In his second year at the helm as artistic director of the Africa Intl. Film Festival (Afriff), Newton Aduaka said his goal when curating this year’s edition, which unspools Nov. 11-18 in Lagos, was “to present a rigorously selected program with an international gaze.”
It’s an acknowledgment by the Paris-based filmmaker, who was born in Lagos but left more than 30 years ago, that the inward-looking Nigerian industry stands to benefit from exposure to “a wider international aesthetic of filmmaking.” Said Aduaka, “There has to be room for other kinds of cinema, other kinds of voices.”

The Stockholm International Film Festival (Nov 11-22) has unveiled the line-up for its 26th edition, comprising more than 190 films from over 70 countries.
The Stockholm Xxvi Competition includes Marielle Heller’s Us title The Diary of a Teenage Girl and László Nemes’ Holocaust drama Son Of Saul.
It marks the first time Stockholm has a greater number of women than men competing for the Bronze Horse – the festival’s top prize.
The documentary competition includes Amy Berg’s An Open Secret, an investigation into accusations of teenagers being sexually abused within the film industry; and Cosima Spender’s Palio, centred on the annual horse race in Siena, Italy.

The winner of Bam Screenings’ Cinecolour Fiction Prize, worth $10,000 in production services was Carlos Osuna’s Sin Mover Los Labios (With Lips Closed).

The Cannes Film Festival (13 – 24 May) has unveiled this year’s Cinefoundation Atelier selection, comprised of 15 in-development projects from new director talents.
The 2015 selection features 15 projects from 14 countries. The directors and their producers are able to meet with potential funding partners during the festival.
Cinefoundation’s L’Atelier, created in 2005, has hosted 156 projects to date, 103 of which have been released theatrically, while 40 are in pre-production.

In its Fifth edition, The Guadalajara Construye/ Films In Progress took place between the 29th and 30th of March during the Ficg 26 inside the newly christened market at the Expo Guadalajara. Submissions were open to filmmakers from Mexico, Central America and the Carribeean. One of the six is an invited film from Argentina, The Tenth Circle, which is a collaboration between Guadalajara and the Vina del Mar Film Festival. These six films currently in post were screened for an eight-member jury in which each member promises a substantial post-production prize towards the film of their choice. Notable jurors included Alfredo Calvino, founder of the reputable international sales company Latinofusion whose award consists of a $20,000Usd advance for the international representation rights of the finished film, and David Titra whose subtitling house offers laser subtitles on 35 mm and 500 dvds.
