Margot Robbie at an event for The Oscars (2016)

    #1 Margot Robbie

Third on this list last year, Margot Robbie makes the leap to the top as IMDb's Top Star of 2016. It was a year in which the Australian actress displayed her versatility in a trio of notable big-screen performances. She played BBC correspondent Tanya Vanderpoel in the war comedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) and followed that with a turn as Jane Porter in The Legend of Tarzan (2016). However, Robbie's most notable work in 2016 was as psychiatrist-gone-bad Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad (2016). It's a memorable, visually striking role that not only inspired a future standalone film (Gotham City Sirens (????)) but too-many-to-count lookalike costumes at comic book conventions and Halloween parties.

Emilia Clarke at an event for The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards (2016)

    #2 Emilia Clarke

"Game of Thrones (2011)" favorite Emilia Clarke returns to the No. 2 spot on IMDb's Top 10 Stars list, doubtless lifted by the durable popularity of the hit HBO fantasy drama. In Season 6, her character Daenerys found new strength in addition to taking destiny into her own hands with the help of some fire. In June, Clarke proved that she could headline a romantic movie, playing a lead character who finds some inner strength of her own in Me Before You (2016) alongside Sam Claflin.

Millie Bobby Brown at an event for The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards (2016)

    #3 Millie Bobby Brown

In a year of remakes, reboots, and nostalgia-tinged titles, no television series seemed to captivate audiences quite like "Stranger Things (2016)," whose '80s-inspired conspiracies, disappearing characters, and cultural references kept sparking online discussions even long after the show debuted in July. Central to these was Eleven, the mysterious psychokinetically gifted girl, and the arresting young actress who played her, Millie Bobby Brown. Her performance resonated widely with both young and old viewers, propelling her to the top of IMDb's Top 10 Breakout Stars of 2016. Her popularity has allowed her to reach even more audiences in popular music: In November, she starred in a music video for Sigma's single "Find Me."

    Tom Hardy

    #4 Tom Hardy

Don't worry, Tom Hardy fans: IMDb's top star of 2015 didn't fall too far from the top in the 2016 list. Buoyed by his haunting performance in The Revenant (2015), where he played hard-to-love but impossible-to-ignore John Fitzgerald (complete with an unforgettably thick accent), Hardy kept himself at the forefront of awards season water-cooler talk. After movie awards season was complete, the British actor kept TV fans buzzing as Alfie Solomons in Season 5 of cult favorite "Peaky Blinders (2013)." In 2017, he's set to star in period miniseries "Taboo (2017)," which he created in collaboration with his father Chips Hardy. Tom plays rogue adventurer and would-be shipping magnate James Keziah Delaney.

    Morena Baccarin

    #5 Morena Baccarin

Brazilian native Baccarin catapulted herself onto IMDb's Top 10 list for 2016 by virtue of strong showings with both movie and TV fans. She kicked off 2016 as a scene-stealing centerpiece in the year's bawdiest comic book film, Deadpool (2016), playing the title character's scrappy and forthright love interest. And off the big screen, she continued to portray series regular Dr. Leslie Tompkins on FOX's "Gotham (2014)". The show was a source of both professional and personal success this past year: She and "Gotham" co-star Ben McKenzie welcomed their first child in March.

Gal Gadot at an event for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

    #6 Gal Gadot

The title of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) may have focused on two male antagonists, but it was Gal Gadot's rendition of Wonder Woman that kept comic book fans bustling for months. After the movie's March release, Warner Bros. kept momentum rolling through the summer by releasing two blockbuster trailers during San Diego Comic-Con: One for the much anticipated Justice League (2017) and another for the equally talked-about Wonder Woman (2017) standalone, also to be released in the coming year. In both, Gadot was front and center, reprising her role as Diana Prince. Successful as 2016 was for Gadot with respect to DC Comics diehards, she rounded out her year with turns in the action comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses (2016), crime drama Triple 9 (2016), and Criminal (2016).

Alicia Vikander at an event for The Oscars (2016)

    #7 Alicia Vikander

After mesmerizing fans and critics with her turn as Ava in 2015's Ex Machina (2014), the versatile Swedish actress began the year as an awards season darling, racking up a slew of nominations and big wins for her performance as painter Gerda Wegener in The Danish Girl (2015). The role, which helps to illuminate the emotional complexities and experiences embedded within gender reassignment surgery, ultimately earned Vikander a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Later in 2016, she starred opposite Matt Damon in the latest Jason Bourne (2016) flick and with real-life love interest Michael Fassbender in The Light Between Oceans (2016). Also noteworthy in 2016: Her being named as the newest Lara Croft in Tomb Raider (2018), set to debut in 2018.

    Daisy Ridley

    #8 Daisy Ridley

There's nothing like a Star Wars film to launch your career into other-worldly status. Thanks to the global box-office success of Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) and the cultural phenomenon that was reignited by it, Daisy Ridley became a certifiable megastar and the face of a suddenly more diverse and modern chapter of a beloved film franchise. In her lead character Rey, sci-fi fans found a female protagonist for the next generation: a young woman who was independent, empathic, adaptable, and unafraid to mix it up with the worst of the Dark Side. Expect similarly big things from Ridley in 2017: She landed a role in the star-studded Murder on the Orient Express (2017) and, of course, returns for Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017), set to hit theaters in December.

    Haley Bennett

    #9 Haley Bennett

2016 was a breakout year for this twentysomething Florida native, who nabbed consequential roles in three of the year's most critically mixed releases. Bennett played scientist Estelle in first-person shooter flick Hardcore Henry (2015), justice-minded Emma Cullen in The Magnificent Seven (2016), and the enigmatic Megan Hipwell in The Girl on the Train (2016). The end of 2016 proved just as fruitful: She portrays young actress Mamie Murphy in Rules Don't Apply (2016) and Ellie Briess in A Kind of Murder (2016).

Leonardo DiCaprio at an event for The Oscars (2016)

    #10 Leonardo DiCaprio

Death, taxes, and Leo's popularity among IMDb users: These are things on which you can rely. DiCaprio enjoyed a career year in 2016, where the popular actor finally snagged a Best Actor Oscar for his downright gritty work in The Revenant (2015). It was a performance that shocked and riveted viewers and critics. It also tested Leo's personal limits: In one scene the famous environmentalist and vegetarian ate an actual raw bison liver. DiCaprio capped 2016 with Before the Flood (2016), a documentary he produced about climate change.
