Ruby (1977)

Ruby, no diamond in the rough

Piper Laurie's ode to Carrie, for most part, disappointing, if only for the story and setting, and decent acting, again showing us why Piper Laurie's one of the greatest film actresses, and she creeps it up here. We have a much younger Uncle Leo, pre Seinfeld face. Ruby is a disjointed horror with good intentions, and has a good amount of gore, but small time, tame in most bloody images.. The story doesn't fully explain, if any on how Ruby developed telekinesis. Laurie runs this sleazy drive in, with one lass frequents, nearly every night with a different lover. She develops a connection with her estranged, troubled daughter (Exorcist alert) and herself is damaged as watching her mobster 'hand in the cookie jar' mobster boyfriend gunned down by a score of mafia men. The film doesn't rise much above dull, and there seems to be cheap photography used here. The title song is rather surpassing, at the end, the film's top attribute, the other one, is that it is the end. Not without a look though. The most memorable image to me, about this film, was those power coming down in the violent telekinesis offering.
