4th Update, Oct 16: Casey Wasserman is the latest Hollywood heavyweight to speak out in support of Israel.
“There is no justification for this,” the Wasserman chairman-ceo – and chairman of the L.A. 2028 committee – reportedly said at an International Olympic Committee session in Mumbai on Monday. “I unequivocally stand in solidarity with Israel, but let me be clear I also stand with the innocent civilians in Gaza who did not choose this war.”
Referencing the terrorist kidnapping of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Games, Wasserman continued, “Unfortunately, the Olympics are not immune to the world we live in.
“At its worst, it is a platform for hate to express itself on the stage and we will always remember the 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team who were taken hostage and murdered in Munich.
“But at its best it is an opportunity for sport to show the world a better path with peace and unity,...

As the conflict between Israel and Gaza continued to escalate, Israelis and their allies in Hollywood pleaded for support and said they were riven with anxiety for the well-being of friends and family.
“Some of the immediate reaction is disbelief, rage and anger. And I think I’ve settled in over the last 24 hours to just immense sadness,” said Casting Networks co-ceo Rafi Gordon, who was born and raised in Israel before moving to the United States as a teenager. “This feels like a 9/11 kind of moment, where I don’t know what normal is on the other side of this.”
“People have tried justification for violence for 3,000 years and it doesn’t work. We need to find justifications for peace,” MRC co-founder and co-ceo Modi Wiczyk, who has close family in Israel, told TheWrap two days after surprise attacks by Hamas left some 900 Israelis dead and thousands wounded.

In response to the rise of antisemitic tropes in mainstream pop culture, the Anti-Defamation League has launched a Media and Entertainment Institute to engage Hollywood insiders and tastemakers in dialogue on general societal perceptions of Jewish people and how they are portrayed in media and entertainment.
From Kanye West’s recent outbursts to neo-Nazi demonstrations in Florida and other states, antisemitism in U.S. culture has grown in recent years along with the volume of hate crimes against Jews. As reported by the Adl’s long-term studies, the number of Americans who had antisemitic attitudes toward Jewish people jumped to 20% in 2022, compared to 11% in 2019, according to Jonathan A. Greenblatt, Adl’s CEO and national director. In the mid-1960s, when Adl began the survey, the level stood at about 30%. MRC, the independent film and TV studio behind hits like “Poker Face” and “Knives Out,” has found a new leader, elevating the company’s veteran chief business officer Scott Tenley to CEO.
MRC’s founders (and now-former co-CEOs) Modi Wiczyk and Asif Satchu will become chairmen as part of Tenley’s promotion. Tenley will now oversee all film and television divisions at MRC, as well as its strategic partnerships, legal, financial, and Hr departments. He’ll also look for “growth opportunities” for the studio, MRC said on Thursday.
Tenley has been the driving force behind MRC’s latest hot streak. Way back in 2012 he sold “House of Cards” to Netflix, but more recently he shepherded the deals for “Poker Face” to Peacock and “Fair Play” to Netflix for $20 million (Sundance 2023’s biggest deal). Tenley also pushed projects to Amazon, like Emerald Fennell’s upcoming film “Saltburn,” the second season of “The Terminal List,...

Kanye West’s Yeezy no longer has an Adidas deal.
The company issued a statement after social media pressure to cut ties with the Grammy-winning rapper amid antisemitic and white supremacist comments. Adidas assured customers and investors that the company “does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech,” calling West’s actions “unacceptable, hateful, and dangerous.”
Adidas has effectively ended production of Yeezy branded products and will now “stop all payments to Ye and his companies. Adidas will stop the Adidas Yeezy business with immediate effect.”
The cost of cutting ties with West marks an estimated loss of 246 million in 2022 alone.
West recently was also dropped by Balenciaga, Vogue, and agency CAA. He recently canceled his Gap deal. Financiers at MRC have since shelved the documentary “Ye” despite the film being finished.

MRC studio executives Modi Wiczyk, Asif Satchu and Scott Tenley announced in a memo Monday: “We cannot support any content that amplifies his platform.”

The question of anti-Semitism is one that has traditionally made Hollywood profoundly uncomfortable as an industry full of Jewish people who would rather not talk about Jews, Jewish people, Israel or – God forbid – anti-Semitism.
Why that’s true requires a Ph.D. in psycho-Semitism (if that were a thing), but Kanye “Ye” West has managed to get shut out of much of Hollywood this past week after a series of anti-Semitic rants that have been embraced by hate groups and spread over social media. He’s lost his agency (CAA), his lawyer at Brown Rudnick and lucrative partnerships with fashion giants such as Balenciaga and others.
Also on Monday, MRC announced the cancellation of an already completed, 2 million documentary called “The Myth of Ye” that it had financed and produced and hoped to sell for as much as 10 million in distribution revenues. Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, has found himself in hot water after giving a series of inflammatory interviews where he spouts anti-Semitic rhetoric. Multiple collaborators have dropped the rapper, citing his remarks as the reason. But one place that Ye will remain is Netflix, via the “Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy” documentaries, TheWrap has confirmed.
The three documentaries, it should be noted, feature West as the subject matter; he wasn’t involved in the creation or promotion of the movies. The documentaries are also free of the kind of hate speech that has embroiled him in his most recent controversy.
Netflix has taken a similarly hands-off approach for things like the Dave Chappelle’s comedy specials which feature anti-trans sentiment and were still allowed to exist as part of the streamer’s vast catalog.

But for many, his recent anti-semitic tirades were a step too far. Fashion house Balenciaga got the ball rolling by severing all ties with the rapper, and now the film industry is following suit.
West was the subject of “Ye,” an upcoming documentary financed by the film and television studio MRC*. While that film has already been completed, the company announced on Monday that the film will not be released due to his anti-semitic comments.
“This morning, after discussion with our filmmakers and distribution partners, we made the decision not to proceed with any distribution for our recently completed documentary about Kanye West,” CEOs Modi Wiczyk and Asif Satchu and COO Scott Tenley wrote in an open letter. “We cannot support any content that amplifies his platform.

CAA has dropped Kanye West as a client, Variety has confirmed.
In addition, a completed documentary about West will be shelved in light of his recent antisemitic comments, MRC studio executives Modi Wiczyk, Asif Satchu and Scott Tenley announced in a memo Monday.
“This morning, after discussion with our filmmakers and distribution partners, we made the decision not to proceed with any distribution for our recently completed documentary about Kanye West. MRC said Monday that it was not moving forward with its recently completed documentary about Kanye West, the news coming amid growing criticism of the rapper/entrepreneur’s recent anti-Semitic statements.
“We cannot support any content that amplifies his platform,” MRC’s co-leaders Modi Wiczyk, Asif Satchu and Scott Tenley said in a statement.
The latest move comes as more in Hollywood have been calling for companies to sever ties with West, who has been increasingly vocal about his views toward Jewish people. Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel, Gersh’s Bob Gersh and UTA’s Jeremy Zimmer are among the most recent big names to speak out over West, who has since been dropped by fashion house Balenciaga. Sportswear company Adidas is facing similar pressure.

MRC has canceled its Kanye “Ye” West documentary, the company said Monday. The decision comes after outcry over the rapper’s anti-Semitic rants, which have already led to him being dropped by talent agent CAA and fashion label Balenciaga and locked out of his Twitter and Instagram accounts.
“I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death con 3 On Jewish People,” the rapper wrote on Oct. 10 in a now-deleted tweet, while also claiming that he “can’t be Anti Semitic because black people are actually Jew also.”

The Golden Globes are returning to NBC in 2023, the network, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Dick Clark Prods. announced on Tuesday. The ceremony will return to the Beverly Hilton in time for its 80th anniversary on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m. Et/ 5 p.m. Pt. The telecast will also be streamed live on Peacock.
According to the network, that date was chosen due to NFL football that Sunday, while the NCAA National Championship Game takes place that Monday — leaving NBC to push the Globes to Tuesday.
NBC declined comment on terms of the deal, including whether the show’s 60 million license fee had been cut. It started out as an exciting business roll-up: The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard would combine forces with Golden Globes telecast producer Dick Clark Productions and the hot producing duo of MRC Entertainment, Modi Wiczyk and Asif Satchu, makers of “House of Cards” and “Ozark.”
The new venture would be owned by one of Hollywood’s most passionate investors, insurance billionaire Todd Boehly, and run by Wiczyk and Satchu — the CEOs of the new company, Valence — with an eye to exiting at a multibillion-dollar valuation.
But now four years later, the whole thing has fallen apart, ending in an acrimonious divorce between Boehly and the two producers, driven by the unsolvable mess of the Golden Globes and financial disappointment with MRC, whose sole TV hit of late has been Netflix’s just-ended drama series “Ozark.”

Adam Stotsky, a two-decade veteran of NBCUniversal executive who last served as global president of the E! Entertainment, has been named president of MRC’s live entertainment and alternative division — a rebranding of the production company formerly known as Dick Clark Productions.

MRC has tapped NBCUniversal alum Adam Stotsky as president of the newly created MRC Live & Alternative, which will absorb the operations of Dick Clark Productions.

The Academy of Country Music Awards is moving from its longtime home at CBS over to Amazon beginning next year.
As TheWrap exclusively reported earlier this year, CBS, which has aired the ACM Awards since 1998, declined to counter the $22 million demand from producer Dick Clark Productions to renew its deal, according to two individuals with knowledge of the negotiations. The insiders said the new price was well above the previous $20 million annual price for a show that has lost almost half of its viewership since 2018.

Amazon Prime Video continues its expansion into live programming. After taking exclusive rights to NFL’s Thursday Night Football in a precedent-setting digital deal, the streamer has made a deal for the 57th Academy of Country Music Awards. The 2022 telecast, produced by MRC’s dick clark productions, marks the first time a major awards show live-streamed exclusively on an SVOD platform. (The Daytime Emmys have been only available online a couple of times.)
Launched in 1966, the Academy of Country Music Awards has aired exclusively on broadcast — on ABC (1972-78), NBC (1979-97) and, most recently on CBS (1998-2021).
The three-hour 2021 telecast, hosted by Keith Urban and Mickey Guyton, drew a 0.8 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 6.1 million (Live+Same Day) in April, marking the lowest-rated and least watched ACM Awards to date but still topping all of broadcast in the demo and drew larger audience than its network competitors combined.

Collins has been on quite the roll recently. In the first half of 2021, he produced the Weeknd’s Super Bowl halftime show, was a co-executive producer of the Grammys, and co-produced the Oscars — as close to a triple crown as you can get in winter and spring TV entertainment events. These followed his production of the 2020 BET Awards, which was regarded by many as the best of the reinvented pandemic-era television awards show broadcasts.

Jesse Collins Entertainment is also being named as a producer of the AMAs, alongside Dick Clark Productions.

The CMT Music Awards will no longer air on the channel they’re named after. ViacomCBS announced Monday that next year’s show will air exclusively on CBS.
A date for the show has not been set. As the name suggests, the awards show has previously aired on ViacomCBS’ country music cable channel CMT.
For the 2022 event, CMT will kick off the company’s first-ever Country Music Week by hosting week-long special programming and events capped by exclusive director’s cut airings of the Awards later on CMT and various ViacomCBS platforms.
The CMT news comes as CBS is negotiating with Dick Clark Productions to renew its contract to keep the Academy of Country Music Awards, which are set for next April from Las Vegas. As TheWrap reported, CBS has balked at a staggering demand of $22 million a year.

When Elise Henderson joined MRC as President of Television in April 2019, the company had one series on the air, Netflix’s Ozark, was about to start production on HBO limited series The Outsider and had just finished a pilot for Hulu’s The Great.
Two years — and a pandemic — later, MRC Television has eight series, the most the indie studio has had at the same time: Ozark, The Great as well as the upcoming The Terminal List at Amazon Prime Video, starring Chris Pratt; The Shrink Next Door (limited series), headlined by Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd, Shining Girls, starring Elisabeth Moss, and Hello Tomorrow!, headlined by Billy Crudup, all at Apple TV+; as well as Rian Johnson’s Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne; and Ted, a prequel to the 2012 movie, with Seth MacFarlane, at Peacock. CBS has balked at a staggering demand of $22 million a year to license the 2022 Academy of Country Music Awards, leaving show producer Dick Clark Productions scrambling to negotiate a new deal amid declining ratings and internal executive turmoil, TheWrap has learned. CBS, which has aired the ACM Awards since 1998, declined to counter the $22 million demand to renew its deal, according to two individuals with knowledge of the negotiations. The insiders said the new price was well above the previous $20 million annual price for a show that has lost almost half of its viewership since 2018. A rep for CBS declined to comment, while Dcp and parent company MRC would not confirm the licensing fee. As a result of CBS’ response, Dick Clark Productions and MRC co-CEOs Modi Wiczyk and Asif Satchu are negotiating with NBC as part of a package deal that would renegotiate the network’s $60 million-a-year Golden Globes contact...

Amy Thurlow is leaving as president of Dick Clark Productions at the end of June, two months after an exclusive investigation by TheWrap into her workplace behavior that led to the departure of five senior executives earlier this year.
Thurlow’s exit ends a rocky 19-month tenure as Dcp president that was marked by numerous complaints about her bruising and “toxic” management style. One insider described Thurlow as someone who was “very, very challenging” to work for, calling out a management style “that could be classified as toxic.”
TheWrap also reported that Thurlow was the subject of complaints about her drinking, abusive behavior and inappropriate language in a previous executive role as CFO of TV Guide Network from 2011 to 2014.
Thurlow joined Dcp in 2014 and was elevated to president in November 2019. Her departure also comes as Dcp is without a home for the 2022 Golden Globes, which were effectively canceled this spring...

Amy Thurlow is leaving dick clark productions after seven years, the last one as president. Modi Wiczyk and Asif Satchu, co-CEOs of Dcp parent MRC, just announced Thurlow’a departure internally, and she also shared the news with her staff. (You can read the two notes below.)
Thurlow is expected to take some time off this summer as she contemplates her next steps. A search is underway for her replacement.
Previously dcp’s COO and CFO, Thurlow was promoted to president in November 2019 and assumed the post in Q2 of 2020 amid the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
Dcp was hit particularly hard by Covid as the company’s core business is televised live entertainment, one of the areas most impacted by the pandemic. Spring 2020 live events were postponed across the board, and some summer awards shows switched to pre-taped format. When live specials started to come back in the fall,...
