In our annual Visibility Awards, we formally recognize the people who have positively or negatively impacted lesbian and bi visibility in American entertainment during the year. (See previous years here: 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004.)
From Best Movie to Worst Song to Lesbian/Bi Woman of the Year, these awards recognize the television shows, movies, music, books and people who entertained, inspired, or disappointed us in 2009.
Last year, some of the category winners were chosen by both the AfterEllen.com staff and AfterEllen.com readers. This year, AfterEllen.com staff and contributing writers chose the winners for each category, as readers will be given the opportunity to vote on a wider range of topics and categories in our first annual Lesbian/Bi Women's Choice Awards in January.
Once again this year, we've included international people, shows and movies as a reflection of the increasing awareness of lesbian and bisexual visibility around the world made possible by the Internet.

On Wednesday's Top Chef, the remaining cheftestants were enlisted for a challenging -- and patriotic -- task: Cook a meal for over 300 members of the U.S. Air Force and their families with whatever supplies, foodstuffs and cooking equipment they could find in the kitchen at Nellis Air Force Base. It was tough task, sure, but ultimately a heartwarming one that found the group pulling together as a team. Still, as always, someone was sent packing at the end of the super-sized episode. Quickfire: This week's guest judge should have been pretty familiar to loyal Top Chef Masters viewers: It was L.A.-based chef Mark Peel, and he presided over an "out of this world" potato challenge. (Padma's words!) The contestants had to produce a delectable potato dish from one of the seemingly zillion varieties of spuds sitting in the kitchen. Peel dubbed Jennifer Carroll the winner for her...

Someone was getting hitched and someone else went home on Wednesday’s Top Chef after the cheftestants were split into teams along conventional gender lines and asked to cook for a bachelor and bachelorette party with the men serving up food for the ladies and vice versa. Equally conventional: the entire wedding setup! Where were the Elvis impersonator, the drive-thru chapel and the “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” approach to late-night, last minute nuptials? Clearly this wedding was planned! Quickfire: Guest judge Todd English sidled up to a craps table as Padma explained the chefs' task: They had to roll dice and cook a dish in 30 minutes using the number of ingredients that matched the number they rolled. The winner would receive $15,000 and immunity. Last week's elimination challenge victor [1] Kevin impressed with his plate, as did last week’s runner-up Jennifer Carroll. But neither took the prize. Instead,...

Get ready to unpack your knives and stay for a while. Top Chef is back, baby. The sixth season of the popular reality cooking competition premieres tonight. This season, 17 chefs compete to see if luck will be a lady for them in Las Vegas. Please, TV gods, find a way for the producers to get show host Padma Lakshmi in a showgirl outfit.
As in past seasons, the show features two out lesbian/bi chefs among the 17 competitors. They are:
Preeti Mistry, a 33-year-old Executive Chef for the Bon Appetit Management Company at Google just south of San Francisco and Ashley Merriman, a 32-year-old chef at Branzino in Seattle.

I'm glad to see they're dutifully helping to fulfill the show's faux hawk and tattoo quotas.
From their Bravo bio videos, Preeti started off in film before moving to London with her partner of 13 years...
