BBC Studios Productions CEO Ralph Lee will exit the BBC’s commercial wing in April. He is leaving after six years to “pursue a new challenge outside the organisation.”
BBC Studios has initiated a search for a replacement, with Lee saying “the right time to explore other opportunities.”
Lee joined BBC Studios as Director of Content in 2018 and was made CEO of BBC Studios Productions in 2022, when the BBC pooled its Scripted, Factual, Global Entertainment and Kids & Family divisions into one single production hub.
Former Channel 4 Deputy Chief Creative Officer Lee has overseen production on returning and continuing titles such as Strictly Come Dancing, Happy Valley 3, EastEnders, Doctor Who, Prehistoric Planet, Good Omens, The Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final, Planet Earth III, The Coronation of King Charles III, Silent Witness and Black Ops – and original podcast series such as Vishal and Believe in Magic.

Ralph Lee, BBC Studios Productions’ CEO, will be leaving the BBC’s commercial arm in April after almost six years to pursue a new challenge outside the organization.
Since being appointed director of content in 2018, “Lee has guided BBC Studios Productions to unrivaled creative recognition – winning 111 awards and 400 nominations in the ’22/’23 financial year alone – and becoming the most awarded production group at the BAFTA and Rts Awards,” BBC Studios said on Thursday.
BBC Studios has initiated a search for Lee’s successor.
“Ralph’s leadership has been a game-changer for our production business, taking BBC Studios to creative and award-winning heights in every genre, both domestically and internationally,” said BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell. “His calm stewardship through and out of the Covid pandemic was invaluable, and he’s attracted outstanding talent like Kate Ward, Rich Knight and Cecilia Persson to our organization, whilst overseeing global expansion and growth among our production units,...

VidIQ has acquired Creator Now. The former company, which supports more than three million creators through its proprietary analytics platform, is the new owner of the learning hub co-founded by Eric ‘Airrack‘ Decker.
13-year-old VidIQ announced the acquisition through a press release, though the analytics hub did not disclose the financial particulars of its latest transaction. The deal is formally structured as a merger, which will allow Creator Now to continue operating as a standalone brand.
Decker teamed up with managers Zack Honarvar and Kate Ward to launch Creator Now in 2021. The platform, which has been described as “YouTuber film school,” supplies up-and-coming creators with tips, tricks, and best practices. The first Creator Now class was a six-week online learning program that cost $250 per entrant.
Admission was capped at 300 students, though Creator Now drew a 12,000-person waitlist. Airrack, known for his epic stunts and community-based projects, led the course shortly...

Kate Ward joined BBC Studios, the corporation’s commercial arm, last year to oversee its factual portfolio. Ward moved over from Vice Studios, where she was global president, and has jumped into the challenge of stewarding one of the world’s most powerful factual brands, which includes 66-year-old leader in the space the BBC’s Natural History Unit (Nhu).
Ahead of Ward’s trip to Mipcom, she sat down with Variety to discuss the changes she’s implemented over the past year and what she’s looking forward to spotlighting in Cannes.
How would you describe your remit as head of BBC Studios’ factual portfolio?
I’m in the really, really lucky position that BBC Studios Factual is one of the pillars of our production business. We are working across an incredible range from natural history, specialist factual, docs, popular factual and formats, so we’re really reaching across the whole of that factual genre.

Superpower, Sean Penn and Aaron Kaufman’s doc about Ukraine’s fight for freedom, is getting a launch in the war-torn Eastern European country today.
Fifth Season, which shops the film, has coordinated a day-and-date release for the doc in Ukraine alongside its launch on Paramount+ in the U.S. today.
The film will screen on leading Ukrainian net Inter, before running on other channels including Ntn, Mega, and Sonce, as part of a plan to support the Ukrainian people in their struggle against Russia’s invasion.
Superpower is billed as “a heart-wrenching glimpse into a country fighting for its freedom, featuring a series of intimate interviews done by Penn with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and others from seven trips over nearly a two-year period.” Penn and Kaufman are co-directors.
It began as a light-hearted project about Zelenskyy’s unusual rise from comic actor to President. However, when Russian troops...

Sean Penn’s “Superpower,” the actor’s upcoming documentary about Ukraine’s fight to maintain its freedom from Russia, is set to premiere on September 18. The film will be available to watch exclusively on Paramount+.
Co-directed by Penn and Aaron Kaufman, the documentary features several interviews between Penn and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over the production’s seven trips to the country over the past two years. The film chronicles the months before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the hours leading up to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to launch rockets into Kyiv and the devastating aftermath.
“Superpower” has followed an unconventional road. Filming started in 2021, and at the time, the documentary was intended to be a deep dive into Zelensky, an actor and comedian who played a president on TV before becoming Ukraine’s actual president. But while Penn was filming in Kyiv, Russia’s army attacked the capital,...

Creator Now, the online film school for would-be YouTubers, co-founded by Airrack -- known for having scrappily amassed 1 million subscribers in less than a year -- has raised $3 million in seed funding.
Investors include Upfront Ventures, Casey Neistat, Colin & Samir, Justin Kan, and Jack Conte. The venture is profitable, Airrack – whose real name is Eric Decker – tells Tubefilter, though is currently re-investing revenues back into the business.
Funding will be harnessed to grow the platform so it can welcome more creators. Down the line, Creator Now also intends to introduce more specified courses, including those around storytelling, brand partnerships, team-building, editing, and product development.
Decker launched Creator Now over the summer alongside Zack Honarvar (who serves as its CEO) and Kate Ward -- both of One Day Entertainment, his management company. Every two months, the program invites groups of 300 participants – who pay $250 apiece – to participate in a six-week cohort.

Vice reported nearly £160 million ($222 million) in revenues across its U.K. businesses in 2019, with “Gangs of London” producer Pulse Films driving the company’s production gains.
Filings posted to the U.K.’s Companies House reveal that Vice U.K. revenues — which span Vice U.K. Limited, covering digital and Virtue, as well as Pulse Films, Vice U.K. TV, Studios and other commercial entities — were up 50% on 2018 figures (£106 million).
Meanwhile, operating profits grew to more than £18 million ($25.1 million) in 2019, marking a 163% year-on-year growth. This was driven by a diversified digital and commercial business that includes the likes of i-d and Virtue as well as Paradise and Edition Worldwide, but the main driver was record growth from the Thomas Benski and Marisa Clifford-owned Pulse Films, which posted £62 million in revenues — a 43% boost on 2018 figures.
