Supernatural ran for 15 years and is the longest continuously running American science fiction and fantasy show in history (pipped only by Doctor Who 1966-1989 in the UK). It has a devoted fanbase and has produced novels, graphic novels, a short web-series, and a Japanese anime adaptation. Surely, then, the show is a perfect jumping-off point for a spin-off series? That’s a no-brainer, right?
Except that there have been two previous attempts at a Supernatural spin-off, both getting a pilot episode aired during the show itself, neither of which were picked up by the network. Now, Dean Winchester himself, Jensen Ackles, is producing another attempt, with the first season of The Winchesters due to air on the CW this autumn. So, what does this one need to do to succeed where the two earlier attempts have failed?

Supernatural Season 15, Episode 18
Only two episodes left. The clock marking time until the end ticks louder each week. Now, there’s a bit of an echo to the sound.
Last week’s episode saw the Winchesters struggling against each other as it became clear that Billie’s plan to defeat Chuck was merely a power grab on her part. But naturally, things are never straightforward on Supernatural. Allies are not always allies, villains are not necessarily always villains. Billie’s attempt at grabbing Chuck’s position succeeded only in turning Dean’s sights on her instead of Chuck. Dean needs that outlet, he needs a bad guy he can punish. It’s the hunter’s way, and as we’ve seen in the past, the hunter is not always right.
This close to the series finale, the writing team, especially Bob Berens who penned this episode,...

Sam and Dean's work appears to be far from done. The CW has renewed their oldest series, Supernatural, for a 15th season.
A CW paranormal horror drama, season 14 of Supernatural stars Jared Padaldecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as both Dean Winchester and the latest incarnation of the archangel Michael. Supernatural season 14 kicked off with Sam recruiting everyone to help him track down Dean, and since he’s possessed by Michael, he could be anywhere. Meanwhile, Castiel meets with an unreliable source and finds himself in trouble, and Jack is trying to cope as a human, since his grace was drained last season.

Just because The CW didn’t pickup the “Wayward Sisters” spinoff doesn’t mean they’re gone for good.
Jody and the rest of the girl gang who appeared in Season 13, Episode 10, which served as the backdoor pilot for the potential spinoff, will be returning to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in the upcoming season of the longstanding drama.
“All of the characters are going to make their return one way or the other,” showrunner Andrew Dabb said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

After two attempts at a Supernatural spinoff, CW President Mark Pedowitz has come to the conclusion that what makes the long-running hit drama so successful is its leading men.
“I am concerned… it may be [stars] Jared [Padalecki] and Jensen [Ackles]. And there may not be a franchise beyond that,” Pedowitz admitted at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour on Monday.
However, “if there’s a great idea that [the producers] want to go forward with, we’re open to listening. It is a great franchise,” Pedowitz added.
The show’s most recent effort at a backdoor pilot for an offshoot, Wayward Sisters, failed to get a series pickup.

We're sorry to report The CW has declined to order the Wayward Sisters TV show to series. The project would have been a spinoff to the network's successful, long-lived Supernatural and aired as a backdoor pilot, during the current season of the original program. It did well in the ratings and drew a lot of social media attention, so the decision not to move forward is frustrating to the cast and crew -- and to fans as well (this writer among them). Developed by Andrew Dabb and Robert Berens, Wayward Sisters stars Kim Rhodes, Briana Buckmaster, Kathryn Newton, Katherine Ramdeen, Clark Backo, and Yadira Guevara-Prip. Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles co-starred in the Wayward Sisters pilot, which aired as episode 13.10 of Supernatural on January 18, 2018, on The CW. The entire Supernatural...

Wayward Sisters cast members and writers are reacting to the news that the CW has decided not to move forward with the Supernatural spinoff. It was the second time the CW did a pilot for a Supernatural spinoff that didn’t go to series. Instead, the CW opted to go with Legacies, a new series in The Vampire Diaries/The Originals universe.
Wayward Sisters co-creator Andrew Dabb was one of the first to share the news on Twitter

There are lots of scary things out there. Most of us aren’t normally scared of Werewolves, Vampires and Demons, but these are normal in the world of Supernatural. However, being alone at a sketchy truck stop and facing normal, human creepers and weirdos is something that a lot of people deal with regularly. According to Briana Buckmaster’s tweet, this is only the second time in the show’s history that the big bad of the week was not a monster, and instead a regular human being. In so many ways, this is more terrifying than a monster because, in theory, something like this

Friends, the answer to your Supernatural-esque Buffy the Vampire Slayer dreams might have just arrived. We've only just seen a backdoor pilot to Wayward Sisters, the lady-centered Supernatural spinoff, but so far there's a lot to like. It's essentially an adopted family of Buffys, led by Kim Rhodes as Sheriff Jody Mills, all learning to wield shotguns and kill monsters. Tonight's pilot put a lot of focus on Claire Novak (Kathryn Newton), who was called back by Sheriff Mills to help find Sam and Dean, who had gone missing. Normally at this time of year, we’re gearing up to see exactly how Sam and Dean Winchester will get themselves out of whatever jam the midseason finale of Supernatural left them in. In fact, we’re in that situation yet again, but this time around, they’re going to need some major help from outside parties.
Incidentally enough, said help will come in the form of Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes), Claire Novak (Kathryn Love Newton), Donna Hanscum (Brianna Buckmaster), Alex (Katherine Ramdeen) and the recently introduced Patience (Clark Backo) – as well as newcomer Kaia (Yadira Guevara-Prip), thus setting up the hopeful Wayward Sisters spinoff.

That said, you’d think one or two of them would be ripe for a spinoff, but, originally, The CW intended on going in a different direction.

The premiere picks up with Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) still reeling from the loss of so many: their mother Mary (Samantha Smith) whom Lucifer (Pellegrino) took care of, Castiel (Misha Collins), and Crowley (Mark Sheppard). Even for a show with a high body count, those deaths have to sting and make a difference to our heroes. And they do. Despite what viewers know – that Castiel will be back in some form, and that Mary is in the alternate world with Lucifer – there’s a mournful yet resigned tone to the episode. This is the reality when you hunt monsters, and maybe too,...

Deadline reports another attempt at a Supernatural spinoff is in the works at The CW. The project, entitled Wayward Sisters, would star Kim Rhodes reprising her Supernatural character, Sheriff Jody Mills. CW President Mark Pedowitz has wanted another stab at a spinoff, for quite some time. Wayward Sisters will be introduced as a backdoor pilot in the 13th season of Supernatural, starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. It will feature Jody fostering troubled young women, whose families have been killed by monsters and demons. Armed with her experience in law enforcement and monster hunting, she will train them to become a fierce female fighting force. There's no word yet on whether the characters Claire Novak (Kathryn Newton), Alex Jones (Katherine Ramdeen), or Sheriff Donna Hanscum (Brianna Buckmaster) will be involved.

Sibling rivalry is something I know very little about. See, I’m an only child, and so my exposure to this has been vicariously through others and by what film an TV has provided me with. I “get it,” but I don’t get it, y’know? It’s not Lost on me, it’s just not natural. Devil in the Dark is all about brotherhood and that rivalry, childhood trauma, daddy issues, and dear hunting. And an albino monster, that too.

The second feature film from Tim Brown has been a long time coming. It has been ten years since his debut film The Cradle. In between he has been producing flicks, for example he has worked with our friends from Antisocial 2, Bite and The Sublet. The film stars Robin Dunne (Syfy's Sanctuary), Dan Payne (Star Trek Beyond), Daniel Cudmore (X-Men: Days of Future Past), and Briana Buckmaster (The CW's Supernatural). When estranged brothers Adam and Clint attempt to reconnect over a week-long hunting trip in remote British Columbia, they find the tables turned by a mysterious presence lurking in the...

Tagline: "There's no escape from this." A few details are emerging for Tim J. Brown's (The Cradle) Devil in the Dark. This title will be launching through Video-on-demand platforms in early March. The film stars: Robin Dunne (Sanctuary), Dan Payne (Star Trek: Beyond), Daniel Cudmore and Briana Buckmaster. In the story, brothers Adam and Clint discover a supernatural power, on a long distance hunting trip. Finally, the film's official artwork is here, with more details to follow. The film's artwork looks very Danny Darko-esque. A large antlered entity looms over a small child, with the forest blanketed in fog. It is obvious that the brother's childhoods are influencing the present, with very little light in the darkness. Indie horror fans will not have to wait long to see this title. Devil in the Dark launches on March 7th, 2017. As well, a trailer is expected to roll this way shortly...

Given the number of seasons Supernatural has had — and the variety of beloved characters who've been introduced, lived, died, returned, rinse, repeated, or just plain passed through the Winchester's lives — there's no doubt there are plenty of spin-off possibilities for the incredibly popular CW show. Except there’s only been one spinoff attempt in the Eleven Seasons the show's been on the air. Back in Season Nine, there was and an episode titled “Bloodlines.” Supernatural hedged their bets by having the episode act as a backdoor pilot. Had it been a hit, Supernatural: Bloodlines would’ve focused on the clash between monsters and hunters in Chicago. When it was met with a middling reaction from fans, The CW was able to scrap the idea. No harm, no foul, no spin-off. Now that we're midway into Season 11, you have to ask yourself if it's ever going to happen. For many fans,...
