A world expert on William Shakespeare has compared Taylor Swift to some of history’s greatest writers – including the Bard himself – and said she is a “real poet”.
Scholar Sir Jonathan Bate, a former Shakespeare professor at Warwick University, said he believed the popstar is more than “just high-class showbiz” and has a “literary sensibility” that was apparent from her debut album.
In a piece for The Sunday Times Magazine titled Why Taylor Swift is a literary giant, he wrote that he had “one of the best nights of [his] life” at one of Swift’s concerts.
“Listening to her lyrics, which most of the rapturous (mainly female) audience seemed to know by heart, I came away with confirmation of a thought I first had 15 years ago: this isn’t just high-class showbiz, Taylor Swift is a real poet,” he said.

I’ll admit it, I was a little nervous about speaking with Brent Spiner during a recent press Q&A conference call with him and Warehouse 13 showrunner Jack Kenny. I’d spoken with Jack Kenny before and he’s always been a treat, but Brent Spiner? Who knew he would be such a treat? He and Kenny had a terrific rapport and they were clearly enjoying the banter. They even had a way of making each caller feel like part of the cool kids’ group.
There is one paragraph of spoilers, but you’ll see a warning; otherwise, spoilerphobes have no reason to worry. Make sure to read to the end, as there’s a tantalizing tidbit they tossed in at the very end…
The call was in support of Spiner’s guest arc in the new season of Warehouse 13, so after reporting the terrific ratings for the season premiere,...

Black actors belong in British costume drama. After all, we've been around for a lot longer than 1948
I've not read Wuthering Heights and for some reason, possibly the terrible sadness of its storyline, I've tried to avoid filmed versions of it too. But Andrea Arnold's retelling of Emily Bronte's story has me intrigued. Casting a black Heathcliff seems to have divided critics down the middle: some say it is an accurate and justifiable reading of the story of the "dark outsider"; others dismiss it as a bit of modern, multicultural nonsense.
Indeed, one critic wrote that far from Arnold's description of the actor James Howson as a "young Jimi Hendrix", they found him more like "a young Rio Ferdinand". A British film director decides to cast the best actor she can find regardless of colour, and the critic chooses to mock her choice by comparing the artist to...

Chicago – Instead of relying of high-tech gadgetry and big-budget Hollywood CGI, Guy Ritchie’s gritty “Sherlock Holmes” does what major films often don’t: delivers big-payoff action sequences merely utilizing the body and mind.
While that concept is consistent with the technology present in a dreary 1890s London during Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s time (Sherlock Holmes is his most legendary literary character), that doesn’t mean a big-ticket film wouldn’t be tantalized into injecting unauthentic visual ridiculousness. Thankfully, Guy Ritchie resists.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Instead, Robert Downey Jr. treats us with a glimpse into Sherlock Holmes’ brilliant mind as he deconstructs and debilitates his enemies through the acute understanding of the human body, its weaknesses and how it can most effectively be broken.
These well-choreographed, no-weapon sequences redefine the traditional fight scene with masterful execution, original style and memorable cinematic achievement. Aside from the brute force of his fist, Holmes...
