind would find in the least bit entertaining, the dialogue consists of how many swear words the writers can make the bad guy's say in the same sentence, the characterisation is none existent with absolutely no background given to the four gang members at all.

While watching Chaos I felt that the filmmakers were deliberately trying to go over the top & make a film that would cause controversy, from some really racist remarks & insults (not just from the gang either) to scenes of the two teenage girls being tortured, beaten & killed. The gore isn't that excessive actually, the most graphic scene is when one of the girls has her nipple sliced off, stabbed in the back & then her body is raped. The climax of the film also sees someone get their stomach sliced open with a chainsaw. The film looks cheap & the violence looks cheap too, it's not shocking or disturbing but it is unpleasant to watch for various reasons. The makers didn't really grasp what made The Last House on the Left so good, the rawness of that film is absent here, the feel & the character's & gritty almost documentary style of it is nowhere to be found here in Chaos which is awful in every regard by comparison.

With a supposed budget of about $1,000,000 the makers originally cast David Hess who actually played Krug in The Last House on the Left but when they decided to distance the film as a remake they replaced him. The acting is pretty poor all round to honest, Sage the son of Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone has a small role. I wonder if he has shown Chaos to his dad? Rumour has it most of the cast has since distanced themselves from the finished film & quite frankly I can't blame them.

Chaos was intended as a remake of The Last House on the Left & that's exactly what it is until the silly ending, it's a soulless cheap looking modern remake that tries to shock with sadism but has no subtlety or message or point. Believe all the bad reviews & low scores littered across the internet because Chaos is a worthless & vile film that leaves a very unpleasant aftertaste.

It's only a movie...that I enjoyed tremendously...it's only a movie...that I enjoyed tremendously...it's....
patrick-edwards13 May 2006
Okay. I've read all of the other comments, and I feel like the wrong folks have reviewed this film. Of course, everyone has their own opinion, but I feel that not enough "true" lovers of the gore/slasher film have reviewed here. That said, here's what I thought of Chaos.

I saw--I mean, I "experienced" Chaos at a theatre on the north side of Chicago that was as dilapidated a building as I've ever been in--and that was only the beginning of an extreme adventure, so to speak.

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, I'd come a bit early and had the frightening experience of viewing the credits of the previous showing, and, let me say, the effect was chilling. I couldn't wait for the film to begin.

As I watched the film (because I do not read reviews until AFTER I see a movie: too many surprises un-surprised, as well as an unwelcome bias going in), I was very excited that I'd come to see it. Though the acting was a bit on the stiff and uncultured side, I thought it was enough as I didn't go into the theater expecting any Oscar-winning performances. The gore was everything I'd expected. The one thing I forgot to mention, in terms of reviews, is that I went to the website briefly to get a feel for the movie, so I knew it was going to be violent and expressive in a way that I WOULD have to keep telling myself, "It's only a movie...It's only a movie...." The ending, I thought, was good, but I will agree that it did seem tacked-on; like it belonged in a Pulp Fiction sorta flick or something. But I could live with it.

Overall, I thought the film was realistic. I thought it showed a slice of life that some folks are afraid to see. To know that things like this are happening, is slightly alarming to some folks--unless it's happening to them or someone else they know, which is where I believe all of the criticism is coming from here. I liken it to the crack and heroin scene: When it was affecting the inner cities (mainly blacks), it wasn't so bad; but when it hit the suburbs--shoot, people were all up in arms. "NOW, we have to do something about it!" It's the same with a flick like this: People want to keep their blinders on--makes them feel safer.

There is a wide variety of films made for a wide variety of folks, and Chaos is for a group that enjoys blood and gore. It doesn't make these people even worse than those who only get down with films like Sleepless in Seattle or any of those other lighthearted romance flicks. EVERY movie delivers a slice of life--even those films that YOU can't believe do.

Extremely Brutal and Disturbing
claudio_carvalho3 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Emily (Chantal Degroat) and her friend Angelica (Maya Barovich) go to a rave in the woods, and when they arrive, they meet a stranger called Swan (Sage Stallone) that promises some Exstasy for the girls. They follow him to a cabin of his friends into the forest where they meet the sadistic gang leaded by the psychotic Chaos (Kevin Gage). The girls are abused, tortured and raped in a night of nightmare and murder.

The unpleasant "Chaos" is one of the most brutal and disturbing movies I have ever seen. Michael Haneke's "Funny Games", for example, is better and more elaborated while "Chaos" is raw but absolutely realistic. Every now and then we see sadistic cases, for example, in the news in Rio de Janeiro. This low-budget movie has a non-original story, but the difference is that it is very well acted and believable. The dehumanization of the character Chaos is impressive, the terror of the two girls is amazing but the conclusion is stupid, with the racist officer shooting Emily's father. In my opinion, this polemic movie is underrated in IMDb; there are very few horror movies so realistic like "Chaos". My vote is seven.

Horrible.....Awful....Sad
american_star505 January 2006
My brother came into town from college and took me to the movies. We used to watch Monster Vision when I was younger so he thought we should see Chaos.......BIG mistake. I always listen to Ebert and after seeing this movie, I especially know why I do. In simple terms, the story contains no hope, and for a movie to sit on a high horse claiming realism, to lack hope is lacking a huge part of our reality. Hope is what keeps drives our lives; hoping to do good, hoping to be good, and hoping that everything will be OK. Even with sadistic murderers and brutality there is the smallest morsel of hope - just ask a survivor of the Holocaust.

Moreover, bad acting, extremely bad acting contributed to the failure of this movie. Yea it was about as gruesome as the movie....

Gore doesn't bother me, I've was weened on watching horror movies, but watching men get off on raping and murdering girls, especially when there are women in my family who are rape victims, is not something easily digested. Yes, this world is brutal. Yes, women are raped and maimed. Yes, torture is real. Do we really need a reminder? The only thing that gets us from wallowing in those things, however, is hope. Hope that there will always be something better to take the place of the bad. This movie is nothing but a piece of controversy put together, and the sad thing is, the director used real victims to put money in his pocket, offering no hope as a consolation prize.
