I was always under the impression that Blumhouse’s Prime Video cannibal series The Horror of Dolores Roach (read our review Here) was going to be an eight episode limited series, but apparently there was hope for a second season, because The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Prime Video has decided to cancel the show. So the eight episode first season is all we’re getting after all.
The news of the cancellation comes four months after all eight episodes of The Horror of Dolores Roach were released on the same day back in July.
Based on the Gimlet podcast of the same name, The Horror of Dolores Roach came from Blumhouse Television, Gimlet, and GloNation Studios. The show tells the following story: After serving a 16-year prison sentence, the title character (Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone,...

Based on the hit podcast, Prime Video debuted the Amazon Original series “The Horror of Dolores Roach” this past July, and we’ve learned the series has been cancelled.
After just one season, “The Horror of Dolores Roach” is no more at Prime Video.
Justina Machado starred in the first season of “Dolores Roach.”
The eight-episode, half-hour series is a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale, a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and survival of the fittest.
In the series, “Dolores Roach is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a severely gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone, Dolores reunites with an old stoner buddy, Luis, who gives her room and board and lets her give massages for cash in the basement under his dilapidated storefront, Empanada Loca, the only remnant of her former life.

There will be no new seasons of “The Horror of Dolores Roach,” “Harlan Coben’s Shelter” or “With Love” at Prime Video, the streamer announced on Tuesday.
Originally created by Aaron Mark as a one-woman play, “Empanada Loca,” Mark created, wrote, and directed the original podcast and penned the pilot script for “The Horror of Dolores Roach.” The series followed the titular character (played by Justina Machado), “who returns to a gentrified Washington Heights, where she reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis, who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is quickly threatened, ‘Magic Hands’ Dolores is driven to shocking extremes to survive,” reads the official description.

The cancelations continue ahead of the holiday weekend.
Amazon has axed a trio of scripted series from its Prime Video service: The Horror of Dolores Roach, Harlan Coben’s Shelter, and With Love are all ending.
The Horror of Dolores Roach and Harlan Coben’s Shelter ran for one season, while With Love is ending after two seasons.
They are the latest cancelations at the streamer over the last few months following shows such as The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, which had both been renewed before those decisions were reversed.

Exclusive: Chris McCumber is departing Blumhouse Television after three years as President. The unit’s President of Production, Jeremy Gold, will step into the top role on an interim basis. A search is underway for a new head of the TV group, which is getting downsized, with several people — believed to be fewer than 10 — being laid off today. (Blumhouse’s total headcount in film and TV is almost 100.)
The staff reductions are coming mostly from the TV division’s Creative and Business Affairs departments, sources said. The unscripted group, led by Gretchen Palek, will remain intact, as will Blumhouse’s shared services groups including Production, Casting, Hr, Marketing and Finance.

You're stashing money in your cozy apartment and saving for that dream house in Jersey, but one fateful day, while alone at home, you get busted by the police during a simple cannabis transaction. The next 16 years of your life are spent behind bars because you steadfastly refused to snitch on your hustler soulmate, whose phone line has suddenly become unreachable.
Having lost over a decade of your life for a substance that can now be found at a local shop in your not-so-recognizable gentrified Washington Heights, you're desperately in need of a place to stay, a job, and answers as to why your no-good ex left you to rot. Much like her namesake, it seems Dolores Roach can survive under even the harshest conditions.
In The Horror of Dolores Roach Season 1 finale, it feels like Dolores’ (Justina Machado) luck might be running out. To quickly recap, so far she has murdered: the landlord’s son and the landlord himself, Jeremiah, a couple of neighborhood drug dealers, a local laundromat operator, a private investigator and maybe her sidekick Luis (Alejandro Hernandez).

This article contains spoilers for The Horror of Dolores Roach season 1.
The Horror of Dolores Roach season 1 dropped Friday, July 7 on Prime Video, telling the story of a masseuse who kills her clients and disposes of the bodies by selling them as empanadas. Those of you who have seen it (Spoilers!) may have thought the story was over when Dolores finally found her way to an address she had been told belonged to her ex-boyfriend, with the episode cutting to black as she leaps in to strangle whoever answers the door. But according to Aaron Mark, the show’s creator (and the writer of the podcast and stage play the TV series is based on), there is still a great deal more to tell.
Of course, viewers who can’t wait to see what Dolores Roach does next have the option of checking out season two of the original podcast,...

Cyndi Lauper has shared her new track “Oh, Dolores,” made for the new Prime Video series The Horror of Dolores Roach. Listen to it below.
The new single coincides with the series debut, in which Lauper makes a special guest appearance. “Oh, Dolores” sounds like it could’ve been a deep cut in her discography, blending exciting, scrappy punk with the bassy groove of new wave. Lyrically, the song serves as a foreboding message to the series’ main character: “Oh Dolores, you’ve come undone/ It happens every time, now isn’t it a crime?/ How they drag you down, Dolores,” Lauper sings.
The Horror of Dolores Roach is based on the hit Spotify fiction podcast of the same name, created and written by Aaron Mark. The first season focuses on Dolores, a woman who effectively starts her life over after having just been released from a 16-year prison sentence.

“The Horror of Dolores Roach” is the kind of show that tries to do everything at once instead of doing one thing well. Is it a horror show? Is it a comedy? Is it a riff on “Sweeney Todd”? Is it a character study? Is it camp? Is it commentary? Yes, it’s all these things, and yes, other series have lumped many-a-genre and multiple goals into successful ongoing stories, but that first requires identifying what elements work well together.
Good horror isn’t just gore. Good comedy is, well, pretty subjective. But “Sweeney Todd” isn’t just about cannibalism, camp is earned, and commentary takes prolonged focus. The Amazon Prime Video series, adapted by creator, writer, and executive producer Aaron Mark from his one-woman play (“Empanada Loca”) and subsequent podcast (“The Horror of Dolores Roach”), never cooks any one ingredient long enough for its flavor to stand out in an overstuffed stew.

Justina Machado may have sank her teeth into playing the murderous title character in “The Horror of Dolores Roach” — but she didn’t do it alone.
The new Prime Video series, premiering Friday, stars the “One Day at a Time” actress as a homicidal ex-con alongside Alejandro Hernandez’s Luis, a conspiring chef who disposes of her bodies by turning them into must-have Muy Loco empanadas.
“They’re toxic together,” she told TheWrap of the unlikely dynamic. “His crazy is crazier than her crazy, yet they need each other right now. They depend on each other. She even says it, like, no one’s ever done what he’s done for her. It’s sick. It’s twisted. But no one has ever done that… So she feels a sense of loyalty towards him.

“I’m not the monster you’re making me out to be, seriously,” Dolores (Justina Machado) insists early in Prime Video’s The Horror of Dolores Roach. “I’m just like you, if everything went wrong.” Frankly, it’s a difficult assertion to swallow. By this point, we’re already aware she’s been involved in a scheme to turn humans into pastry filling, Sweeney Todd-style. Even the most broad-minded viewer is unlikely to find much relatable about that.
But the promise of The Horror of Dolores Roach is that it’s going to try enthusiastically to mount the case anyway — and the fun of it comes from realizing it succeeds more than not. No, you won’t necessarily walk away thinking you, too, might embrace cannibalism under the right circumstances. (That particular argument is better waged in Showtime’s Yellowjackets.) But in between the sick twists, dark laughs and lively lead performances,...

When the promise of her newfound stability is threatened, she must go to extremes to survive.
Review: It is tough to say whether the golden age of television is thriving or ending. With the streaming wars imploding, the depth and breadth of content on the small screen has never been bigger. But, with dozens upon dozens of series, many’s quality seems questionable. The latest series to debut is The Horror of Dolores Roach. A co-production between Amazon Studios and Blumhouse, The Horror of Dolores Roach is an adaptation of the hit podcast of the same name, which, in turn, was an adaptation of a stage play.

Amazon Original series “The Horror of Dolores Roach,” based on the hit Gimlet podcast, isn’t shy about its influences. Giving a contemporary, gentrification spin on the Victorian cannibalism tale of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the new series from creator Aaron Mark injects winking nods at every turn and then some, including a reference to William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. As tongue-in-cheek as these knowing references can be, it also underscores how familiar Dolores Roach’s predicament can be, though it’s offset by Justina Machado’s relatable and empathetic performance.
Much like Sweeney Todd, we meet Machado’s Dolores Roach at the far end of a lengthy prison sentence she didn’t quite earn. Dolores took the fall for her drug dealer boyfriend Dominic and spent sixteen years in jail, and her release leaves her with very little to her name in a now-gentrified Washington Heights.

It’s a classic story. A man sets himself up as a barber, starts killing his customers, robs them of their riches, then disposes of the bodies by chopping them up into bits and selling them out of the pie shop next door. The story first appeared in the penny dreadful serial, The String of Pearls in 1845, and has gone on to be retold in plays, movies, and most famously, a musical.
It is a story that Aaron Mark has always been a fan of.
“I’ve loved Sweeney Todd for as long as I can remember, I always say it’s one of the great cannibalism stories that our species has ever produced,” he tells Den of Geek.
Over the years Mark has consumed many different versions of the tale.

Playwrightdirector Aaron Mark has a habit of leaving audiences in the dark. Not that his plays are especially hard to grasp, but the author who specializes sending chills up and down spines with his solo theatrical thrillers seems to enjoy having audience members sitting in pitch blackness for at least a part of every production. It works wonders for the creepiness factors.

The movie, by the way, was called “Assholes.” It premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, where it won the inaugural Adam Yauch Hornblower Award (a prize reserved for unique filmmaking visions); it also jolted audiences and critics alike,...
