Exclusive: Queer advocacy group Out in Hollywood released its third annual list of the best unproduced queer-focused television pilot scripts of the past year.
The scripts that made it to the list underwent a blind evaluation process overseen by Out in Hollywood’s Board of Directors featuring an all-queer-identifying panel of judges conformed of proudly Out producers, studio and network executives.
“In 2023, our mission feels more urgent than ever. From the political attacks on queer identity and expression happening around the country to the WGA’s fight for–amongst other things–opportunity, equity and creative agency, creating space and a platform for queer writers remains a necessary act of both protest and joy,” Board member Maija Gustin said of this year’s list.
Scripts are evaluated based on criteria including the strength of the writer’s voice, viability of the project to be sold in today’s marketplace, conceptual freshness,...

This The Lincoln Lawyer article contains spoilers.
In the first episode of The Lincoln Lawyer, it’s established that Mickey Haller is a mess. Fresh out of an 18-month stay in rehab, he’s got no money coming in, no clients, and a big gap in his resume. It’s only because of the murder of a legal acquaintance that he’s able to get enough clients to get back on his feet, and it’s only due to his skill as a lawyer that it seems as though he’s reestablished a practice and rehabilitated his professional life. His personal life? That’s another story.
Anyone with two ex-partners is going to run into complications, particularly when you share a child with one and share a business with another. When it comes to second wife Lorna, it seems as though both she and Mickey realize that their relationship, and their marriage,...

A familiar name around these parts, Mexican director Aaron Soto rose to public attention through his work with Rue Morgue Magazine, has contributed to these pages a few times over the years, and turned in one segment of the very strong Mexican horror anthology Mexico Barbaro alongside the likes of Jorge Michel Grau and Issac Ezban. And he's now hard at work on his debut feature, Ratas Del Bordo (Border Rats). Ratas Del Bordo is a horror fable set in 1989, were Punks, Norteños and Cholos fight a strange Witch in the Tijuana border, including a cool soundtrack of Mexican Punk music and a closer look at the culture clash of Mexico’s strangest city. Pablo Asento produces with Omar Yñigo in the lead. And for...

Mexico Barbaro
Directed by Isaac Ezban, Laurette Flores Bornn, Jorge Michel Grau, Ulises Guzman, Edgar Nito, Lex Ortega, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Aaron Soto
Mexico, 2014
There’s a line in Mexico Barbaro that goes something like, “Drain the blood from your sister’s vagina or I’ll suck your soul out of your anus.” And that’s not the most outrageous thing that happens in this horror anthology that pulls from Mexican folklore, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and From Dusk Till Dawn, among others.
Mexico Barbaro is proudly off the wall, and it boasts horror tales that range from the modern (Tzompantli) to the Hitchcockian (Lo que importa es lo de adentro), to the Troma-like (La cosa mas preciada). That’s an advantage: the entirety of Mexico Barbaro is likely not for anyone, but there’s bound to be at least one entry in here that plays to any horror fan’s tastes.

Ahead of its November 3rd DVD and digital release from Dark Sky Films, the horror anthology México Barbaro is teased in a new trailer.
"Eight Mexican directors have united to create a film anthology featuring the most brutally terrifying Mexican traditions and legends, brought to vividly shocking life. MÉXICO Barbaro presents haunting stories that have been woven into the fabric of a nation’s culture, some passed down through the centuries and some new, but all equally frightening. Stories of boogeymen, trolls, ghosts, monsters, Aztec sacrifices, and - of course - the Day of the Dead all come together to create a film that is as original as it is familiar... and as important as it is horrifying.
The directors represented in this anthology film are Jorge Michel Grau (We Are What We Are, The ABCs of Death), Isaac Ezban (upcoming Fantastic Fest award winner The Incident), Laurette Flores, Ulises Guzmán,...

As our own Andrew Mack reported, México Bárbaro is an upcoming Mexican horror anthology featuring cinematic adaptations of traditional legends from this country. It was conceived by Lex Ortega (sound designer for Frankenstein's Army) and will be offering segments by such directors as Somos Lo Que Hay's Jorge Michel Grau, Alucardos, Retrato de un Vampiro's Ulises Guzmán, and The Incident's Isaac Ezban. The anthology instantly became one of the most anticipated and promising Mexican films of the year. I had the fortune and honor to interview for Twitch six of the eight directors involved: Ortega, Guzmán, Ezban, Rue Morgue's Aaron Soto, M is for Matador's Gigi Saúl Guerrero and Babtized's Laurette Flores. In the gallery below you can read each interview and learn more about...

One of the most prolific directors in Argentina - with eight features to his name since 2004 - Adrian Garcia Bogliano has built a name for himself with a steady stream of low budget shockers. Titles such as 36 Steps and I'll Never Die Alone have been over-achievers for Bogliano, traveling internationally and performing well on the festival circuit. And now, with Sudor Frio (Cold Sweat) it appears that we finally get the chance to see what Bogliano can do with a production budget at least marginally higher than the price of lunch.
And the word is that he can do rather well. Regular Twitch contributor Aaron Soto just caught the film at Mexico's Morbido Festival, where he says it was the best of the fest. It’s been 20 years since the birth of Tetsuo. In my previous two Tetsuo films, I tried to portray the unstable state of the people living in today’s urban city. The idea of the human body turning metallic is a very simple but ironical metaphor. In Tetsuo the Bullet Man my third Tetsuo film, the progatonist’s body starts to turn metallic as well, but this time he turns into a deadly weapon, and fights against the fear of killing people against his own will. In that context, war is another important subject for me this time. I take pride in bringing out the tradition of the Tetsuo franchise as well as a new perspective to this film, in the simplest and steeliest way.
Story:
Anthony is an ordinary American businessman living in Tokyo, without knowing his happy life with wife Yuriko and 3 year old son Tom would end suddenly.

Yesterday cult film maker Shinya Tsukamoto unveiled his Tetsuo The Bulletman - the third installment of his Tetsuo series and the first in the English language - at the San Diego Comic Con and our very own Aaron Soto was there armed with his video camera to not only capture the official conference - which featured the unveiling of poster imagery, stills and footage - but to also score a one on one interview with the man himself. Catch it below the break! First video clips of the film itself included!

One of the frustrating realities of the Toronto International Film Festival is that with over three hundred films in the program it is a physical impossibility to see everything that you want. Such was the case with Voy A Explotar, the third feature from Drama/Mex director Gerardo Naranjo. Naranjo has emerged as one of the brightest lights of current Mexican film and though both Michael and I were hoping to catch this one I don’t believe either of us actually made it to a screening. Here’s an excerpt from the Tiff program guide:
Misfit Román Valdez is the son of a respected yet corrupt politician in the city of Guanajuato. Having grown up in a world of privilege, he does nothing but give his father grief, blaming him for his mother’s untimely death. After being expelled from the best private institutions in the country, he ends up at the same,...

I’m very pleased to announce a couple of new additions to the Twitch writing team, so everybody take a moment to say hello to the new guys. James Dennis - who weighs in below with and excellent review of Eden Lake - will be our guy in the UK while Aaron Soto will be feeding us news from Mexico. Both are great writers and very knowledgable so we’re quite pleased to have them.
