Robert Lieberman, who directed the sci-fi cult classic Fire in the Sky and won the inaugural DGA Award for Commercials, has died in Los Angeles after a long battle with cancer. He was 75.
His death on July 1 was confirmed by his manager, John Bauman.
Lieberman kicked off his 50-plus year career as an assistant editor in commercials but by the mid-’70s had worked his way up to directing. He ended up helming more than a thousand spots for McDonald’s, Hallmark, Oreo among countless others and winning the DGA Award in 1979 and 1995. He worked with talent ranging from spanned from President Bill Clinton, Ray Charles and Jerry Lewis to Michael Jordan, Anne Hathaway and Kenan Thompson, and much of this work was done through Harmony Pictures, the company he founded with partner Stuart Gross.

Hulu and Blumhouse Television have set a female coming-of-age story titled “Pure” as the September installment for their horror anthology “Into the Dark,” TheWrap has learned exclusively.
Here’s the official description for the movie: In this female coming-of-age horror story, several teen girls perform a secret ritual at a purity retreat and, when one of them begins to see a supernatural entity, the terrifying question emerges, what is more dangerous: the demon they’ve unleashed, or the pressure to conform to their fathers’ expectations.
The installment, premiering September 6, stars “NOS4A2” actress Jahkara Smith, as well as McKaley Miller, Scott Porter, Annalisa Cochrane, Ciara Bravo, Jim Klock and T.C. Carter.

UnReal star Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman has landed the lead role in Spiral, an indie film from Digital Interference production company. The narrative follows a same-sex couple raising a 16-year-old girl in a small town where nothing is as it seems. Kurtis David Harder is directing the film based on a script by Colin Minihan and John Poliquin. Chris Ball and Minihan are producing, while ICM Partners is handling worldwide sales.
