Chicago – Jessica Lange’s long career as actor is on the record … from “King Kong” to “American Horror Story.” But her new book “Dérive” focuses on the photo artist in her, and she discussed it at the the 2022 Chicago Humanities Festival (Chf) on November 12th. Photographer Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com was there to get the Exclusive Portrait.
When the beginning of the pandemic locked down New York City, Jessica Lange grabbed her camera and went outside. In “Dérive,” Lange shares the photographs she took in those early days and what inspires her artistic practices. The moderator at the Chf event was Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune.

Rufus Wainwright released the video for the charming, folksy “You Ain’t Big,” the latest single off his upcoming album Unfollow the Rules, slated for July 10th.
The clip opens in the style of an old film, complete with a scene in an editorial office as a man discusses how he overcame his anger: “How would you feel if you were me?” he says. “You needed to get back to the grassroots, get a little closer to people.”
The video features vintage postcards of heartland cities in the United States.

Reading a Bonnaroo lineup is like slowly strolling through and all the way down the looking glass — the familiar big-name headliners giving way to a mix of special performances and a broad array of up-and-comers from across the globe and musical spectrum.
The 2020 lineup is no different: Lizzo, Tame Impala, Tool, Miley Cyrus, Bassnectar, Lana Del Rey, Vampire Weekend, DaBaby and Young Thug are among the artists who got top billing this year, while the biggest “surprise” headliner award may go to Oysterhead, the jam supergroup of Trey Anastasio, Les Claypool and Stewart Copeland,...

What stands out about Theodore Shapiro’s score for “Bombshell” is that the music isn’t frantic despite being set in a fast-paced environment — Roger Ailes’ newsroom at Fox News. Instead, the score straddles two worlds: that of Ailes and that of the women who worked for him.
“[Director] Jay [Roach] and I talked about finding Roger’s voice in the music. He saw himself as a tough-minded realist — the only one brave enough to speak the truth about how the world really worked. We wanted to find a musical language that reflected Roger’s view [of himself],” Shapiro explains. “That music is very dry, hard and percussive. There are closed mic, deep percussion and piano. There are strings, but they are very dry and in-your-face. There are harsh string plucks.”
The film is also about women telling their story, Shapiro says. It’s about Megyn Kelly (an unrecognizable Charlize Theron) and Gretchen Carlson...

The Haden Triplets – siblings Petra, Rachel, and Tanya – offer another sneak peek of their forthcoming LP, The Family Songbook, with the heavy-hearted “Every Time I Try,” accompanied by a video that pays tribute to syndicated country-music television programs that were popular weekend viewing from the Fifties to the early Eighties. The clip also features an amusing cameo from actor Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) as the “special guest star” of The Haden Triplets Show, a throwback to music-oriented series such as The Porter Wagoner Show and the Springfield, Missouri-based Ozark Jubilee,...

In 2014, the Haden Triplets – Petra, Rachel, and Tanya – released their eponymous debut album on Jack White’s Third Man Records label. A sterling collection of vintage country songs, the LP was distinguished by the siblings’ chill-inducing harmonies. The daughters of jazz bass legend Charlie Haden (who died in July of that year) pay homage to their father’s exceptional music history, first as a singing (and yodeling) 2-year-old member of his family’s country-music act and his later years as one of the most influential jazz instrumentalists from the Fifties...

Morrissey appeared on The Tonight Show to perform his recent cover of Jobriath’s 1973 glam-rock tune “Morning Starship.” The suit-clad singer was joined by a live band as he took on the anthemic song with his classic croon, bringing in more of an jangly electric vibe than the acoustic-led original.
The musician’s new album, California Sun, is a collection of Sixties and Seventies protest covers, including tracks by Joni Mitchell, Dionne Warwick and Bob Dylan. The album, Morrissey’s follow up to his 2017 album Low In High School, drops...

Morrissey recruited Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and the Regrettes’ Lydia Night for his soulful cover of the 5th Dimension’s “Wedding Bell Blues,” the first official single from the singer’s upcoming Sixties/Seventies covers LP, California Son.
The guest duo add breezy backing vocals throughout the Laura Nyro-penned track, while Morrissey croons marital daydreams over jaunty piano, glassy electric guitar chords and the faint flutter of a theremin. “I look at you and see the passion eyes of May/Oh, but am I ever gonna see my wedding day?...

Morrissey and Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste have teamed for a rendition of Jobriath’s “Morning Starship.” The song appears on Morrissey’s covers album, California Son, which features his takes on Sixties and Seventies tracks. The album is the follow-up to 2017’s Low in High School.
Their cover of “Morning Starship,” stays fairly faithful to the glam rocker’s 1973 original, with added ethereal harmonized touches where Morrissey and Droste’s voices pleasingly intermingle, some dramatic vocal flourishes and a bit of a psychedelic sway that buoy Morrissey’s hallmark baritone.

Morrissey unveiled a fittingly dramatic rendition of Roy Orbison’s 1964 track, “It’s Over.” The song will appear on the musician’s upcoming covers album, California Son, out May 24th.
Morrissey’s arrangement is fairly faithful to the original, blending orchestral elements with marching drums and dreamy guitars, though he still injects the track with his own distinct style of grandeur while guest singer LP lends the track an operatic edge. Most striking is Morrissey’s vocal performance, his baritone quivering in that quintessential Orbison way as he sings, “But oh what will you do,...

First, some more names. Among the hearties who are shivering timbers on Son of Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys: Tom Waits with Keith Richards, Michael Stipe with Courtney Love, Nick Cave, Broken Social Scene, Marianne Faithful with the McGarrigle sisters, Sissy Bounce with Akron/Family, Beth Orton, Macy Gray and Sean Lennon.
The two-disc set, due next year, is the sequel to a compilation from 2006. There too, Pirates producer Hal Willner manned the tiller.

Mariah Carey performs "I'll Be There"
Michael Jackson was the consummate entertainer; a groundbreaking dancer and showman, and that's saying nothing about his songbook, which ranks right up there with the tunes of Elvis and the Beatles (which he also once owned). From his early days with the Jackson 5 to his transcendent solo career, Jackson worked with the best in the business — Quincy Jones, Berry Gordy, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Teddy Riley, Glen Ballard, Rod Temperton, to name just a few — and the end result was a veritable treasure trove of totally classic tunes.
Over the course of his career, Jackson scored 13 #1 singles — more than any other male artist of the past 50 years. His musical output was so great that a whole new generation of artists...

It'd be easy to dismiss an album that features the following credit as a gimmick: "All tracks written and produced by Dave Aju using only his mouth as a sound source. No other recorded voices, sounds, samples, or instruments were used in any way." Sure, there was Björk's Medulla and Petra Haden's all-voice rendition of The Who Sell Out—but in techno? The surprise is that Open Wide works purely as music: Play it not knowing how it was made, and it simply sounds playful, occasionally freaky, and sometimes beautiful, most especially on slow grooves that bubble up to and over the surface, like "Crazy Place" and "First Love." The prize, though, is "Anyway," the kind of chant-along club anthem so simple and enchanting that there should be more of its like. But as Aju demonstrates throughout, even the stuff that seems obvious oftentimes isn't.
