I know American Idol is no longer Godzilla emerging from the Ratings Ocean and stomping all over every other network’s primetime competition, but last week’s 8.2 million viewers (and 2.0 demo rating) is pretty dang respectable.

This season’s top 15 guys went head to head (voice to voice?) on the Feb. 19 episode of American Idol, and while there were quite a few stand-out performers, one contestant stood head and shoulders above the rest: Sarasota, Fla., resident Sam Woolf! Excuse me while I totally fan-girl over him.
Not only was Sam’s version of David Gray‘s “Babylon” a breezy romp of plucky perfection, but the charming brunette had the entire audience eating out of the palm of his hand. I hate to be ‘that guy,’ but Sam totally fits the mold of past winners like Phillip Phillips and David Cook – and by that, I mean he’s a handsome white guy with a guitar. In case you need a legitimate reason to check out the thirteenth season of American Idol, here’s one: This is the first season where none of the judges are embarrassed by one other.
Think about it. From seasons one to eight, Simon Cowell rolled his eyes at Paula Abdul, who was usually rolling her eyes on accident. In season nine, Ellen DeGeneres winced at all of Simon’s callous remarks as if they were stains on her syndication-friendly reputation. In seasons ten and eleven, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson giggled in terror whenever your great aunt Steven Tyler purred at female contestants. In season 12, the whole panel refrained from weeping when Mariah Carey would attempt legitimate criticisms and instead wind up reciting Jacqueline Bisset‘s entire Golden Globes speech.
But finally, with the new lineup of Harry Connick Jr, Jennifer Lopez, and returnee Keith Urban, the mix is mysteriously perfect.

American Idol‘s 13th season premieres tonight with a new(-ish) cast of judges including the irascible Dolphin Tale star Harry Connick Jr., budding U-Turn actress Jennifer Lopez, and grown-up Peppermint Patty Keith Urban. Maybe they’ll do a good job! I don’t know! But I’ll be there watching because American Idol is still, despite sinking (but relatively phenomenal) ratings, the greatest singing cotillion on TV. Here are five reasons why.
5. The Hollywood rounds give you the best highs and most hilarious lows.
Twelve seasons in, the Hollywood rounds of American Idol remain the most underrated part of the show and maybe the entire reality-competition genre. The bustling energy of the second tryout, where attention-starved contestants who’ve passed the city auditions jump to Hollywood and attempt group numbers in a Fanny Brice-on-roller-skates way, is often the best indicator of how truly talented and likable the auditioning contestants are.

The trinity of judgment has officially assembled! Are you excited for ‘Idol’ to return in January?
Fresh off the confirmation that Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. are all officially judging American Idol‘s 13th season, Fox has released the first promotional picture of the three judges in ‘action.’ Not pictured is Randy Jackson, who will be serving as an in-house mentor.
It’s obvious Fox wanted to scale back after last season’s dramatic panel, which seemed to constantly revolve around Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj‘s bitter rivalry. Swapping that cantankerous duo for newbie Harry and veteran J. Lo will certainly ease tensions on set; I can’t imagine either of them threatening to shoot the other. (Yeah, that happened. Never forget.)
HollywoodLifers, do you think Idol found the perfect trio to judge season 13? Analyze the group photo, then drop a comment with your thoughts on the judges!

American Idol has spent the last few years making headlines for its rotating cavalcade of judges, and today is no exception: Harry Connick Jr. and returnee Jennifer Lopez have been officially announced as Keith Urban‘s co-panelists on the 13th season of the show. Connick was one of the show’s standout mentors of the past few seasons, and Lopez was — hmm, amiable? Fine? Un-hated? — during her two-season stint as an Idol barrister. Is this changeup what the show needs?
I’ve argued this in seasons’ past, but American Idol has never been about the judges’ table. You can claim that Simon Cowell was the heart of the show for the first nine seasons, but the fact is, Cowell helped make the show great not because he was mean or funny or even critical, but because he made the show’s vocalists competitive. That’s what any great reality show...

Reality TV fans are acutely aware that American Idol — coming off a Season 12 finale that, year-to-year, was down 33 percent in total viewers and 44 percent in the 18-49 demo — is bracing for the kind of treatment that Tyra Banks gives to pretty young pageant girls on Top Model: A dramatic makeover!
And a report today from Vulture – that producers are considering a judges’ panel made up entirely of former contestants — certainly sounds like Idol is in for more than a basic cut-and-color during the dormant period before filming on Season 13 gets underway sometime in late August or early September.

Can you guess our pick for the best performance of the season? Better yet: Can you guess the One male vocalist who made our list?
Maybe you’re done with the twelfth season of American Idol, but I’m not. Before we officially switch off our DVR season pass and lock ourselves in for So You Think You Can Dance, let’s take one last look at the low-rated, but luckily lady-dominated season and pick the 10 best performances.
10. Kree Harrison, “What the World Needs Now”
Kree really impressed me with song choices early on in the series. This girl chose two Susan Tedeschi songs. She picked an effing Faith Hill song that ended up being great and original. And most impressively, she chose this sung-to-death Bacharach tune and improved on its original version (by the lovable Jackie DeShannon) by rendering the song in her glum, disarmingly unembellished voice. Starting out in a cappella?...

Did Candice pull off a win? And did Adam Lambert pull off his mascara? (Yes.)
“Candice, why you gotta make this all about you?”
Look. You can pretend the Idol finale is some grandiose, tasteless, freakish spectacle. You can even think that logically. Because it’s true and undeniable and shut up about it. But you can’t deny that the Idol finale reminds you — for a few shimmery moments — that these competitors are viable mainstream singers whether or not they actually end up being successful. They can work alongside real industry vets and not look miscast in their shadows. I dig that — especially when some of the veterans (Mariah Carey and guest performer Jennifer Lopez, in this case) look less than professional as they lip-sync their hits (and non-hits, in the case of poor Jennifer) to the horrified awe of millions. Come on, Mariah! You nail “My All” and...

American Idol 2013 Candice Glover won the entire show tonight,May 16th. The big finale show, kicked off with the top ten, performing "So Glad You Came" by "The Wanted," which was speculated to have been lip synced, lol! Tonight’s American Idol Season 12 performance finale began with a moment of pure F/X foolery: Candice Glover and Kree Harrison standing nose-to-nose with stern-eyed, tight-lipped, prize-fighter solemnity. Were we about to witness the unleashing of body-blows and hair-pulls, or had mischievous Uncle Nigel merely patched together two individual camera shots to promote the idea of a duel to the death for Phillip Phillips’ glittering tiara and confetti shower?
Um, of course it was the latter scenario — which became all too evident when Kree and Candice took the stage hand-in-hand, like sisters in The Hunger Games headed for a lottery...

Amber Holcomb may have gotten precious little screen time leading up to Vegas Week on Season 12 of American Idol, but rest assured there were plenty of musical moments percolating in the Texas teenager’s car.
Amber stopped by TVLine HQ to talk about how she prepared for her breakout Top 40 Week performance of “My Funny Valentine,” why she didn’t break a sweat tackling Whitney Houston’s “I Believe in You and Me” and what her struggle to remember her lyrics during Beatles Week meant to her song-choice strategy later in the competition.

Hey Kreepers, Dreamers, Candicanes, and Underdogs! Wow, last night's episode of American Idol sure was emotional. We all must admit no matter who’s fan you are, Candice stole the show with her cover of “Somewhere” from the “West Side Story.” Angie got some amazing reviews and Nicki Minaj even told her that her growth over the season exceeded her own expectations. Kree got two songs that were out of her comfort zone, but definitely connected with “Here Comes Goodbye” by “Rascal Flatts.” Nicki Minaj even told her that it was one of her best performances to date. One finalist will be eliminated on American Idol tonight...who do you think will move on to the finale next week, and who do you think will be eliminated?! Due to events beyond my control, I missed last week's "American Idol" Top 4 Redux and had to leave the show in the very capable hands of Mr. Alan Sepinwall. For readers, I assume that was like going to a Yankees game to watch Wally Pipp play first base and getting stuck with Lou Gehrig. So I apologize for returning. I didn't watch last week's episode, but I'm not exactly surprised that Amber Holcomb went home. Tonight, Angie, Candice and Kree will each be singing three times. That's a lot of performances and a lot of room for error. Click through...

While this latest American Idol rumor sounds completely ridiculous, we have to admit, it would definitely get us to tune in next season! Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are at the top of producers’ list of dream judges for next season, according to a new report from RadarOnline.com, along with P. Diddy and Pink.
Producer Nigel Lythgoe is reportedly “desperate” to get the misguided reality show back on track, as the feud between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj — which was supposed to attract a bigger audience — has actually turned many viewers off. The source explains:
It’s been a lackluster season for Idol and everyone involved with the show is well aware of it so that’s why producers are franticly working on lining up big name stars for season 14. There’s more...
