ABC Studios has signed Sarah Gertrude Shapiro to a two year overall deal, Variety has learned exclusively.
Shapiro was an executive producer and co-creator of the critically-acclaimed hit Lifetime drama series “UnREAL,” for which she received an Emmy, Peabody Award, and AFI award nomination.

Its first three seasons aired on Lifetime with the fourth and final season airing on Hulu earlier this year.
Under the deal, Shapiro will develop projects across all platforms both for ABC Signature Studios and ABC Studios. She was previously under an overall deal at A+E Studio, which produced “UnREAL.”
Known for her storylines that empower women, Shapiro also recently completed writing a screenplay for Amazon and will make her feature directorial debut on the film.

Hulu has finally confirmed that Lifetime drama “UnReal” is moving to the streaming service for its fourth season. And here’s a twist: It’s debuting on Hulu today. And here’s another twist: This is, indeed, the series’ final season.
It’s a surprise move befitting “Everlasting,” the dating competition show-within-a-show that is the centerpiece of “UnReal.” Word of a deal between Hulu and series producer A+E Studios first leaked in May, but was never formally announced until today’s final reveal.
As part of the deal, “UnReal” will now be branded as a Hulu Original Series. Hulu already carries the off-net runs of the first three seasons of “UnReal,” which means the entire library — including all eight episodes of Season 4 — will be available on the service as of today.

Parity was the hot topic on everyone’s mind during the drama panel discussion for Variety’s “A Night in the Writers’ Room.”
Before the conversation between seven female and six male writers began, Variety’s executive editor of TV, Debra Birnbaum, brought out a stuffed elephant toy to address the “elephant in the room” of changing the lineup to the night’s panelists.

Drama series “UnReal” is set to move from Lifetime to Hulu for its fourth and what will likely be its final season.
The streaming service and A+E Studios are close to a deal, sources tell Variety, that would see the fourth season, which has already been shot, air in its initial window on Hulu. The agreement would see Hulu pay an additional fee on top of it was already set to pay for subscription video on-demand rights for the season.
Hulu is, through a previous agreement with producer A+E Studios, the exclusive Svod home for the series, with seasons 1-3 moving to the service following their initial broadcasts on cable channel Lifetime.
Sources tell Variety that the series has been a strong performer for Hulu, and that it made sense for the service to pick up first-window rights when approached with them by Lifetime corporate sibling A+E Studios.

The fourth and likely final season of Lifetime’s UnReal is moving to Hulu.
Lifetime sold the fourth season of the drama from Sarah Gertrude Shapiro and Marti Noxon to Hulu for first run, Deadline has confirmed. A+E Studios made money on the deal with Hulu and there are no expectations for Lifetime to order another season. That could change however, if the show does well on Hulu, it could be renewed, according to those familiar with the deal. Hulu is already the Svod home for the drama series.
The critically praised UnReal does not do well in linear, but it’s a popular show for binging and gets a bump in digital viewing, which is a perfect fit for Hulu. Season 3, which wrapped in April on Lifetime, has yet to air on Hulu.

We knew we were in for a ride when UnREAL, the scripted show created by a former producer from The Bachelor, first hit our screens back in 2015. The show promised to give viewers a peek behind the scenes of a fictional show called Everlasting that was clearly little more than a stand-in for the ABC reality competition. Not only that, it hinted that this was how The Bachelor really worked, all backed up by Sarah Gertrude Shapiro's real experiences, which she detailed in a profile with The New Yorker. The series is, of course, "one hundred percent fiction," but it also has "the truth of what it was like on The Bachelor is baked in." Former Bachelor contestant Olivia Caridi called the show "scary accurate", explaining, "Obviously there's a little hyperbole involved in UnREAL. [But] there’s a reason Chris Harrison and The Bachelor are bothered by it... It was...

That’s extended, on a meta level, to how the show operates during production: While on other shows, women struggle to find acceptance, showrunner Stacy Rukeyser and co-creator Sarah Gertrude Shapiro feel that they’ve made sure that the sort of hazing and back-talking that they might experience on other sets is not an issue for them.
“Everyone on set knows that there are female creators, there is a female showrunner, there is a female line producer, there are female directors,” Rukeyser said. “You don’t try that stuff around us. Working with 200 people, stuff is going to come up, but we handle it immediately...

Let’s get this out of the way: “UnREAL” Season 3 still lacks the scintillating spark that made the show’s debut must-see TV, but it has also made marked, knowing improvements after a sophomore run that crashed and burned (so to speak). The first five episodes are so annoying uneven, it’s hard to settle on a declarative reaction. On the one hand, using a suitress (rather than a suitor) to wisely keep the focus on women pays off in better arcs for Quinn (Constance Zimmer) and Rachel (Shiri Appleby) — so yay, “UnREAL” is good again! But on the other, the suitress herself (played by the wonderful Caitlin Fitzgerald) is poorly utilized, and just when the show starts rolling, it inexplicably and maddeningly derails itself — so boo, “UnREAL” is still a mess.

The craftiest women in fictional reality television may have finally met their match on “UnREAL.” The third season of Lifetime’s most addictively meta-theatrical drama will feature a female “suitress” named Serena, played by cast addition Caitlin FitzGerald (“Masters of Sex”). FitzGerald’s character poses new challenges for power players Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby) and Quinn King (Constance Zimmer), who battled for control of the fictional dating show “Everlasting” during the first two seasons. In the trailer, Serena has ideas of her own about how to run the ship, and Rachel and Quinn must step up their game if they want to stay in power. If the slow takes of the many male contestants slowly disrobing are any indication, the queen bees of “Everlasting” will also struggle to keep things strictly professional.

“UnREAL” is back with its first female suitor and no shortage of drama — including (sob!) a defaced man bun. The Lifetime series returns with its third season premiere on Feb. 26, the channel announced Tuesday. The show also released the season’s first trailer, introducing viewers to new “Everlasting” lead Serena (Caitlin FitzGerald). “She’s smart — we can’t handle her the same way,” Rachel (Shiri Appleby) warns Quinn (Constance Zimmer) in the promo. My (abs) is there a lot (abs) of male shirtlessness (abs) in this Season 3 trailer for UnREAL (abs) or what (abs abs abs)?
Makes sense, seeing as how the new episodes will focus on the race to woo Everlasting‘s first female suitor suitress — and from the look of the new footage, it seems like Caitlin Fitzgerald’s Serena is as sharp (and possibly calculating) as she is stunning.

A grown man wears a penguin onesie. An gimmicky moron shrieks his catchphrase (which, if you happen to forget it, is emblazoned on his T-shirt). A puppet expresses his existential crisis in French, with subtitles. For those who loved the first installment, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two men investigating one crime over the course of years, the news might be exciting — but those who watched the second season might understandably be a little wary of the news.
That’s because “True Detective” Season 2 was further confirmation of a fact that savvy television viewers are more than aware of: Coming up with one good season of television does not make you a world-class showrunner.
This is especially true if one of the primary reasons for your show’s success — such as a key collaborator like Cary Fukunaga — departs.

This is the great TV that happens when women show up. Don’t take it for granted.

UnREAL unveiled its third showrunner in as many seasons on Wednesday. Twentieth Century Fox Film and the American Film Institute have announced today that they’ve entered a new partnership to help increase the number of female directors working on major studio films. The initiative will provide alumnae of the AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women (Dww), the Institute’s female filmmaker training program, the opportunity to direct short films based on the Studio’s film franchises. With access to the Studio’s resources and intellectual property, the filmmakers will be invited to contribute to building on to the franchises’ narrative worlds, and in turn, create sample work in genres where female directors are underrepresented.

Discussing the representation of women in Hollywood is never, you know, a fun topic, especially when it comes to below-the-line departments. In 2016, there are still glaring examples of a lack of progress for women.
While an improvement over years past, here’s just a quick sampling of accomplishments women were not recognized for: narration, music composition, writing in many categories, stunt coordination… There are plenty of categories, as well, where only one or two women were nominated, often with a male partner — such as Writing for a Comedy, where the sole female nominee is Sharon Horgan alongside Rob Delaney for “Catastrophe.”
But rather than dwell on that, let’s acknowledge some of the accomplished nominees who have a chance to be recognized for their achievements this year. Because regardless of gender, they’re awesome.
