This post contains spoilers for episode 6 of "Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."
The latest episode of "The Rings of Power," aptly titled "Udûn," which means "hell" in Sindarin, culminates in a reveal that is both sudden and shocking. While fans of the show were aware that a part of the Southlands would soon be transformed into Mordor, the manner in which the events are triggered takes even the mighty Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) by surprise. Adar's (Joseph Mawle) grand plan is thus revealed: he had always meant to use the hilt of Sauron's sword to trigger the eruption of Orodruin, or Mount Doom, which would render the Southlands barren and create a hellish realm for the orcs.
The creation of Mordor, especially Mount Doom, is key to the events that will transpire in the Second and Third Ages of Middle-earth. Apart from serving as a lair for Sauron,...

"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" isn't the first time trolls have tried to break up a fellowship, and it isn't the first time we've heard the name Isildur, either. With its sprawling cast, it could be easy to lose track of names and faces in the series, including who is new and who we've already seen in the Peter Jackson live-action adaptations: The "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" movie trilogies, adapted from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. In the third and latest "Rings of Power" episode, "Adar," there are two important new/old faces that pop up: Isildur and his father Elendil, while the name of Isildur's brother Anárion also receives a mention.
So who exactly are these guys? Well, let's backtrack to 2001, when Peter Jackson's first "Lord of the Rings" movie thundered into theaters. If you remember the prologue to "The Fellowship of the Ring,...

This Lord of the Rings article contains spoilers for The Rings of Power.
This week’s episode of Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power introduces Elendil, one of the very few characters in the series who also appears in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy. But if you blink you will miss him.
In the battle sequence of The Fellowship of the Rings‘ prologue, the character is played by Peter McKenzie. He has a go at fighting Sauron, dies immediately, and his sword is smashed into bits and remains that way until Aragorn puts them all back together again in Return of the King. Yes, Elendil’s appearance is brief, but one that casts a shadow over the entire Lord of the Rings saga, and his presence is felt even more keenly in the books.
“From when I read the books and how often he’s referenced it’s clear...

Overlong and erratically paced, Brendan Kyle Cochrane’s New York City-based “Equal Standard” opens with a self-conscious scene that heavy-handedly hints at an impending tragedy. There in the sun-dappled kitchen of the happy Jones family, Detective Chris (Tobias Truvillion), Sergeant Jackie (Syleena Johnson) and their adorable daughter lovingly go about their rosy morning routine, while an over-sentimental score embellished with stark notes of caution (one of the film’s various recurring motifs of unsubtlety) accompanies the perfect picture. As the doting husband and wife exchange their daily goodbyes before taking off for their high-risk professions, there is so much weight and emphasis placed on the concerned Jackie when she says “Be safe” that you prophetically know Chris is soon going to need that advice.

Over four decades after first filing suit to guarantee her right to terminate her pregnancy, Norma McCorvey is set to star in a new film as an elderly woman who is firmly anti-abortion.
McCorvey, who under the pseudonym Jane Roe began what would become the historic Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade, later converted to Catholicism and became a pro-life activist. She was arrested while protesting pro-choice Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotamayor's Senate hearing in 2009, and now, will take her crusade to the big screen in a new low-budget thriller called "Doonby," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
A thriller that will place McCorvey in a subplot in which she works to convince a younger woman not to have an abortion, the film's director, Peter McKenzie, says that he's not advocating for either side, but felt that having McCorvey's authenticity in the film would be a boon to the production (not...
