In 1973, a young Hayao Miyazaki moved to Nippon Animation where he would work as an animator on such projects as “World Masterpiece Theater.” Five years later, in 1978,he got a chance to direct a small TV animation known as “Future Boy Conan.” This was the beginning of Miyazaki as we know him today. While the show was received poorly, with time it grew in popularity, both in Japan and abroad. And now, some forty years after its release, more are being drawn to the series, garnering “Future Boy Conan” something of a cult following.
Future Boy Conan is screening at Nippon Connection
The story of “Future Boy Conan” is set in a post-apocalyptic future, with the titular Conan living peacefully on an island oasis with his adoptive grandfather, ignorant of any life beyond their private community. One day, Conan returns from a shark hunt, only to find a stranger, a...

For lovers of classic anime series the past weeks have seen some great announcements, ranging from Hayao Miyazaki's seventies' title Future Boy Conan getting a release in 2022, to Nozomi Entertainment creating a Kickstarter campaign for an English-friendly high definition release of the entire Dirty Pair franchise. That's right, a boxset with the original 1985 26-episode series, the OVAs, the movies, and even the 1990's Dirty Pair Flash series. The emphasis is on the original series though, as that one has never been released with an English dub, something this campaign intends to fix. Not into dubs? No worries, the set will also contain the original Japanese tracks with subtitles for all contents. Based on a series of illustrated novels by Takachiho Haruka, the 1985...

Netflix and Sony’s “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” isn’t the only animated Oscar contender for next year with a wild 2D aesthetic. “Luca” (streaming on Disney+ June 18) also sports a 2D look that’s unique for Pixar. Director Enrico Casarosa — who first experimented with watercolors and pastels to make graphic shapes and waves on his Oscar-nominated short, “La Luna” — achieves a more daring, painterly approach for his feature debut.
It’s about a bromance between two sea monsters, the 13-year-old protagonist of the title (voiced by “Wonder” star Jacob Tremblay) and his new friend, Alberto (voiced by “Shazam’s” Jack Dylan Grazer), who can turn human above the sea on the Italian Riviera. They share an enchanting summer riding Vespa scooters, eating pasta and Gelato, and diving off the rugged cliffs into the turquoise water, while soaking up the beauty of the pastel seaside town. But at the same time,...

Pixar dropped the teaser trailer for “Luca,” the directorial feature debut of Enrico Casarosa (the Oscar-nominated “La Luna” short). It’s about an unforgettable summer on the Italian Riviera with the titular 13-year-old protagonist (voiced by “Wonder” star Jacob Tremblay) and his best friend, Alberto (voiced by “Shazam’s” Jack Dylan Grazer) — a sea monster. When Alberto becomes human on land, they’re able to share scooter rides, swimming, pasta, and Gelato.
Andrea Warren produces and the voice cast also includes Maya Rudolph; Emma Berman; Marco Barricelli; and Jim Gaffigan.
“Luca” continues Casarosa’s semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age saga that began with “La Luna” (also set in his seaside town before setting off on a lunar adventure). Like the short, “Luca” contains a colorful, handmade aesthetic. “I thought back to very important relationships in my life,” Casarosa told IndieWire. “‘La Luna’ was all about growing up with my dad and my grandfather,...

The films of legendary anime creator Miyazaki Hayao get plenty of attention, and rightly so. The man is one of the few true cinema geniuses the world has, and even better: he's still alive and creating a new film. Rejoice! That very fame makes it a bit surprising that so little of his television work is easily available. I'd pay good money for a Blu-ray of the episodes of Lupin III he made with his regular partner-in-crime, the late Takahata Isao. I'd pay good money And rob some people to own an English-friendly Blu-ray of the Future Boy Conan series. One of Miyazaki's works that Did manage to get released in the West was his 1984 series Sherlock Hound, a take on Arthur Conan Doyle's...
