The Wiz has returned in a Broadway revival starring Wayne Brady, Deborah Cox, and others.
The cast includes Emmy-winner Brady in the show’s titular role and Grammy-winning Cox as Glinda the Good Witch.
They’ve been appearing on various morning programs and talk shows to promote their big event by discussing their roles, what this show represents, and more.
The co-stars recently appeared on CBS Mornings and talked to Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil, and Vladimir Duthiers.
While some may have found the interview entertaining and insightful, several critics called Gayle out for her involvement in the segment.
In particular, one question Gayle asked drew criticism from a viewer, while another brought up something else that bothered them about the interview.

The Princess of Wales Kate Middleton has been a subject of discussions since undergoing a planned abdominal surgery in January this year. The secrecy surrounding the details of the surgery and rumors about her health have sparked controversy, particularly due to her absence from the public eye for nearly two months.
In an effort to address the speculation and calm public concerns, Kensington Palace released a photograph of the beloved Princess with her children, extending Mother’s Day wishes to all. However, this move seems to have backfired, as it only fueled further speculations, prompting CBS Mornings to directly reach out to Buckingham Palace to get to the root of the issues.

Jon Stewart is opening up about his highly anticipated return as host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, nearly nine years after leaving the nightly gig.
Appearing on Monday’s CBS Mornings before returning as Daily Show host on Mondays through the 2024 election, Stewart said it was indeed the political environment that brought him back, while also sharing that the move was influenced by his departure from Apple TV+ over creative differences.
“I very much wanted to have some place to unload thoughts as we get into this election season,” Stewart said, then referring to The Problem With Jon Stewart not moving forward with a third season on the streamer. “I thought I was going to do it over at — they call it Apple TV+. A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.
Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.
As the day goes on, network correspondents are fanning out across the state at precincts to talk to actual voters, after months in which the first-in-the-nation primary was judged and assessed by polls. Commentary and analysis is focusing on whether
Haley and her top surrogate, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, blitzed the airwaves on Monday, while Trump held a final rally in Laconia, Nh, where he predicted that Haley would be out of the race after tonight. He was interrupted by climate protesters, who have been a frequent presence at events in recent days.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

Michael J. Fox, who’s lived with Parkinson’s disease for more than 30 years, told CBS News that he’s always dealing with depression. But, he noted, he still finds ways to stay positive.
The “Back to the Future” and “Family Ties” actor was asked by “CBS Mornings” cohost Nate Burleson if he ever has moments where he battles depression or uncertainty.
“Yesterday at 3:57 in the afternoon,” Fox, 62, darkly quipped. “I mean, always.”
Parkinson’s is a progressive brain disorder that affects both movement and speech. Fox was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991 at 29 years old. There is no cure.
“The positivity is really sincere. I really feel it, and it’s genuine” Fox said. “But it’s hard-fought, and it’s hard won, I should say. This fear, we can find ways to just give ourselves a break, give ourselves credit for getting through life, on life’s terms.

News correspondents are trained to keep their emotions in check, but sometimes a story comes along that makes such a feat all but impossible.
Anderson Cooper, Richard Engel, Holly Wiliams, Trey Yingst, Matt Gutman and Clarissa Ward have been seen on camera in recent days trying to report on a horrific event that is emotionally draining: the invasion of Israel by Hamas militants, replete with violence, hostage-taking and explosive force.

Celebrities like Natalie Portman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gal Gadot, Amy Schumer and Guy Oseary took to social media to share their sympathies for Israel after the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched deadly land and air strikes on the country early Saturday morning.
At least 1,400 people in Israel and Palestine are dead, with thousands wounded on both sides, the Associated Press reported as of Monday.
Gadot, who has spoken out in support of Israel in the past, posted a screenshot to her Instagram account on Saturday, of a news story that stated that Israeli soldiers and civilians had been taken hostage by militants. In the caption, she wrote that “at least 250 Israeli have been murdered and dozens of women children and elders held as hostages in Gaza, by Palestinian military group Hamas.”
She continued, “Starting early morning more than 3,000 rockets were fire. Hamas is holding hostages, controlling bases and settlements in Israel.

Sean Penn has spoken about how he originally intended for his Ukraine documentary Superpower, which he co-directed with Aaron Kaufman, to be a “lighthearted” portrait of the country’s actor-turned-president Volodymyr Zelensky before the Russian invasion of its European neighbor in early 2022 caused him to pivot to making a war movie.
In an appearance on CBS Mornings on Wednesday, Penn explained how that shift took place and the role that delays, including the Covid-19 pandemic, played in shaping the scope of the film.
Penn noted he initially met Zelensky over Zoom, “long before the drums were beating on the Russian invasion,” when the Ukraine president was in the news for his role in the “controversial phone call,” as Penn put it, that ultimately resulted in then-President Donald Trump’s first impeachment.

Sitting with “CBS Mornings” on Wednesday, Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth refused to clarify his company’s stance on LGBTQ rights — in the last week of Pride month, no less.
“We support politicians that support our business,” he said, answering to the heightened scrutiny and cratering sales Anheuser-Busch and Bud Light have faced in the months since a social media partnership with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney led to a widespread, far-right boycott.
After Whitworth noted that Anheuser-Busch has supported the LGBTQ community since 1998, CBS News’ Vladimir Duthiers noted apparent contradictions seen in the company’s behavior. While Anheuser-Busch released special rainbow bottles in 2019 in honor of Pride, for instance, the company also has a history of donating to politicians who have supported anti-lgbtq legislation.

Tom Hanks addressed the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike that began a week ago on “CBS Mornings” with Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson.
“The entire industry is at a crossroads and everybody knows it. The financial motor has to be completely redefined,” he said. “And there is some degree of pie here that is going to have to be equitably distributed by the people who are responsible for the content, not the folks who make the deals for the content, the folks who actually make it.”
Hanks made an appearance to discuss his new book “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece” which tells the fictional story of a set of comic books adapted into a movie, detailing the lives of the people in front of and behind the camera.

Some people gird for battle by putting on armor. Tony Dokoupil just bought a second pair of dress shoes.
“I’ve had the same pair of brown, beat-up, nasty dress shoes — my good shoes. I’ve been wearing them for several years now,” the “CBS Mornings” co-anchor confides in a recent interview.
Dokoupil, 41 years old, has reason to refresh his wardrobe. He and CBS News have renewed his contract, locking in the team behind the network’s morning news program– Gayle King and Nate Burleson also co-anchor the show, while Vladimir Duthiers is a daily contributor — for the next few years. It’s a sign that CBS and parent company Paramount Global are confident in the show, which, even though it remains in third place behind ABC’s “Good Morning America” and NBC’s “Today,” has been making viewership gains in important categories as the current battle for A.M.

In the initial hours after the horrific Texas school massacre, in which 18 children and one adult was killed, CNN’s Jake Tapper noted that politicians’ expressions of thoughts and prayers “has sadly become a cliche at this point.”
But even calling it a cliche seems like a cliche, because the mass shootings, and school massacres in particular, keep happening.
Ed Lavandera, covering the shooting for CNN, was able to give some insight to a reunification center that had been set up for parents at Ross Elementary, as he recalled the same set up for Sandy Hook Elementary. “You could hear the yelling and screaming of the parents who were there,” he said.
Later in the evening, one local reporter at the scene of the Texas shootings, Leigh Waldman of Ksat-tv in San Antonio, wrote on Twitter, “We just heard screams inside the civic center. Yet another family hearing the worst news possible.

The venue was the same, but Paramount Global’s inaugural upfront presentation at Carnegie Hall took a very different approach compared to the CBS presentations of old.
Jo Ann Ross, longtime CBS ad sales chief, still opened the show without pomp and circumstance, introducing an event that was designed to run an hour playing off the them of CBS’ signature newsmagazine “60 Minutes.” In reality, it ran about an hour and 20 minutes.
In what has become a theme of the upfronts this year, media buyers spent much of the hour watching pre-taped pieces, sprinkled with in-person pitches from talent and executives. Rather than focusing on new series clips, it was “60 Minutes” anchors producing and hosting what were in essence branded custom content videos for their corporate parent.
(“The Late Late Show” host James Corden came out at 5:09 p.m. Et noting how, well, the “60 Minutes” idea didn’t quite work as planned.

Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down CNN+ as of April 30, marking one of the company’s first significant maneuvers since completing the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery less than two weeks ago.
The decision puts an abrupt end to an ambitious and aggressive venture that people familiar with the matter say rankled David Zaslav, the new CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, from the start. Zaslav was annoyed by the decision of Jason Kilar, the former CEO of WarnerMedia when it was owned by AT&T, to launch CNN+ just weeks before Discovery was set to take over operations. But he was unable to communicate with WarnerMedia management, owing to legal boundaries surrounding the merger process.
“This decision is in line with Wbd’s broader direct-to-consumer strategy,” said Chris Licht, the incoming CEO of CNN, in a statement. “In a complex streaming market, consumers want simplicity and an all-in service, which provides...

Tony Dokoupil has recently traveled to Medyka in Poland, Miami and Minneapolis, too. Over the course of a career in journalism, he has visited all 50 states in the U.S. Even so, he will be stepping onto new terrain when he launches a new series on Thursday on “CBS Mornings.”
As part of “Mornings in the Metaverse,” set to air weekly, Dokoupil will take viewers of the CBS News program into the virtual-reality realm that experts are predicting will eat up more of our overall bandwidth in months and years to come. In real life, the anchor might use a microphone to interview passers-by, all with a camera crew in town. When he used a Meta headset to visit a virtual-reality venue recently, Dokoupil brought producers with him, who used their line-of-sight with their own headsets as ersatz cameras to capture the conversations he had with other users.

Gayle King and Vlad Duthiers tested positive for Covid, forcing CBS Mornings to take a series of steps as a precaution.
At 7:30 Am, co-anchor Tony Dokoupil went to King, who was appearing from inside a van outside the studio.
“I never expected to be sitting in a van,” she said. “I came, ready to go to work. There was an exposure. I have had a test, and now we are waiting for the results of my test. So rather than take a chance and hurt anyone else, or somebody else would be affected, I am down in my van. Rather than isolating in her office, King said that she wanted to appear on the show to present her interview with the parents of Bakari Henderson. She said that she was “stunned” by the positive test, given that she has routinely tested negative.
Dokoupil later said that that King and Duthiers had tested positive.

She’ll continue to co-host CBS Mornings, and told listeners on her SiriusXM show, Gayle King in the House, “I officially signed on the dotted line. So I will be with CBS a little longer.”
There had been some speculation about her future, but CNN reported last week that she had decided to stay at the network.
On her show, she also addressed some of the speculation about her future, including that she wanted to be in California and that she has been courted by other networks.
“I don’t know why people thought that just because you have a grandchild now all of a sudden you just want to give up your career and go sit in California,” King said. “No. I still, you know, I still...

Edward R. Murrow and Fred W. Friendly were journalism visionaries whose moves at CBS in the 1950s continue to define that company’s news division. Yet even they might be surprised to see where some of their ideas are heading.

Update, with video Comedian Bob Saget gave one of his final interviews to CBS News’ chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon Lapook last month, and the talk aired today on CBS Mornings.
Watch the interview above.
In the interview, which was taped Dec. 6, Saget speaks to Lapook about losing his sister in 1994 to scleroderma, a connective tissue disease. Saget explains how humor and performing helped him cope with the grief, saying, “It was a defense mechanism, and it truly helped me survive.”
Saget, who starred in television’s Full House and hosted American’s Funniest Home Videos, died Jan. 9 in his room at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Orlando, Florida (he had performed in nearby Ponte Vedra Beach the previous evening). Although a cause of death has not yet been determined, a Florida medical examiner has ruled out drugs or foul play.
Lapook’s interview with Saget aired Friday, Jan. 14, on CBS Mornings.

Updated, with additional coverage details: The first anniversary of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol will be marked by continuous coverage across the broadcast and cable news networks, as reporters and anchors recount the events of that day while sharing plenty of consternation over what has happened since.
The political polarization that has gripped Washington, and much of the country, will be evident by who is expected to participate in commemoration events. Few Republicans are expected, with President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Senate and House Democratic leaders slated to speak at a ceremony Thursday morning.
Former President Donald Trump, whose false claims that the election was stolen from him led his supporters to storm the Capitol, nixed plans to hold a press conference at Mar-a-Lago that would have been a kind of counterprogramming to the D.C. events. While there were reports that Trump’s...

And you thought Nate Burleson replacing Anthony Mason would be the only new part of “CBS This Morning” this fall. Starting next week, hosts Burleson, Gayle King and Tony Dokoupil will have 3,000 square feet to play with. And play they will. But also do serious news — depending on the hour. CBS News wants to spread some of its venerable newsmagazine “Sunday Morning” to other days of the week.
Starting September 7, the entire CBS morning schedule will be treated as a larger franchise, with weekdays and Saturdays featuring some of the in-depth and longform features for which the Sunday show — a TV-news institution — is best known.
The weekday program, which features Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and new co-host Nate Burleson, will be retitled “CBS Mornings,” and will be part of a lineup that includes “CBS Saturday Morning” and “CBS Sunday Morning.” Once known as “CBS This Morning,” the show will continue to highlight the breaking news of the day and the interactions of its hosts, but place new emphasis on longform stories in its second hour. The Saturday and Sunday shows, hosted by Jeff Glor, Dana Jacobson and Michelle Miller and by Jane Pauley, respectively, will continue with the formats to which their viewers are accustomed.

Four of TV’s top news programs — ABC’s “Good Morning America,” “CBS Evening News,” “NBC Nightly News” and the fourth hour of NBC’s “Today” morning franchise — are on the hunt for executive producers. Some prominent TV journalists are testing nontraditional ventures, while “CBS This Morning” shook up its roster by bringing in football analyst Nate Burleson to share anchoring duties with Gayle King and Tony Dokoupil. Former NFL wideout Nate Burleson is replacing Anthony Mason as “CBS This Morning” co-host, a move the morning show certainly hopes will boost ratings. Burleson, who will continue his work with NFL Network, is already a standout on CBS’ “The NFL Today.” He’ll join Gayle King and Tony Dokoupil at the CBS News morning program in September, while Mason transitions to a culture-reporting role. “CBS This Morning” needs all the help it can get. The daily talk and news program ranks third out of the big three broadcast networks’ morning shows, and really isn’t even all that close in viewership to NBC’s “Today” show or ABC’s “Good Morning America.” But “CBS This Morning” is trending closer to its competition this season than last, when the Covid-19 pandemic played more of a factor in TV production. The disparity is still pretty vast. Overall leader “GMA” currently has...

Nate Burleson To Join ‘CBS This Morning’ As Co-Host, Anthony Mason To Move To Culture Reporting Role
CBS This Morning is shaking up its co-host lineup, with Nate Burleson joining the show in September.
Burleson will join Gayle King and Tony Dokoupil on the show. Burleson had guest hosted Ctm in May.
Anthony Mason, co-host since 2019, will shift to a role as reporter on culture.
The network said that Burleson will continue as an analyst on The NFL Today. He joined CBS Sports in 2017.
Burleson’s new role was part of a new agreement with the network for the former NFL player. It also includes appearances on Nickelodeon, while he’ll have an expanded role on the NFL Network.
The changes are the latest for the show since Shawna Thomas joined as executive producer earlier this year, with plans to move to a new Times Square studio this fall. They also are the latest changes at the news division since Neeraj Khemlani and Wendy McMahon were named...

There will be a surprising new face waiting to greet viewers at “CBS This Morning.”
Nate Burleson, the former NFL wide receiver and current CBS Sports football analyst, is joining the program, according to three people familiar with the matter. These people said Burleson is seen as a potential successor to some of the current anchors at the show, and the move will break up the current group of co-anchors: Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil. Mason, a veteran CBS News correspondent who has filled many roles, including as interim anchor of “CBS Evening News,” is expected to depart and take on a new role as a cultural correspondent. King, who has been with “CBS This Morning” since 2012 and has stood at the center of the show since it was revamped following the departure of Charlie Rose, has a contract that ends next year.
CBS News declined to make executives available for comment.

CBS This Morning is getting another shakeup, the first under new CBS News co-presidents Neeraj Khemlani and Wendy McMahon and under new executive producer Shawna Thomas.
The latest tweak to the morning show will see co-anchor Anthony Mason depart to become a culture correspondent for CBS News, with his seat at the table taken by former NFL player and Good Morning Football and NFL Today analyst Nate Burleson. Burleson was a guest anchor on the program in May, while Tony Dokoupil was on paternity leave.

CBS This Morning will move to a new studio in Times Square, as it sets up its broadcast from ViacomCBS’ world headquarters at 1515 Broadway.
The show already broadcast from the location for a week last year, when the network set up its Election Night coverage there.
The network said that co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil will have new ways to conduct interviews and the facility will also be geared to blending feeds from the network’s news division and affiliates. Shawna Thomas, who became executive producer of the show in February, said in a statement that the facility would be a “more technically advanced studio that has more space, more cameras and more looks.” She also indicated that a goal was to make it different from other morning programs with some “elements of whimsy.”

It’s just the latest salvo in TV’s never-ending morning-news wars: CBS’ Gayle King is about to stroll into territory long dominated by ABC’s Robin Roberts.
Starting this fall, “CBS This Morning” will hold forth from a new studio in New York’s Times Square. The facility is located in the corporate headquarters of CBS News’ corporate parent, ViacomCBS, and once hosted the long-running MTV program “Trl.” It can be seen from the windows of the New York set that houses ABC morning rival “Good Morning America,” which operates a few blocks away. The decision was unveiled Thursday afternoon to CBS affiliates by Neeraj Khemlani and Wendy McMahon, the two executives recently placed in charge of the company’s news and stations units.
The studio will give the show’s team new ways to tell stories and new room to display them to viewers, says Shawna Thomas, who...

CBS is searching for a successor to succeed Susan Zirinsky to lead its news division.
Zirinsky plans to step down after a two-year tenure as president of CBS News, according to sources. The Wall Street Journal first reported on her plans, and that she is nearing a deal to take a production partnership with parent ViacomCBS.
In addition to her title as president of CBS News, Zirinsky has also retained her title of senior executive producer. She first joined the network in 1972, and she has had a legendary career as news producer.

ViacomCBS has been searching for a successor to CBS News President Susan Zirinsky, according to people familiar with the matter, as media companies place new emphasis on their news divisions to attract the big, live audiences that advertisers and distributors continue to crave while more consumers migrate to streaming video.
George Cheeks, CEO of ViacomCBS’ CBS assets, has been holding talks with potential candidates for weeks, according to these people. There is no set timeline for Zirinsky to step down. She is likely to take a new role as a top producer of CBS News programming that can appear across the company’s venues, whether they include the CBS broadcast network, its Cbsn live-streaming portal, or its subscription-based streaming hub, Paramount Plus. Zirinsky has long been known for her love of overseeing news production, and retained a title as a senior executive producer when she took on the role of president.
