even as it low on every grade it is watchable
trashgang6 June 2012
This is one of those Japanese flicks or even franchise that is highly sought. The reason is that it was based on a manga. The story of the rapeman is a bit sleazy.

A teacher and his uncle do run a business where you can use the services to punish someone by raping. The teacher (Hiroyuki Okita) is a normal guy at day but becomes a nasty one who go out to rape girls for punishment. But don't think that it ever becomes gory or explicit. It do has some nudity in it but not to mention. No drip of blood is seen in this 74 minute flick. By clocking in at that time it's over before you know it. It's watchable because the acting isn't typical exaggerated as in so many flicks coming from Japan or Hong Kong.

The version I had was an official VHS release with English subs, a version that doesn't pop up on a usual base. The other parts (until 4) are even harder to get on an official release (on the pink pineapple label). Even as it is low on brutality or blood and nudity it is watchable because they combined a small piece of comedy in it. The sleazy pieces do add something too. Low for a 'pinku' but recommendable.

The franchise did got a spin-off after 1996, they made Ôedo Reipuman (1996). Evene harder to get. But both franchises came to an abrupt end due the death of Hiroyuki Okita in 1999. He committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence.

Definitely not for the PC crowd, but a lot of fun
lazarillo29 September 2014
This movie (the first a series) is basically a low-budget, but actually pretty entertaining superhero spoof about a mild-mannered Japanese schoolteacher who teams up with his uncle to make money AND right the wrongs in society. The reason this will never get an American reboot though is the WAY in which he rights the wrongs in society--by handcuffing and raping evil women! The character is the serial rapist version of "Dexter" in that he only rapes women who "deserve it" ("righting wrongs through penetration"). But (as unbelievable as it is) people actually take "Dexter" much more seriously. The women in this movie are not just evil, they're cartoonish (if they had mustaches they'd be twirling them). Accusing a movie like this of "misogyny" is like accusing "Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner" cartoons of animal cruelty. Of course, this is pretty adult. The rape scenes are eroticized and the sexy, evil women (quite unrealistically, of course) end up enjoying the experience (which begs the question of exactly how much they're REALLY being "punished" here).

It is this latter aspect that would no doubt really wad the panties of the American "PC" crowd because it contradicts the bizarre idea that rapists, by and large, are poor confused souls who have been fooled by the media into thinking women "want" to be raped. But why give the REAL-LIFE scumbags that much credit? Rapists are mostly either sociopaths--who could care less about their victims (like most criminals)--or they are actual sexual sadists, who GET OFF on their victims suffering and would be very disappointed if their victims "enjoyed it". People have finally figured out the vast difference between consensual BDSM and sexual sadism. Well, the rape scenes in this movie are at heart consensual rape fantasy (which both women and non-rapist men at times enjoy) and simply are not going to have much appeal to genuine rapists.

It might be slightly more "offensive" that in his mild-mannered schoolteacher life his female students are all under-dressed, sex-obsessed "roritas" who give their hapless teacher a pair of their panties and tell him it's a handkerchief or tease him about becoming phone-sex operators (He gets flustered, but always remains very professional, and since they're mischievous rather than evil, they never encounter his alter ego). But maybe someday when people can separate harmless rape fantasies from actual rape, they'll also be able to separate harmless "schoolgirl fantasies" (these are actually pretty mature-looking "schoolgirls" and it wouldn't have been totally out-of-line for Rape Man to at least give them a good spanking)from actual pedophilia. In the meantime though the PC crowd should definitely avoid this, but it's a pretty fun movie for everyone else.

No!

Warning: Spoilers
Haven't watched this movie, but I am aware of the premise and have read the other reviews. If the supposed 'hero' truly believed that what he was doing made the world a better place he would not only be raping women but men as well like a character from the sci-fi British dram 'Misfits' does.

Well written genre hybrid
fertilecelluloid29 December 2003
"Rapeman 1" is a well written and sweet genre hybrid that mainstreams the original manga's more controversial elements and delivers a quality piece of entertainment.

Rapeman and his uncle run Rapeman Services, a company catering to wronged, vengeance-seeking spouses and spurned lovers.

In this outing, Rapeman and Uncle become embroiled in a political party's attempt to disgrace an opponent.

Rapeman, a school teacher by day, rapist by night, is also a detective and has a strong sense of justice.

"Righting wrongs through penetration" is the company motto and many wrongs are righted here.

Shot on video and given the "film look" treatment, this fascinating genre hybrid is skilfully directed and nicely scored.

The actor portraying Rapeman ended his own life recently and, thus, ended this terrific series.

Righting Wrongs Through Penetration...
EVOL6669 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Only in Japan would this type of production be made - and thank God for it. RAPEMAN is a strangely fun and "charming" super-hero/crime-film series where the hero of the films "rights wrongs through penetration" by offering his services to disgruntled individuals who have a good enough reason. The "proceeds" from Rapeman Services also serves a good cause, and goes to the orphanage that Keisuke (Rapeman's alter-ego) grew up in...

In this first installment of the series - we are introduced to Keisuke: mild mannered school-teacher by day - avenging angel of rape by night - and his goofy Uncle, who together run Rapeman Services. Their "services" are called-upon by a nightclub owner who tells a sob story about having her boyfriend, a current political candidate, stolen by his secretary, and asks Rapeman to "take care of her" as an act of revenge. This is done per the nightclub owner's request - but we soon find that the story was just a cover to cause a bigger scandal that involves rival a seedy rival politician and the Yakuza...

This film, as weird as it sounds has a strange charm about it that overrules the potentially sleazy content. The film feels much more like a main-stream TV crime series, despite the rape-content. The character of Keisuke/Rapeman is kinda like a cross between Ogami Itto (from the BABYCART series), Hanzo The Razor, and Magnum P.I., and the production-value and acting of the film are very TV-show-like as well. This is the first of the films that I've seen, but have part 2 laying around which I'm anxious to get to as well. Hard-core sleaze fans will probably be disappointed as RAPEMAN isn't nearly as "rough" as some of the older pinku material, but there is some nudity - and there's something that's hard to nail-down that makes this one a big winner in my book. I think the combination of light comedy and strange concept works...8.5/10

Very entertaining and amusing film.

"Rapeman" is the first installment of hugely popular and politically incorrect series about a quiet and mild-mannered teacher who becomes secretly a leather-clad and masked superhero called Rapeman. You can hire him,if you want to get the revenge against someone through rape. This time a bar hostess hires Rapeman to rape the new wife of her former boyfriend and noted politician. The plot of "Rapeman" may sound offensive for some viewers, however the film is not as violent and sleazy as many other notable pinku flicks. In fact it's surprisingly funny and humorous. The rape scenes are very tame and there is only a little bit of nudity,so the film can be enjoyed even by the viewers who dislike pinku genre.A perfect flick to cheer somebody up!

Keep It Strong
ElijahCSkuggs3 November 2006
Most people find the subject of rape a very strong, criminal and evil part of life. And they have every right to believe that way. Then there are other people who think rape can be used as a means of justice, a way to avenge rights and honor. Well, before this movie I always thought Rape was a weird touchy subject. Obviously there's some whacked out nut cases out there, hurting people and families for their own sick pleasures and some of these sickos will actually commit murder. But I also believed that the act of rape can be a desirous outcome for certain people. Well, the latter is tackled somewhat in a movie I'll most likely never forget.

The story is about a soft spoken, high school teacher who takes vengeance into his own hands at night by becoming Rape Man. He and his Uncle are partners in Rape Service. Where they offer rape as a means of Justice. They take their earned money through Rape Service and donate all of it to an orphanage which our hero grew up in. Their motto is "Righting Wrongs Through Penetration". One of the funniest and "coolest" mottos I've ever heard. Well, Uncle and Rapeman have become unwillingly involved in a political/mafia scandal. People are getting hurt, and that is not right. Rapeman stands for justice, honor and peace. He will not stop until the bad guys get what's coming to them! The movie is believe it or not, warmhearted. It's full of humor, and has some nice sex scenes...they are actually rape scenes but they don't play out like rape. Which for me makes the movie that much better. I wouldn't be down with this if the rape scenes were reminiscent of Irreversible. The movie has charm, a very good cast, some great music and well-written story! It take an incredibly serious subject and makes it seem OK....for 75 minutes anyways. It's definitely one of the most enjoyable movies I've seen in a while. And I'm definitely looking forward to the sequels. Yup, that's right! 9 outta 10 for the amazing Rapeman.
