Every man in this movie was portrayed as an overbearing chauvinistic selfish condescending buffoon. The father was horrible and her teacher probably gave the worst acting performance in history. Women were portrayed not much better to be honest. All the characters were written beyond the point of credibility. Dumb, annoying daydream sequences detracted from the overall flow of the narrative. There was great music back then but none of it made it onto the soundtrack for whatever reason. Of course Diane was cute and managed to captivate most scenes. The scenes with her teaching were tender. Gere's character, while not likable, came across as a believable psychopath. She made her choices and suffered the worst possible consequences. Could of been so much better. The book must have been horrendous!
