The Us talkshow host and comedian has overcome adversity to become a bona fide American superstar and a household name
In September, Ellen DeGeneres told the audience of her talkshow about the pros and cons of hosting the Academy Awards: "Pro: a lot of fancy designers will want to approach me and want me to wear a beautiful, expensive gown. Con: ain't no way in hell I'm wearing a gown." The audience erupted in cheers.
Such vocal approval is an indication of how far both DeGeneres's fortunes and Us public attitudes towards sexuality and gender have shifted. At the turn of the century, you could have been excused for thinking DeGeneres was down and out.
After spending two decades establishing herself as one of the most popular comedians in the Us, in 1997 she gambled everything on coming out as a lesbian, both in real life and in character on the...

This story first appeared in the Sept. 6 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. When it comes to presenting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters, the six major film studios are lagging far behind their counterparts in TV. Watchdog group GLAAD, in its first survey of the movie industry, found that of the 101 studio releases in 2012, only 14 contained Lgbt characters. While Universal led the list with a record judged adequate, Disney and Fox got failing grades. Photos: My Big, Gay Hollywood Wedding (Finally!) "Film is in many ways quite behind the curve," says Matt Kane, GLAAD's

Azealia Banks has taken to Twitter to call people's reactions to her homophobic slur against Perez Hilton "so hypocritical".
Continuing to discuss her online spat with the celebrity blogger, in which she called him a "messy faggot" when he took the side of Angel Haze during last week's feud between the two up-and-coming rappers, she wrote:
After Hilton and other observers slammed Banks' language, the '212' rapper claimed: "A faggot is not a homosexual male. A faggot is any male who acts like a female. There's a Big difference."

Adding: "As a bisexual person I knew what I meant when I used that word… When I said acts like a female I should've said acts like a c*nt."
One of the biggest gay advocacy organisations in the Us, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (Glaad), have now condemned her use of the f-word.

Most of the drama we usually see interior designer/house flipper Jeff Lewis involved in pertains to his reality series Flipping Out, which returns for its sixth season tonight on Bravo. Recently, however, Lewis’s trademark brutal honesty landed him in some hot water with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and there’s been a brouhaha building.
Lewis brought up the situation in an August 23rd press call promoting Flipping Out’s new season…
"I used to be really involved with GLAAD and I would go to their functions and I’d donate money and this is part of a - I guess, when I - when we talk about how I’m so upfront and honest, how it gets me in trouble…I was talking about a transgender person and I did not - was not aware of all - I try to keep up with all these politically correct terms,...

ABC should have known that airing a cross-dressing comedy was going to draw controversy.
The upcoming series Work It — about two men who disguise themselves as women to land jobs — is taking fire from two organizations that say the show is offensive to the transgender community. “During a period in which the transgender community now routinely finds itself in the cultural crosshairs, the timing couldn’t be worse for a show based on the notion that men dressed as women is inherently funny,” writes Matt Kane, the associate director of entertainment media at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

For many celebrities who participate on Dancing with the Stars, making it beyond the halfway point is an accomplishment in itself. But when an exit is predicated by some particularly harsh words from the judges, leaving the ABC show can feel pretty bittersweet.
Fortunately for Chaz Bono – who was told by Judge Bruno Tonioli that he looked like a “cute little penguin” on Monday – the author and activist harbors no ill-will toward the show that ricocheted him back into the spotlight this fall. “I was quite angry last night,” Bono told reporters on Tuesday. Tyler, The Creator's MTV Vma win has been criticised by an anti-homophobia group. The Odd Future rapper won 'Best New Artist' at Sunday night's awards ceremony in Los Angeles, but the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has since spoken out against the win due to his homophobic lyrics. Writing on the organisation's official blog, associate director of entertainment media Matt Kane explained: "MTV didn't choose the winner of the 'Best New Artist' category (that's chosen by public vote) on last night's show, but they did decide to nominate Tyler in the first place and put him on stage. "We hope in the future they will think more carefully about the message they're sending to their young audience before giving him another platform." (more)...
