Fresh off conquering the rock world with her all-star new album, Dolly Parton returned to her Tennessee roots Saturday with a rendition of “Rocky Top” at the University of Tennessee’s football game.
The Felice and Boudleaux Bryant-penned classic — which doubles as both an official Tennessee state song and the Volunteers’ fight song — has long been a part of Parton’s live repertoire, and on Saturday, for the University of Tennessee’s big matchup against Number One-ranked Georgia, she got the Neyland Stadium crowd going with “Rocky Top.”

Sinéad O’Connor was as world-renowned for fervid rock & roll and adventurous pop as she was for her defiant stance on often-controversial issues. But the Irish-born musician also recorded a handful of modern country-music covers — and even performed a duet with a country legend.
O’Connor, whose death at age 56 was announced Wednesday, was already a galvanizing figure in popular music when she released her third album, Am I Not Your Girl, in the fall of 1992. A collection of lushly orchestrated jazz and pre-rock pop covers, the LP also included O...

We’re exactly one month away from the mind-bending release of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Marvel Studios’ latest superhero romp. And in order to keep the hype train going, a new spot has been released, designed to get your blood pumping.
The minute-long spot opens with the Everly Brothers’ version of “All I Have to Do Is Dream” (written by Boudleaux Bryant back in 1958), except it’s fuzzy and distorted. We see Doctor Strange standing in front of a very haunted-looking house. We see more images destined to inspire countless YouTube explainers: Strange with some kind of futuristic shackles around his wrists; Christine (Rachel McAdams) in a wedding dress; Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) reconnecting with her children from “WandaVision.”
We then get some familiar stuff from earlier marketing materials – a giant monster throwing a bus at Strange (and Strange slicing it in half with a spell), plus a...

In mid-July, Ashley Monroe shared a frightening revelation with her fans: the singer-songwriter was diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer. She’s since started treatment, but the course of care has left her immune system compromised. With the Covid-19 pandemic still raging, Monroe has been extra careful about any time out in public.
“I literally am just at home every day,” she tells Rolling Stone.
The cancer diagnosis was an unexpected shock for Monroe, who released her fourth studio album Rosegold in April. She had been feeling fine,...

Bob Dylan fans woke up this morning to the stunning news that the songwriter had released a 17-minute epic titled “Murder Most Foul.” “Greetings to my fans and followers, with gratitude for all your support and loyalty over the years,” Dylan wrote. “This is an unreleased song we recorded a while back that you might find interesting. Stay safe, stay observant, and may God be with you.”
It’s his first original song since 2012’s Tempest, though he has released three albums of cover songs associated with Frank Sinatra since then.

The Cma Awards may get the lion’s share of the attention in country music this week, thanks mainly to its three hours in primetime on ABC, but Tuesday night’s Bmi Awards exude a certain kind of unmatchable cool.
Only in the confines of Bmi’s Nashville parking garage — where tables, a stage, and multiple bars are set up on the hard concrete — would you see the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir, in a black poncho and hat, and Margo Price in a rhinestone suit singing Dwight Yoakam’s “Fast as...

Fifty-three years ago today, on March 1st, 1966, construction began on the barn-shaped structure that would for several decades house the original Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on Music Row. Now located in downtown Nashville, the museum anchors a booming tourist industry and, with more than 350,000 square feet, tells the ongoing story of country music through exhibits featuring the genre’s stars past and present. That tradition continues in 2019 with the museum’s just-announced schedule, which will shine a spotlight on recent Grammy winner Kacey Musgraves, hit duo Brooks & Dunn,...

Half of the brilliant duo that transformed 1950s pop music
With his older brother Don, Phil Everly, who has died of pulmonary disease aged 74, formed one of pop music's greatest vocal partnerships. If it was Elvis Presley who became the most spectacular icon of 1950s rock'n'roll, the Everly Brothers created a musical legacy which was every bit as influential. Their unique vocal harmonies, coupled with ingenious guitar arrangements and timeless material, had a revolutionary impact on the Beatles, the Hollies, Simon & Garfunkel, the Beach Boys, the Byrds and Crosby Stills & Nash.
The Everly Brothers' breakthrough hit was Bye Bye Love (1957), still regarded as one of their most impressive creations. Up to that point, Don and Phil had been chipping away at the country music scene in Nashville, Tennessee, with limited success. Bye Bye Love topped the country charts, but more significantly soared to No 2 on the pop charts, just...
