Retro-country newcomer Dillon Carmichael salutes the King of Rock & Roll with an intimate cover of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” posted in honor of the late icon’s birthday. Presley would have turned 84 on January 8th.
Dedicating the performance to his grandfather Harold, who he says “taught me to sing with these songs” in the video’s description, Carmichael leans into his neo-traditional reputation, presenting the tender ballad in raw acoustic fashion. With his commanding baritone on full display, the Kentucky native delivers the whole track in one uncut take,...

Can’t Help Falling In Love was originally written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss. It was performed by Elvis Presley for his movie Blue Hawaii in 1961. By the next year his version of the song had topped the British charts and become a huge sensation in England and in America. Elvis Presley’s voice was loved just about everywhere he went, and this song was eventually sung by other groups that put their own spin on the tune, such as UB40, a British reggae band that topped the Us and UK charts with this song in 1993.

George David Weiss, the man behind classic tunes "What a Wonderful World" and "Can't Help Falling in Love" has died at his home in New Jersey. He was 89. The songwriter also penned "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" for The Tokens with Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore.
His other credits include "Confess", which was recorded by Patti Page, Perry Como's "Surrender" and Sammy Davis, Jr.'s 1946 hit "Mr. Wonderful". Weiss was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984.
A former president of the Songwriters Guild of America, Weiss, was born in Manhattan in 1921 and fought his family over his passion for music - his mother wanted her son to become a lawyer. He graduated from the Julliard School in New York with a degree in music and went on to serve as a military bandleader in World War II before becoming a full-time songwriter.
