Exclusive: Walking Dead maker Skybound Entertainment has struck what it is calling a “first-of-its-kind” deal with Prime Video over a dystopian thriller series from Scandinavia.
Amazon has taken rights in the Nordics for Vaka but Skybound retains worldwide distribution and controls the show’s “global commissioning structure.” This means Skybound can strike deals with buyers and sellers in different territories while the door remains open for Prime Video to acquire Vaka for other regions further down the line.
Set in Stockholm and starring Aliette Opheim and Jonas Karlsson, Vaka follows the spread of a deadly insomnia epidemic. A disgraced minister must balance addressing the crisis and caring for his son, while an ambulance nurse goes to great lengths to save her lover.
The show is co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Unlimited Stories and Sagafilm, the latter of which was acquired by Skybound and 5th Planet Games last year. The Icelandic...

‘Deserts,’ from ‘Death for Sale’ Helmer Faouzi Bensaïdi, Leads Morocco’s Presence at Atlas Workshops
Marrakech — One Moroccan highlight at this year’s Atlas Workshops has been given a special berth, as its director merits: “Deserts” from actor-helmer Faouzi Bensaidi whose films have played Berlin and Venice.
A modern take on the Western, “It will be an abstract Western, but not a Spaghetti Western. It will be more existential. Man against himself, against God and against nature and coming to terms with his own interior violence,” he told Variety when he film was still a project, closing co-production. .
Those deals are now in place with France’s Barney Productions, NiKo in Germany, Entre Chien et Loup in Belgium accompanying Mont Fleuri in Morocco. The production is locked and aiming to premiere next year.
Meanwhile, five other Moroccan titles, this time in development are hoping to get to this stage of completion with the help of the Workshops. These projects are presented in the Atlas Close-Ups section.

"Stealing money is okay for me. But profaning a saint's tomb, is too much." The Match Factory released an official promo trailer for the indie comedy The Unknown Saint, from Moroccan filmmaker Alaa Eddine Aljem. This premiered in the Critics Week section at the Cannes Film Festival last year, and earned a few rave reviews from critics before stopping by a few other festivals. This Coen Brothers-esque dark comedy is about a thief who buries money on top of a hill fleeing the police. When he returns years later, he discovers a mausoleum built where it's buried and moves to the town nearby to try and figure out how to get his bounty back. Starring Younes Bouab, with Salah Ben Saleh, Bouchaib Semmak, Mohammed Nouaimane, Anas El Baz, Abdelghani Kitab, Hassan Ben Badida, and Ahmed Yarziz. This is an entirely original, very clever comedy from Morocco - not something we see that often.

A thief speeds furtively across the Moroccan desert as the police close in on him. Spotting an isolated hill topped by a lonely tree, he stops to bury a bag full of money under its branches. An ideal spot, he thinks, and one that will be easily recognizable once he gets out of jail, which he knows will happen. He finishes the job, steps down off the hill, and, like clockwork, the police arrive and off to jail he goes. Flash forward a few years and the unnamed thief, played by Younes Bouab, returns to his cleverly selected hiding spot to find the nearby village has discovered this unknown, unmarked burial site and built upon it a shrine to the Unknown Saint. The shrine drives...

Beautifully shot and ideally cast, debuting Moroccan writer-director Alaa Eddine Aliem’s “The Unknown Saint” is a droll, entertaining, absurdist fable about spirituality and greed that signals an important new talent. The events unfold near a derelict desert village, where, in a pre-title prologue, a thief buries a bag of loot on top of a hill, disguising the spot as a grave. Years later, when he returns to retrieve his booty, he is astonished and frustrated to find that a mausoleum honoring an “unknown saint” credited with performing healing miracles now covers the site. Moreover, a new village has sprung up nearby to service the pilgrims that the shrine attracts. Aliem manages to reap much fresh humor from this situation and a spritely cast of eccentric characters.
