Rhiannon Giddens appeared on The Daily Show to perform her recent song “Another Waste Life” and to discuss her Pulitzer-winning opera, Omar, with current host Michael Kosta. Giddens offered a poignant, emotional rendition of “Another Wasted Life,” which comes off her latest LP, You’re the One.
During her interview with Kosta, Giddens discussed creating Omar, as well as the tragic story of Kalief Browder, whose suicide in prison inspired “Another Wasted Life.” She also spoke about the cultural importance of the banjo in American history, reflecting on her love...

Opening with a fiddle and banjo straight out of a folk recital, “You’re the One,” the title track on Rhiannon Giddens’ third album under her own name, starts the way one would expect a Giddens song to open. Addressing one of her children, she sings in a voice that’s warm and comforting, yet firm and watchful. Then the unexpected happens: With a jolt of drums and crashing chords, the music erupts in a mini-maelstrom, and you’re neither in Kansas, or a typical Giddens album, anymore.

Like a peckish panda let loose in a showroom for bamboo patio furniture, the modern audience’s craving for true-life stories is seemingly insatiable. And like said ursine gnawing greedily on a flavorful teakwood club chair, nonfiction has been steadily gobbling up narrative filmmaking, with almost every major news item of the last 40 years being dutifully reimagined as a prestige limited series. And sure, projects like HBO’s Love and Death or Hulu’s The Dropout can help fill the void abdicated by the mid-budget studio drama, but where does that leave actual documentary movies—or documentary filmmakers for that matter?
While there’s certainly not an overabundance of industry support out there for emerging nonfiction filmmakers, there is at the very least the Film Independent Documentary Lab. And today, we’re thrilled to welcome seven new Fellows and six new projects to the 2023 Doc Lab cohort. “Documentary filmmakers remain...

Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) is going to be questioning himself in the Law & Order Season 22 fall finale. In “The System,” airing December 8, a suspect arrested for murder escapes police custody after months of waiting for his day in court. As a hostage situation erupts, Shaw must re-examine his conduct as the arresting officer. Plus, Price (Hugh Dancy) questions his faith in the justice system. Brooks looks ahead to the fall finale. Preview the case. When it begins, how much is he questioning his previous actions? Mehcad Brooks: Shaw got a confession from a kid who appeared to have murdered someone, comes out later that he didn’t, and there’s video evidence to support that. That tears Shaw up inside, but this kid, much like Kalief Browder, he was in Rikers for something he didn’t do, and it was tearing this kid up inside. So I liken...

True crime is a genre that has taken over, allowing many people who have found themselves curious by these cases have a sense of understanding.
With women being the predominant victims in these situations, watching this content allows them a sense of control.
It is almost like the more we know, the better prepared we can be.
The influx of documentaries also allows a bigger platform for certain stories that deserve to be heard.
And sometimes, it is just about you being in the mood to sit down and watch some true crime.
These are just a few true crime options worth the watch because they are truly fascinating watches or because of the conversations that started afterward.
With many more coming this year, it felt only right to get ready by looking back at some of the most fascinating so far.

The fourth and final chapter of Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed Netflix miniseries When They See Us is entirely about the prison ordeal of Korey Wise, the oldest member of the Central Park Five. He had a vastly different experience than the other four boys after their conviction for the brutal 1989 rape and assault of Trisha Meili, solely because he was the only one old enough to go to prison with adults. Wise served 12 years in prison — five years longer than any of the others — before their eventual exoneration in 2002. But...

For writer-director Barry Jenkins, the story of If Beale Street Could Talk isn’t entirely found in its plot, but rather in its impressionistic, sometimes dialogue-free scenes that unfold for minutes at a time.
“I think they advance the emotion in a very concrete way,” he said at Deadline’s Contenders New York event. “When you read a novel, you read the dialogue between characters but then the author will go on this riff. That’s the interior life of these characters. Cinema is always trying to find a way to communicate that interior life.”
One example is a scene in which Regina King’s character is standing at a mirror. Sharon’s daughter, played by KiKi Layne, is pregnant and trying to clear the name of her wrongly convicted husband, who is played by Stephan James. The two-and-a-half-minute scene in the film captures a three-page passage in the book,...

Annabella Sciorra, who has accused Harvey Weinstein of raping her in the early 1990s, got little relief from seeing him in court on Friday. Though she’s glad that “the law finally caught up” with him, the Emmy-nominated actress said in a series of tweets that “nothing about that felt celebratory to me” because, unlike defendants with less money and fewer resources, Weinstein was allowed to return to “his other hunting ground” until his next court appearance.
“The smirk on his face as he was led out of the police station in cuffs made me physically sick. The public statement from his lawyer was intended only to denigrate all the brave women who came forward and spoke out against him,” Sciorra wrote.
“And I got no relief from seeing this monster walk into court, then sneak out the back door after posting a million dollar bond. All that says is,...

Emmy-nominated actress Annabella Sciorra said via Twitter today that she received “no relief” from movie mogul Harvey Weinstein’s arrest, saying he should be behind bars instead of out on bail. Sciorra has accused Weinstein of raping her.
“If there was truly ‘equal justice under the law’, Harvey Weinstein would be behind bars in Rikers today, waiting for his own day in court, not free to roam New York, his other hunting ground, wearing an ankle bracelet,” Sciorra tweeted.
Weinstein is free on $1 million bail. He was arraigned Friday in New York after turning himself in. He faces two counts of rape and one count of committing a criminal sexual act, based on accounts of assaults by two women.

Jay Z Shares Pens Thought-Provoking Takedown of 'Exploitative' Prison Bail Industry for Father's Day
For Father's Day, Jay Z wants to direct the attention outward, not in.

The Spike docu-series “Time: The Kalief Browder Story” ended its run Wednesday on a hopeful note, as New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio last week announced a plan to close Rikers Island.
The late-breaking news led Spike and “Time” executive producers Harvey Weinstein and Jay Z to update the finale with the news. Rikers Island is where 16-year-old Browder was confined for three years – two of them in solitary confinement – while awaiting trial for allegedly stealing a backpack. Charges were eventually dropped and no trial ever held, but by then the damage was done: He took his life after being released from the jail.
Browder’s brother, Akeem Browder, calls it a victory, but one with a lot of disappointment attached. The plan to shut down Rikers will take ten years, and the city would replace it with new jails across the city.
