Unless Pictures’ Meg O’Connell and Ruby Entertainment’s Stephen Luby have been added to the lineup of Screen Canberra’s Screen Pod program, set to begin next month.
The pair will join seven other screen representatives for the five-month market-centred initiative that aims to assist writers of diverse backgrounds in generating, developing, and pitching a screen project.
This year’s platform-agnostic program will be split into three streams – process, project, and pitch.
The process phase will comprise a combination of lecture-based training modules and practical exercises in group workshops, while in the project stage, writers develop specific projects with the market in mind, assisted by fellow writers and developers.
In pitch, participants hone pitching skills and build confidence, working in group simulations as well as real-life pitching opportunities.
The program will begin with a group session on July 10.
Early bird sale for Screen Pod registration ends June 17. Find information on how to register here.

Screen Canberra has opened applications for its annual Screen Pod program, a five-month market-centred initiative with aims to assist writers of diverse backgrounds in generating, developing, and pitching a screen project.
Participants receive story and market feedback via a workshop environment, as well as mentoring and coaching to improve the marketability of their project and skills as a practitioner.
While previously alternating annually between film and TV, this year’s Screen Pod will be platform-agnostic, broken up into three streams.
The first, Process, sees a combination of lecture-based training modules and practical exercises in group workshops.
The second stage, Project, sees writers develop specific projects with the market in mind, assisted by fellow writers and developers.
The final stage is Pitch, with participants to hone their pitching skills and build confidence, in group simulations as well as real-life pitching opportunities.
This builds to a pitching finale, where participants conduct one-on-one presentations to market representatives.

Thriller film, “Kidnapped” is close to wrapping up one of the latest movies into production in Australia, following the disruption caused by the coronavirus and stay-at-home restrictions.
Production is now under way in and around Port Douglas in the far North of Australia’s Queensland state, with a shoot that runs Aug. 17 to Sept. 9. The operation is following Covid-safe protocols established at national level and also those devised by the Queensland government.
Written by Shanrah Wakefield and directed by Vic Sarin, the film’s story is told through the eyes of woman living with her family in a tropical paradise. It is idyllic until their four-year-old daughter goes missing. Solving the mystery of her disappearance reveals previously hidden information about the family.
The cast is headed by Claire van der Boom and Todd Lasance.
The film is structured as an unofficial Australia-Canada co-production, involving Brisbane-based Steve Jaggi Company and Canada’s Sepia Films.

When the web series format burst on the scene in the early days of Youtube, it brought with it a great deal of promise for young creatives looking to break into the competitive entertainment industry. The shorter format and smaller budget requirements allowed Diy film-makers the opportunity to create, free of interference from studio gatekeepers, while the democratized distribution ensured that every series, good or bad (Oh, so many bad ones), had the ability to find an audience. Those series that did manage to cut through the clutter, gave the creative individuals involved opportunities they might not have had otherwise.
As the tenth anniversary of the web series draws near, now is the perfect time to see what impact they have had on careers. First up, Sophie Tilson.
In 2009, Sophie Tilson starred in the Streamy award winning, Australian web series, OzGirl, which Tilson also co-created and produced. The story centered on Sophie's character,...

Los Angeles- based The Australian Film & Television Academy (Tafta) is introducing two new programs later this year, one designed to coach teenage actors, the other involving workshops with top casting directors.
In another innovation, the Academy is opening its La Experience course, which started several years ago to enable Australian actors to display their skills to managers, talent agents and casting directors, to international students from around the globe.
The Teen La Experience will run twice a year, based on the La Experience but condensed to 10 days and aimed at teens aged 12-17 years.
The Casting Director Intensive (Cdi) workshops will enable actors to sharpen their audition and cold reading skills and time management over two days in six individual sessions with six different casting directors, including David Rapaport and Lyndsey Baldasare.
Founded by John Orcsik in 1994, Tafta is dedicated to teaching and helping develop the craft of acting in...

This is the first in a new series of profiles centered on the people who make web series. The goal is to provide a bit of insight into not only the actors but also the writers, creators, and even the agents and executives working in the web TV space. Hopefully, this will be a series that readers will enjoy. First up, OzGirl star, Shanrah Wakefield. Shanrah Wakefield grew up in the small town of Moe (pronounced Mowee) in Victoria, Australia before moving to Melbourne when she was 17. After a stint at the Lee Strasburg Theater Institute in Los Angeles, she returned to Australia and graduated from Monash University in Melbourne, earning degrees in Liberal Arts and Law. In Australia, one can earn a law degree in four years rather than the debt-crushing seven needed in the Us. “I think people will be surprised to learn I’m a lawyer”, she...

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...

The official nominees for the 2nd Annual Streamy Awards were announced this morning in a live streamed internet broadcast led by CBSNews.com's Shira Lazar and theStream.tv's Jim Festante. He could be warm and witty... or cruel and obnoxious. But there was never any doubt he was a true artist. We recall the life and times of Ian Dury, now the subject of both a new film and biography
In Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, the new Ian Dury biopic, there is a scene that faithfully records the first time Dury met his songwriting partner, Chaz Jankel. It is May 1976 and the singer has just hobbled off stage after a particularly ramshackle London pub gig with his band of bedraggled misfits, Kilburn & the High Roads. The young, clean-cut Jankel strolls into the dressing room, grinning widely, and introduces himself. "Do I know you?" asks Dury, fixing him with a malevolent stare. "No," replies Jankel, still grinning. "Well do us a favour then," barks Dury, "and fuck off!"
Kilburn's guitarist Ed Speight convinced Jankel to return to the dressing room. In doing so,...

We've said it before, but this whole web series movement isn't just an American thing. Sure, it's quite the rage here in the states and especially in our own backyard of Los Angeles. But still, there are web series created daily all over the world, some of which we can't understand what's being said, and we do our best to keep you fine readers up to speed on these foreign gems. News out of Australian web series scene today is twofold—first, that indie drama OzGirl has inked a deal with Virgin's V Australia to be on the seatback screens of all its flights (and trust us, those are really long flights) starting in Novemeber for a one year run of its 23 episodes through its free on demand video service. The low-budget indie series, which was shot for a reported $7000 (Aus), is no stranger to Us web series fans however since it launched last fall,...
