What began as a celebrated scientific breakthrough may instead ultimately lead to unnerving discoveries that prove that some phenomenon are better left unexplored. That’s certainly the case in the newly released psychological thriller, ‘Shortwave,’ which is now available on DVD and VOD, courtesy of Vega Baby and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Arriving on VOD this Tuesday, October 24th is Ryan Gregory Phillips’ sci-fi/horror mash-up Shortwave, which explores the phenomena of shortwave radio signals, and the dark and deadly secrets that they can carry along various frequencies. The film stars Cristobal Tapia Montt, Juanita Ringeling, Kyle Davis, and Sara Malakul Lane, and follows a couple (Montt and Ringeling) as they try to rebuild their lives after their daughter was abducted, but their new home is somehow tied into her abduction, and we see how the introduction of shortwave communication brings some harsh realities into the light.
Daily Dead recently chatted with Phillips about Shortwave, and he discussed blending genres for his ambitious feature, the integral part sound design plays in the film, as well as collaborating with his Dp Lucas Gath, and more.

In the first moments of Shortwave, young mother Isabel (Juanita Ringeling) steps away from her daughter to make a quick trip to the ladies’ room, and returns to find her child gone and the town mysteriously empty. A couple of years and one suicide attempt later, she and her husband Josh (Cristobal Tapia Montt) have just moved into a remote “smart house”, complete with iffy locks and talking brain, in the hopes that a change of scenery will help with Isabel’s steadily deteriorating mental state.

With Madre, writer/director Aaron Burns explores the dangers of dismissing maternal instincts with a cautionary tale that’s part psychological thriller, part body horror, and 100% unnerving to watch. It’s evident that Burns’ previous experiences within the genre world have served him well, because with Madre, he does a masterful job creating a harrowing and horrifying predicament that anyone can relate to, regardless of their parental status.
Madre centers on Diana Prieto (Daniela Ramírez), who has more than she can handle on her plate. Her son, Martin (Matías Bassi), has a severe case of autism and suffers from violent outbursts, with a tendency to hurt himself and lash out his mother, who is now pregnant with her second child. Her husband, Tomás (Cristobal Tapia Montt) travels frequently to Japan for business, which leaves Diana harried and ready to throw in the towel. One day, Martin goes into a rage at a local supermarket,...

"They're here." The teaser trailer has debuted for an indie sci-fi psychological thriller called Shortwave, directed by Ryan Gregory Phillips, and produced by the same people who made the indie horror hit The Invitation. The film is based on a theory of the origins of shortwave radio frequencies, and the more they investigate, the more weird things start to happen. The cast includes Cristobal Tapia Montt, Juanita Ringeling, and Kyle Davis, along with music by the indie band Mantaraybryn. This teaser is visually appealing and quite thrilling, with so many crazy shots that will make you wonder what the heck is going on. I can't tell if this has aliens or monsters or something else (or none of the above) but they got my attention. Here's the official teaser trailer for Ryan Gregory Phillips' sci-fi Shortwave, direct from YouTube: Josh and Isabel Harris, after suffering the loss of their only child,...

Just as he did in his films, Chucky has lots to say from his trademark “My name is Chucky” to far more sinister phrases.
The star of the Child’S Play films, Chucky stands fifteen inches tall and features real cloth Good Guys clothing, eleven points of articulation, his trademark orange hair and realistic glass-like eyes.

“Blood will tear us apart.”
Eli Roth means many things to many people. Some see him as one of the saviours of modern horror. Some see him as a detriment to the genre. For me personally, I think he’s a fantastic director. Cabin Fever knew exactly what it was and had horrible things happening to purposefully unlikable characters. Hostel played a part in bringing shock and gore to the unprepared mainstream audience and Hostel 2 was in a lot of ways a love letter to Italian exploitation of the 70′s and 80′s. That being said, 2015 hasn’t been a good year for him in terms of directorial output. I was so excited for both The Green Inferno and Knock Knock, but found both films to be Roth at his worst.

The Stranger comes to us as the latest vampire film to never admit it’s Actually a vampire film, because labeling yourself as a “vampire movie” just isn’t cool anymore. I’m sorry – if your character hates the sun, drinks blood and is immortal, he or she is a vampire. Deal with it.
While filmmaker Guillermo Amoedo proves to have a keen cinematic eye, this nightmarish infection thriller ends up being a big ol’ bowl of Meh. Presented by horror maestro Eli Roth, this Chilean thriller does have the atmospheric chills of a good mysterious-drifter-fueled caper, but some transitional techniques struggle to make Amoedo’s work flow seamlessly for international audiences. It’s a shame when audio dubbing reflects negatively on a cinematic watch, and while it’s something we try to ignore, one can’t help but be taken out of the fantasy on screen by voices that clearly don’t belong.

Stranger Danger: Roth & Amoedo Unveil Derivative Inclinations
Director Eli Roth continues his collaboration with the South American crew from Aftershock (2012), by producing writer Guillermo Amoedo’s sophomore directorial effort, The Stranger. The title is the filmmaker’s English language debut, previously helming a 2010 film Retorno. Unfortunately, the final result is about as mundane as its nebulous title would seem to indicate, slapped into a narrative as familiar as it is illogical. Still, technically speaking, it’s packaged better than some recent titles released from IFC Midnight (the 2013 Jeff Fahey starrer Beneath comes to mind). Those hoping for a dash of Roth’s predilection for intense splashes of violence may be disappointed, as Amodeo’s somber slow-burn never finds any such spark.

Directed by Guillermo Amoedo and executive produced by Eli Roth and Nicolas Lopez (who collaborated on Aftershock, The Green Inferno, and home invasion thriller Knock, Knock with Keanu Reeves), The Stranger is a vampire film that doesn't scream that it's a vampire film. In fact, it's very similar to the best parts of Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark. Cristobal Tapia Montt stars as the titular brooding stranger Martin, who appears at the house of Monica (Alessandra Guerzoni), a mostly irate nurse, and her son Peter (Nicolas Duran), a nice young kid. Martin inquires as to the whereabouts of his ex-lover Ana, and upon being pointed to the cemetery, harbors a severe death wish after learning that Ana has died. Morose and still as a statue, Martin...

"What did you do with the body?" Horror filmmaker Eli Roth is presenting this IFC Midnight release of The Stranger, an indie film from Uruguayan filmmaker Guillermo Amoedo. The horror-thriller story follows a mysterious man who ends up in a small town to find his wife but discovers that it seems to be overtaken by the supernatural, or something like that. The cast includes Cristobal Tapia Montt, Ariel Levy, Nicolas Duran, Lorenza Izzo and Aaron Burns. This wasn't one of the films with lots of buzz at Fantastic Fest where it first premiered last year, but if horror (or thriller) is your jam, you might want to check it out. Beware the blood. Fango got a bunch of exclusive photos (see them below) and a progress report from Chilean filmmaker Francesc Morales on his wild and surreal horror film Humanimal. We last brought you word on the movie, which recently wrapped, here.
“We’re currently working on postproduction and editing the film and are hoping to have the final copy in around two months,” Morales tells Fango. The movie, which showcases actors dressed in animal costumes, gained a good deal of attention from its unsettling teaser trailer (which can be seen below), which led Morales to secure a bigger budget to help him land better production values and round up a solid ensemble. “As the movie is a very surrealist story, it was necessary for us to make a teaser trailer to find investors,” he explains. “Last year, we shot 15 minutes of actual scenes that allowed us to show how the movie was going to feel and look.
