Antoine Fuqua is set to direct a feature documentary about Nelson Mandela, Variety has learned.
Provisionally titled “Troublemaker: The Story Behind the Mandela Tapes,” the doc will use newly discovered audio interviews with Mandela himself to deliver an “honest, accurate and definitive depiction” of the man who remains a global symbol of justice, hope and universal human dignity, according to a press release.
The “Training Day” director has teamed with Mandela’s close friend and former cellmate Mac Maharaj on the project, who will serve as an executive producer. While spending 12 years alongside Mandela in a tiny cell on Robben Island, Maharaj transcribed Mandela’s autobiography before eventually smuggling it out of jail. He later went on to become a minister in Mandela’s government.

The Brotherhoods true-crime book to film adaptation could land Robocop director Jose Padilha. Padilha, helmer of Elite Squad, is in talks to direct Brotherhoods, based on the book "The Brotherhoods: The True Story of Two Cops Who Murdered for the Mafia" written by Guy Lawson and William Oldham which Dan Lin is producing, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Adapted by Bill Dubuque, the book tells of two corrupt detectives - one working for the Luchese family, the other for the Gambino family. The man managed to throw cases, get rid of evidence, and even murdered. Mark Bauch is also producing alongside Lin. A very interesting upcoming release, and the film seems spot on for the Elite Squad helmer.

Exclusive: Warner Bros is rebooting its 1992 hit The Bodyguard, the film that paired Kevin Costner with Whitney Houston and became for its time one of the biggest global hits in studio history with a $411 million worldwide gross. The film will be scripted by Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer, whose action comedy script Family Getaway made the 2010 Black List and is a priority project at Warner Bros. Dan Lin will produce through his Lin Pictures banner, and Mark Bauch is co-producer. Scripted by Lawrence Kasdan and directed by Mick Jackson, the original was a fairly straight ahead tale of a Secret Service agent (Costner in a Steve McQueen homage, down to his hairstyle) drafted to protect a singing diva whose life has been threatened by a stalker, then falling for her in a way he fears is a distraction from his job. The new version is similar, including the love story,...
