Director Ted Wass has inked a two-year overall deal with Touchstone TV. Under the seven-figure pact, Wass will direct and produce comedy series and pilots for the studio, helming at least 22 episodes and two pilots a year. Wass will continue as the series director of Touchstone TV's sophomore ABC comedy Less Than Perfect, for which he has helmed most of the episodes since its launch. The sitcom is executive produced by Wass' wife, Touchstone TV-based producer Nina Wass. This past development season, Ted Wass directed two comedy pilots for Touchstone, I'm With Her and Married to the Kellys, both of which landed on ABC's fall schedule and recently received full-season orders. Wass previously was the series director on NBC's Caroline in the City and on the last two seasons of ABC's Spin City. He also has helmed episodes for a number of comedies, including My Wife and Kids, Norm and Two Guys and a Girl. Wass turned to directing in the early 1990s following a career as an actor with starring roles on the series Blossom and Soap. He is repped by Broder-Webb-Chervin-Silbermann and attorney Steven Younger.

In one big swoop, ABC has given full-season pickups to six of its seven new series, including all four comedies. The back-nine orders for Hope & Faith, I'm With Her, It's All Relative and Married to the Kellys mark the second consecutive season in which ABC has picked up all of its freshman comedies. "It's a nice day here," ABC entertainment president Susan Lyne said. "Our comedy department has done just an amazing job building a truly formidable comedy schedule." The network's batting average also has improved on the drama side. ABC has picked up two of its three series --10-8 and Threat Matrix -- versus the quick demise of all three freshman drama series in fall 2002. The remaining new drama, Karen Sisco, has received an order for four additional scripts, and talks are under way between the networks and the show's producer, Universal Network TV, for a potential episode pickup.

In a vote of confidence for its new comedies, ABC has ordered four additional scripts each from Hope & Faith, I'm With Her, It's All Relative and Married to the Kellys. Meanwhile, after a promising ratings spike Tuesday, NBC has ordered five additional scripts from freshman comedies Whoopi and Happy Family. CBS has ordered six additional scripts from new drama Joan of Arcadia, and Fox has ordered three additional scripts from its upcoming midseason drama series Still Life. The script orders bode well for the freshman shows as they often are a precursor to additional episode pickups. If ABC gives back-nine orders to Hope & Faith, I'm With Her, It's All Relative and Married to the Kellys, it would mark the second year in a row that ABC has picked up all its new comedies for a full season.

CBS stayed hot with its newly configured drama slate on the second Friday of the fall season, even as most of the Big Three networks' new offerings on the night suffered week-to-week ratings declines from the previous week's season premieres. A baseball overrun boosted Fox to the nightly win on Saturday, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. It was slow going Saturday at 10 p.m. for the return of ABC's revamped Dick Wolf drama L.A. Dragnet, which was forced to compete with an NBC rerun of Wolf's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. On Friday, CBS' buzzworthy new 8 p.m. drama Joan of Arcadia again won its time slot in viewers and adults 18-49 with an average 12 million viewers and 3.0 rating/11 share. Joan was down from last week's premiere (13.2 million viewers, 3.7/11), as was NBC's Miss Match (6.2 million, 2.0/7). Miss Match ranked third in adults 18-49 in the time slot behind Joan and ABC's comedies George Lopez (7.8 million, 2.7/10) and the 8:30 p.m. bow of Married to the Kellys (8.2 million, 2.9/10), which built slightly on its lead-in.
