Cousin Steve from the West finds his way to the East. He stays with his relatives and mistakes their innocent attentions for designs upon his peace of mind, not understanding the Eastern veneer of civilization. He gets into trouble with the butler; he sees a cabman abusing a horse and unwisely interferes; he rescues a girl in distress; and he just keeps doing things that the average Easterner regards as unnecessary. There is a family conspiracy to get him to marry his cousin, who loves another; Steve has also conceived other ideas. The family cook is a comfortable, good-natured girl with whom Steve in his blunt, homely way strikes up a flirtation, then a friendship. She makes excellent pies, and Steve likes pies and their maker so much that he decides to marry her. In his good-heartedness he makes a handsome present to the man in love with his cousin, whom Steve critically regards as a clotheshorse. This story proves that, after all. the heart is the predisposing factor in marriage, even among men of Cousin Steve's primitive type, who are supposed to fall for more externals.
