It’s a wonder that Jane Got a Gun is even out in theaters right now. Anyone with even a passing familiarity with its production headlines will have read about its hellacious development cycle – whether it be the multiple delays, or the revolving door of talent like previous director Lynne Ramsay, and departed headliners like Michael Fassbender, Jude Law, and Bradley Cooper.
Gavin O’Connor, who’s built a sturdy reputation through elevated genre hits like Miracle and Warrior, was given the unenviable job to pick up the pieces. And while he’s created a fleet, nasty western that feels uncompromising in its violence, it’s also just as quick to jettison any of the themes that have the possibility to weigh down the story. In the last third, O’Connor isn’t so much tying up loose ends, as forcing the groundwork for the tidiest ending possible.

The January doldrums strike hard in Jane Got A Gun, an otherwise competent and richly shot Western that places far too much stock in its bland characters and unsurprising structure. The film, directed by Gavin O’Connor, is notably far more concerned with characters over action, but with clichéd personalities and paper-thin motivations spurning the drama into motion, it never truly gets off the ground.
Set in the New Mexico Territory sometime in 1871, the movie starts off with a bullet-ridden Bill Hammond (Noah Emmerich) riding back home to warn his wife Jane (Natalie Portman) that a specter from their past, Colin McCann (a mustachioed Ewan McGregor) is hunting them down. This doesn’t sit well with Jane, so she packs up her daughter, heads to a nearby town, and pleads for help from former fiancé Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton), who refuses to aid her initially because she might have broken his heart,...

- We Got This Covered
The ongoing saga of Jane Got A Gun continues today. After Jude Law left the film earlier this week, following the departure of director Lynne Ramsay, we received news that director Gavin O’Connor had stepped in to replace Ramsay, but who would replace Law?
Well, it didn’t take long to find someone as the La Times is reporting that Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Jeff Bridges are all being eyed to take on the part that Law formerly had.
The role in question is that of villain John Bishop, who “shoots down Bill Hammond, a former member of the Bishop Boys, leaving his wife Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman) to team up with her first love (Joel Edgerton) to seek revenge.”
Admittedly, this role doesn’t sound like it would be too well suited to Tobey Maguire or Jake Gyllenhaal, but I could definitely see Jeff Bridges stepping into something like this.

- We Got This Covered
We were beginning to wonder, as 24 hours had nearly passed, but yet another update has arrived in the ongoing saga of the western "Jane Got A Gun." The film, which this week saw director Lynne Ramsay and star Jude Law quit the project, while "Warrior" director Gavin O'Connor has been hired to try to get this thing moving, is still without a villain. The project, now looking to fall a week behind schedule, is in search for a replacement, and a few names have cropped up as possible substitutes. According to the La Times, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Jeff Bridges are on the list of names being tossed around to step in. The role would be that of John Bishop, who shoots down Bill Hammond, a former member of the Bishop Boys, leaving his wife Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman) to team up with her first love (Joel Edgerton) to seek revenge.

Joel Edgerton is looking to head west. The "Warrior" star is in talks to co-star alongside Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender in "Jane Got a Gun," a Western directed by Lynne Ramsay ("We Need to Talk About Kevin"). "Jane Got a Gun" takes place in the Old West and centers on Jane (Portman), whose no-good husband Bill Hammond gets on the bad side of a pack of angry outlaws. Under siege, Jane turns to an ex-lover (Fassbender) to help fight off the villains. Deadline reports Edgerton is in talks to play Bill Hammond. "Jane Got a Gun" will start shooting in February. The script is by first-timer...
