Disney+ has unveiled a slate of Korean originals, as the streaming platform opts for a more targeted strategy in Asia.
Bolstered by successful Korean tentpoles last year like Moving and Big Bet, the streamer has ordered seven new titles to premiere in 2024, in addition to previously-announced shows including Light Shop, from Moving creator Kangfull, and Uncle Samsik, starring Parasite actor Song Kang-ho.
One of the biggest titles in the Disney+ announcement is Blood Free, which stars Ju Jihoon (Kingdom) and Han Hyojoo (Moving). It follows a former bodyguard haunted by the failures of his past. Unmasked stars Kim Hyesoo and is set in modern-day Seoul. The series follows a team of investigative journalists who are fighting for their careers after broadcasting a controversial story.

Disney+ is steadily boosting its output of high-end Korean drama. The streaming service on Monday revealed a growing slate of star-driven Korean originals for 2024, building on the momentum achieved last year with the critical and commercial popularity of hit shows like Moving and Big Bet.

The Pink Ladies of “Grease,” the most colorful Rydell High students, are back on April 6 on Paramount+. However, this won’t be the same collection of young women from the original film — or even its cult classic sequel. This round, we see how the popular clique got its start. The girls now have a show of their own: “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” a salute to 1950s teens who refuse to conform to conventional standards. The new musical series shows us Rydell High before Sandy and Danny start strutting down the halls. The show stars Marisa Davila, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Ari Notartomaso, and Tricia Fukuhara.

Much has changed in the nearly three years between “Little America” seasons. Back in January 2020, when the half-hour episodic anthology first debuted, Apple TV+ was only in its third month of existence. Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, and Lee Eisenberg’s adaptation of true stories featured in Epic Magazine was just the streamer’s eighth series. Sian Heder, an executive producer and co-showrunner, was best known for her years writing on “Orange Is the New Black.” An orange-haired cretin still controlled the White House, and American immigration policy was summed up by the enraging phrase “kids in cages.”
Today, Apple TV+ has expanded from drama, comedy, and family programming into unscripted, animation, and live sports. Its shows and movies have won the highest honors in TV and film, including Heder taking home an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Outside the entertainment sphere, an experienced leader has taken over the lease at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,...

Indonesian director Kamila Andini’s “Before Now and Then” was named best film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. The film’s lead actor Happy Salma was on hand to receive the award at a ceremony in Gold Coast, Australia, on Friday.
The film recounts the story of a young woman who escapes an anti-Communist purge and leads a quiet life as the second wife of a wealthy man. But her past traumas resurface in her dreams.
Although the win is the first time that an Indonesian title has been named Apsa’s best film, and the first time that a woman has claimed the prize, it is the third time that Andini has won a feature film Apsa. Previously, she won the best children’s film prize with “The Mirror Never Lies” in 2012 and collected the youth feature film prize with “The Seen and Unseen” in 2017.

Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-award-winning film "Parasite" made cinematic history in 2019. Not only was it the first South Korean film to win the prestigious Palme D'or and the Academy Award for Best Picture, but it was also the first non-English language film to win the latter award. All of its accolades are deserved! "Parasite" is one of the most riveting films to grace movie screens in a while. Bong makes a movie that feels equal parts heist and family drama, bringing twists that leave audiences speechless long after the credits role.
"Parasite" follows the Kim family, (barely) making a living by pooling their money and performing odd jobs. When their son, Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik), discovers an opportunity to teach English to a wealthy family's young daughter, the rest of the Kim family con their way into performing high-paying work for the Park family. Ki-jung (Park So-dam) poses as an art therapist for the Park's young son.

Hipster film folk love a good black comedy, and one that doesn’t hit too close to home can become a big hit. Bong Joon-ho has been making smart, clever movies for years, and this intense satire hit pay dirt, commercially. Neon played their Oscar season cards beautifully as well, with the personable director seemingly omnipresent at festivals and on NPR. The film itself? I find it wickedly clever, yet fundamentally humanist — it’s not mean-spirited.

On Sunday night, Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite took home the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, which adds to the success. The Neon dark comedy was immediately met with critical acclaim when it premiered at Cannes and from there, the buzz sustained throughout its festival run and when it was released in the United States it was a box office success.
The film became the best-reviewed movie of the year and was praised by critics and audiences, something that was unexpected for Bong.
“The film was released in October in the United States with box office results,” he said backstage at the Golden Globes after his big win. “I was surprised but thought it was inevitable.”
He added, “This film is about the rich and poor and about capitalism — and the U.S. is the heart of capitalism. I thought it was a natural response.”

Bong Joon-ho’s bizarre black comedy about a rich Korean family and a poor one in a modern-day Downton Abbey situation gets its tendrils in you
Bong Joon-ho has returned to Cannes with a luxuriously watchable and satirical suspense drama. It runs as purringly smooth as the Mercedes driven by the lead character, played by Korean star Song Kang-ho. Parasite is a bizarre black comedy about social status, aspiration, materialism and the patriarchal family unit, and people who accept the idea of having (or leasing) a servant class.
Parasite is about a wealthy Korean family in a modern-day Downton Abbey upstairs-downstairs situation, one far more unstable than the patrician caste realises. The film could perhaps be a bit more lean and mean, and deliver its jeopardy and payoff with more despatch. But it is an enjoyable, elegant, scabrous movie about a mix of servitude and trickery that is an interesting theme in Korean cinema.
