For those who like their talk shows with both extreme structure as well as extreme anarchy, good news coming for 2018: truTV is greenlighting a new batch of 16 episodes of “Talk Show the Game Show,” hosted by Guy Branum.
Originating as a live show back in 2012, “Talk Show the Game Show” was picked up as a TV series by truTV last year, and has featured an impressive selection of guests, including Chelsea Handler, Tiffany Haddish, Wanda Sykes, Moby, Margaret Cho, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Phoebe Robinson, Julie Klausner, and Nikki Glaser.
The show gamifies talk show culture as it pertains to both modern decency standards as well as television’s most purient interests, produced by Push It Productions with Wanda Sykes, Page Hurwitz, Anna Wenger and Branum serving as executive producers, while Emmy Award-winning writer Karen Kilgariff and author and journalist Casey Schreiner will return as judges.

Real talk: “Talk Show The Game Show” will penalize a guest for murder, but it adheres to strict guidelines for what that means. “If you murder someone during the course of the game, we don’t have to wait for the entire legal process to play out in the state of California,” host and creator Guy Branum said. “[Head judge] Casey Schreiner can just put you in the penalty box for a period of time, possibly even throw you out of the game.
“Though not necessarily,” Branum added. “It depends on the terms of the murder.”

Watch the entire “episode” below.

Formerly of “Awkward” and “Chelsea Lately,” the writer/comedian/actor played ringleader during the proceedings, which introduced the show’s concept. Utilizing a point-based system — two points for a name drop, three points for flirting with the host — it’s likely the first talk show to require a scorekeeper and actively pit its host against his or her guests. (And everything is scored, including Branum’s monologue.)
