Bob Rice, who teamed with Journey to release a groundbreaking rock music video game and represented top-notch composers like Steve Ouimette, Sascha Dikiciyan and Inon Zur in the industry, has died. He was 79.
Rice died Wednesday night of Copd at an assisted living facility in Santa Clara, California, publicist Greg O’Connor-Read told The Hollywood Reporter.
Rice created and executive produced what was perhaps the first rock video game, “Journey Escape.” Released by Data Age in 1982 for the Atari 2600 console and narrated by Casey Kasem, it featured band members Steve Perry, Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory and Steve Smith as primitive digitized avatars.
Gamers were tasked in the instructions with guiding each musician “past hordes of Love-Crazed Groupies, Sneaky Photographers and Shifty-eyed Promoters to the safety of the Journey Escape Vehicle in time to make the next concert. Your mighty manager and loyal roadies are there to help, but the escape is up to you!

Fall 2013 has been a damn good season for horror game soundtrack fans, with a variety of entertaining scores coming down the pipe – ranging from purely fun entries like the hard-rocking Zombie Squash to big studio-quality symphonic epics like Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. An even more colorful variety of styles comes together in the soundtrack for Dead Rising 3, the latest entry in Capcom's hit zombie-slaying game series that began as a Dawn of the Dead homage and quickly expanded to World War Z proportions. The third chapter takes the music to the next level, involving not only acclaimed composers like Brian Reitzell (30 Days of Night, Hannibal), Jeremy Soule (Elder Scrolls, the Harry Potter game series) and returning Dead Rising composer Oleksa Lozowchuk, but also a host of talented cyber-rockers including FEARnet fave Celldweller. The standard edition album weighs in at 40 tracks across two CDs, the bulk of which is dedicated to Lozowchuk's score and source cues,...

BioWare and Electronic Arts have announced the final batches of downloadable content for “Mass Effect 3”: “Citadel” is a single-player campaign expansion, while “Reckoning” is a multiplayer pack containing new weapons, maps, and skins.
Like all multiplayer updates so far, “Reckoning” will be free, but “Citadel” will run to the tune of $14.99, or 1200 Microsoft Points on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Neither the press release or official statements on the game’s forums mention the Wii U version of the game, which launched with some Dlc, but not “Leviathan” or “Omega.”
“Reckoning,” introduces new character classes to “Mass Effect 3”’s co-operative, Horde-like multiplayer section. In addition to the debut of the Krogan Warlord, Geth Juggernaut, Female Turian Raptor, Talon Mercenary, and Alliance Infiltration Unit, “Reckoning” features new weapons and equipment mods as well. The multiplayer pack will be available next week, on the 26th.

For a horror soundtrack junkie like myself, 2012 has been a pretty rewarding year for horror game music... in fact, some of the creepiest scores I've heard this year were written for games. It's also been a noteworthy year in horror gaming overall, including a fair amount of buzz about ZombiU, the first zombie survival horror game for Nintendo's Wii U and GamePad (check out our game review here). Accompanying this unique spin on zombie game tech is a wild, breathtaking score by acclaimed composer Cris Velasco, who recently added IGN's Best Overall Music nomination for Mass Effect 3 to his resume – which is itself quite packed with horror and dark fantasy titles, including Darksiders, Dark Messiah and Clive Barker's Jericho. I recently had a cool Q&A with Cris about his involvement in ZombiU... FEARnet: First of all, congrats on the nomination for Mass Effect 3. Cris: Thanks! Working on Mass...

Ubisoft's horror title ZombiU has been a huge hit since its release on Nintendo Wii U. Fans were excited to see such a terrifying title be brought life to life by one of gamer's most beloved companies, and they did a superb job bringing the undead zombie chaos.
We recently set down with composer Cris Velasco to discuss ZombiU and to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at this new title.
Amanda Dyar: ZombiU was a surprise hit for the newly released Nintendo Wii U after it was announced by developer and publisher Ubisoft back at E3 2012. How will your soundtrack for the unique title help create an atmosphere that will keep Wii U owners hooked to ZombiU?
Cris Velasco: My score had one main purpose: to scare you. I used a combination of percussion, electric guitars, processed human screams, detuned carnival organs, music boxes, and a string quintet...

Sascha Dikiciyan, aka Sonic Mayhem has won awards for composing music for games like Mass Effect 2 and 3, Quake II and III: Arena, and Tron: Evolution. Now he's doing his own thing with a collection of electronic-industrial-noise tracks on his forthcoming Ep, Doomsday.
More details after the jump.
The video was created by the folks at Zyclotron, giving Sonic Mayhem's distinctly chaotic sounds an appropriately grimy and industrial backdrop.
According to the press release, the Ep by the Berlin native Sonic Mayhem will include the tracks "Bleed Forever," "Sequence of Chaos," "Doomsday," "A New Dawn," and "125 GeV." Those names seem suitably heavy-sounding.
Doomsday is currently without a release date, but we'll bring you more info when one is available.

An additional 16 minutes of tracks from composer Sam Hulick are available on the BioWare site.
Didn't get enough the sounds of humanity's last stand? BioWare is making the soundtrack to the Extended Cut available to BioWare social users (login required).
Sam Hulick was in part responsible for the full Mass Effect 3 soundtrack along with Clint Mansell, Christopher Lennertz, Cris Velasco and Sascha Dikiciyan. Hulick has worked on all three games to date as well as scoring Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and (this is a cool one I'd forgotten about) Maximo vs. The Army of Zin.
The Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut Dlc is available now for free on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Plus, developer Gaia Interactive's Monster Galaxy soundtrack hits the top 20 on iTunes and renowned composer Howard Shore releases a second volume of his Soul of the Ultimate Nation soundtrack.
This week was nuts with new game music announcements, and I'm going to try to wrap all of them up for you. There's a lot to get through, so let's do this:

You guys really like the Monster Galaxy soundtrack: The 26-track album from composer Jeremy Soule climed the iTunes charts this week. Could it be because publisher Artistry Entertainment is practically giving it away for $0.99?

I’ve always said that the best new music being released now-a-days is coming from the video game composers. In the virtual world of video games, the new generation of techno-composers has been putting out some of the most amazing music I’ve heard that not only utilizes full symphonic orchestration, but also incorporates the use of electronic elements -together taking the art of suspenseful composition to a whole new level.
Two perfect examples of this new generation of musical masterminds are Cris Velasco and Sascha Dikiciyan, the composers of the Prototype Original Soundtrack.
The Prototype Video Game is set in New York City (home to the East Coast Fangoria Offices) as a virus infects people and the military attempts to put an end to it. The protagonist, Alex Mercer, has shape-shifting powers that allow him to create specialized morphs for attack, defense, or sensory enhancement. The music for this blood-drenched,...
