The Québec film industry is often lauded for the exuberant creativity and artistic merit of many films it produces each and every year. Every so often though, a little bit more money is invested in a project, one that, much like its Hollywood counterparts, hopes achieve success beyond critical acclaim. Cast some familiar stars, write a reasonably easy script for the masses to understand and appreciate, and hopefully the endeavour shall reap box office benefits in addition to the much desired warm public and critical reception. The Rocket (2005) was one such film, as were the summer hits Bond Cop, Bad Cop (2006) and De Père en flic (Father and Guns, 2009). The summer of 2012 brings back an important title that should be very familiar to Québec television fans: Omertà, which was a Sopranos-like cop and mobsters drama which aired from 1996 to 1999. Canadian comedian André Sauvé will adapt into a film a famous monologue he did in a sketch: the grocery store (l'épicerie). The film will fittingly be called L'épicerie.
This will be the second film in which André Sauvé plays after Filière 13. Instead of being in a supporting role like in Filière 13, Sauvé will be the lead actor.
Christal Film Productions, a production company, announced yesterday that André Sauvé will write the film's script along with Claude Lalonde (Filière 13). For the moment, no director is attached to the film.
The film is about a man who goes to the grocery store. Once there, he starts to panick because of what's offered to him on the shelves.
In the next months, the producers of the film will seek subsidies from Telefilm Canada and the Sodec, respectively a federal and a Quebecker cinematographic funding agency. The producers expect L'épicerie's budget to be at $6 M.

In production since May 24 in Montreal, Luc Dionne's film, Le projet Omertà, will wrap up on production on July 18. Moreover, the film will be released in Quebec in summer 2012.
The film, which is based on a TV series showrunned by Luc Dionne himself, will be centred on the character of Pierre Gauthier (Michel Côté), an federal agent who's specialized on organized crime.
He's now the head of Pulsar International, a high-level private security agency. One day, he's called by Gilbert Tanguay (Michel Dumont), his former boss, to investigate on a conspiracy. Tanguay also recruits Sophie (Rachelle Lefevre), a former agent of the Canadian secret service, so that she infiltrates the Montrealer underworld.
Sophie has to earn the trust of Steve Cohen (Stéphane Rousseau) and Steve Bélanger (Patrick Huard), two known associates of the Italian mafia of Montreal. Cohen and Bélanger wants to steal the gold supply of all the major North American banks.

- Born from a festival that had everything to do with laughs and nothing to do with cinema, now in their 12th edition, the Just For Laughs Film Fest have pretty much developed their identity, attracted name films and talent. This year's fest will begin with a Bang! or I should say a Bong! with David Gordon Green and the Apatow team (Seth Rogen, co-writer Evan Goldberg, co-star Danny McBride) coming down with one of the rare advance premieres of Pineapple Express and a Q&A. Other special guests and accompanying films include: Father and son team of the Reitmans (Ivan and Jason for those coming out of a coma) presenting a Master Class on filmmaking on July 18. Sundance hit Baghead from Jay & Mark Duplass gets a screening on July 14th and the 20th studio fair with Rainn Wilson (The Office) starring in The Rocker. The Deal – a film adapted

Miramax Films turned out to be a step ahead of the game when it acquired U.S. distribution rights to The Barbarian Invasions, one of the films In Competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The French-language picture went on to win the screenplay award for writer-director Denys Arcand and the best actress prize for Marie-Josee Croze, who stars as a young junkie. Also starring in the tale of a man who spends his last days making peace with his life are Remy Girard, Stephane Rousseau and Louise Portal. "Denys Arcand is a great filmmaker whose work stood out high above the rest of the films at this year's Cannes Film Festival," Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said. "The film is full of humanity and shows a fascinating perspective on friendship and family." Produced by Denise Robert and Daniel Louis from Cinemaginaire, Invasions was acquired from Flach Pyramide International. "We are pleased to have been able to acquire such a wonderful film, which the entire acquisitions team loved, from the renowned company FPI," said Agnes Mentre, executive vp acquisitions and co-productions at Miramax. "It is so rare to find a movie that balances emotion and comedy and also contains profound statements about the important subjects of our lives."...
