In the wake of Jade Castro’s arrest last week, the family of the Filipino filmmaker has released a statement demanding a “transparent and fair investigation” and launched a fundraiser to cover mounting legal costs.
The statement, which Castro’s family signed alongside those of Noel Mariano, Ernesto Orcine and Dominic Ramos, who were also detained without warrant, was posted on the “Free Jade Castro” page on Facebook. Many Filipino filmmakers and industry professionals have shared it on social media.
Castro, Mariano, Orcine and Ramos are accused of arson after a modern jeepney (a minibus-like utility vehicle) was set on fire; they were arrested in Mulanay, Quezon in the Philippines. However, TV station Abs-cbn and two local officials have placed the group more than an hour away from the scene of the crime at the time it took place, according to local news site Rappler.

The Directors Guild of the Philippines (Dgpi) has called for the “immediate release” of filmmaker Jade Castro after he was arrested by police last week.
Castro and three of his friends were arrested on suspicion of arson in Mulanay, Quezon in the Philippines on Tuesday (February 1).
He is known for directing indie arthouse films such as comedy horror Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington (aka Remington and the Curse of the Zombadings) and TV series such as Beki Boxer and Lss (Last Song Syndrome). He is a producer on Some Nights I Feel Like Walking, which is in post and set for the festival circuit this year.
Castro tweeted about the situation and declared his innocence, stated he was on vacation and that the crime had occurred in Catanauan, which is about 25km away from Mulanay. He later shared that the arrest was warrantless and it appears he is still being held.

Implementing mainstream Hollywood aesthetics in a Filipino setting can be a tricky business, but Jade Castro seems to know what he is doing in “Lss”, by creating a true feel-good movie that uses music as its base in the ideal way.
“Lss (Last Song Syndrome)” is screening at Osaka Asian Film Festival
The story revolves around two characters, Zach and Sarah. Zach works for a software company, is in love with his flat mate, who ignores his feelings however and jumps from one relationship to the other (including girls) and spends way too much time with his hip and progressive mother, with the two sharing a very significant bond since Zach’s father abandoned them years ago. Zach, however, longs to reunite with his father, despite his mother’s denial to do so.

This the third year that the Slovak Queer Film Festival introduces a sidebar section focusing on Far East cinemas Queer Asia. In its 13th edition, the festival brings a retrospective dedicated to the Philippines.
It is the diversity of the stories that caught the attention of the festival. Moreover, the Philippine Lgbtq+ films stretch across the spectrum from arthouse to mainstream. This also applies to the 3rd Queer Asia section. Consisting of five features, it presents a sample from the last decennial.
Among them, “Boy” (2009) by Auraeus Solito is the oldest. A macho dancer film in its best, it plays out a story of a search for joy and fulfillment in a relationship with a hired erotic dancer. Subtle in its execution, strong in its character, “Boy” unashamedly exposes the male body to the gaze. “Those Long Haired Nights” (2017) by Gerardo Calagui heads out from the night clubs and interiors of homes.

The opening scenes of Jade Castro's Remington and the Curse of the Zombadings follow a preschooler as he walks around his small Philippine hometown, childishly mocking gay men until one reacts in fury, cursing him to turn gay when he's grown. (Imagine Steven King's Thinner if the old woman had croaked out, "Fabulous!") Cut to Remington (Martin Escudero), fully grown, falling for a local girl (improbably named Hannah Montano) while at night a series of ghostly encounters transform him into a walking—well, sashaying—gay stereotype. (A clever touch: After a ghost ties a knot in Remington's tongue, the film, largely in Tagalog, starts using a second set of subtitles to indicate Baklese, a local gay dialect.) Meanwhile, someone is ...

The theme for this year’s B-Movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival, held in the city of Breda in the Netherlands, is “Apocalypse.” So get ready to watch the world end dozens of different ways on Sept. 5-9 at various venues around the city.
The fun kicks off on the 5th with the German movie Hell by director Tim Fehlbaum. If you didn’t know, “hell” means “bright” in German and, given that title, this flick is set appropriately in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has decimated the planet and surviving tribes battle for water and food.
Other post-apocalyptic visions include Milan Konjevic’s Zone of the Dead starring legendary zombie killer Ken Foree; Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Bazillian underground hit Beyond the Grave about a world where magic and madness rule the world; and Rob van Eyck’s bizarrely twisted Afterman and Afterman 2.

In the Philippines even zombies exhibit sexual preferences. And why not? It's about time that the rainbow flag got a little blood on it! Read on for your first word on Remington and the Curse of the Zombadings, which incidentally is also the title of our favorite Hall & Oates song.
According to THR, German sales outfit Raspberry & Cream has picked up the Asian horror title Remington and the Curse of the Zombadings, a gay zombie film from the Philippines. Raspberry & Cream will handle worldwide sales on the title, a low-brow comedy about the homophobic Remington, who is cast under a spell and becomes gay himself.
The film has proved a box office hit on its home turf, earning close to $1 million with 250,000 admissions, making it one of the most successful indie features ever in the Philippines. Director Jade Castro also produced Remington through the Manila-based writer/producer collectives ufo Pictures and Orgin8 Media.

German company Raspberry & Cream have picked up the Filipino low-brow comedy/horror feature "Remington And The Curse of the Zombadings" says The Hollywood Reporter.
The Jade Castro-directed zombie film follows a homophobic macho young man named Remington (Martin Escudero) who, as a child, insulted a drag queen in a graveyard. As a result he falls under a spell that slowly but surely turns him gay and pushing him into a love triangle with his best friend and the girl-next-door.
Meanwhile his cop mother is investigating why gay men across town are turning up dead. The project is one of the most successful indie features ever in the Philippines where it was released last year.

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

From the Philippines, the country responsible for bat-shit crazy classics like 1983’s “The Killing of Satan”, comes a new zombie comedy from director Jade Castro, entitled “Zombadings”. Set to come out sometime in 2011, there is a new trailer for “Zombadings” for your consumption. Now I don’t speak Tagolog, so I’m not 100% clear on what’s going on here, but there are some unexplained deaths, awkward teens up to usual teenage shenanigans (like getting butterfly tattoos and probably trying to get laid), a creepy mystic, and, of course, all manner of flesh-crazed, undead monsters roaming about. In my book, that adds up to a pretty good time at the movies. Here is what the film’s official Facebook page has to say about the plot: A coming of age story. A coming together of friends and family story. A coming of Zombadings story. Coming sooner. Here is the trailer via Twitch.

With the local studios firmly entrenched in formula driven rom-coms and other stock fare the real future of Filipino cinema lies with the indies. And, happily, the indie scene is strong with a new generation of film makers making waves on the arthouse festival circuit while others experiment with more commercial stories.
One of those more commercially minded efforts to look for in 2011 is Jade Castro's zombie comedy Zombadings.
While I'm not a specialist in this area I believe this may be the first zombie movie to come out of The Philippines and it looks like Castro - an award winning film maker - is doing it right. The balance definitely tips a little more to the comedy side of the spectrum but the prosthetic effects are well done and the performances all seem pretty solid. Check the trailer below.

Luis Suarez's RPG Metanoia is the first Filipino-made 3D and CG-animated feature length film. Sadly, it seems that the distinction has overshadowed the film, which, even without the label that points out its historic significance, is quite a solid endeavor and must be seen, instead of read about, to be really enjoyed.
The film opens with a lengthy action sequence where Zero, a heroic kid who is quite adept with the yoyo as a weapon, makes his way through a horde of robots and defeats a three-headed monstrosity who looks like a cross between a hydra and a jack-in-the-box, revealing a prize, a mysterious mask that is supposed to give its wearer god-like powers. Cathy Garcia-Molina's My Amnesia Girl has all the trappings of detestable formula. Like all of the romantic comedies that preceded it, the ones that have given Star Cinema the ill-repute of dumbing down its followers with rehashes of the same story, by the film seems to be relying solely on kitsch, on star power, on everything artificial. There is no denying the film's use of kitsch. In fact, the film is quite unabashed with it, with characters strangely enveloped by a culture of love reigning supreme over everything else. It is adamantly unpretentious, relishing on the obvious fact that it has in its service of fun an abundance of cute and hip. It does not aspire anything more than to recharge its audience's thirst for spritely romance, the one that is less attached to reality, the one that mines on the mysteries of fate to add magic to it.
