Today on Monday morning commemorated Al Roker’s 45th year as a member of the NBC family, by offering up some sweet words for “the beating heart of this show” and cuing up a throwback video that involved… penguins?
Roker’s career with NBC began in 1978 at Wkyc in Cleveland, which at the time was an NBC owned-and-operated station. In late 1983, he was named the regular weeknight weathercaster at Wnbc-tv in New York, replacing 27-year veteran Dr. Frank Field. From 1990 to ’95, Roker filled in for Willard Scott on Today, and come early 1996, upon Scott’s announced retirement, Roker received the regular weekday weatherman slot.

David Ushery, a veteran of Wnbc who has worked as an anchor on the station’s news programs for years, has been given a new role – co-anchoring at 4 p.m. and the economically critical 11 p.m. newscast.
He replaces Stefan Holt, who is returning to Wmaq, the company’s owned-and-operated affiliate in Chicago. Ushery will join Natalie Pasquarella, who has been co-anchoring at 11 p.m. since 2016.
“David is a talented, experienced journalist who takes a thoughtful approach to every story he covers. As an anchor, he’s an incredible newsroom leader who cares about the entire team,” said Amy Morris, vice president of news for NBC 4 New York, in a prepared statement. “I’m delighted that David is taking on this new role.” Ushery had previously been stationed as a co-anchor at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The New York late-news post can be an important milestone for any TV journalist.

"30 Rock" brought in a bevy of high-profile women in media for its Thursday episode, including Gayle King.
In the show, Liz Lemon gets an award from a women's media organization. When she goes to accept it, she has to contend with the machinations of her best friend, Jenna — and if there's one thing King knows about, it's having a best friend who overshadows you. (Just don't say Oprah's name out loud — she can hear us!)
The episode also saw cameos by Wendy Williams and New York legend Sue Simmons.
King tweeted about her appearance before the show aired:...

Liz Lemon tied the knot last week proving there’s hope for everyone in this strange world. So will she get pregnant with little Rufus T. Barleysheath before the series finale? Only time will tell. Until then, Lemon can bask in the glory of her 80 Under 80 award. While riding her marriage high, Ms. Elizabeth Lemon — she’s keeping her name — found out she’d been named one of the women in entertainment who aren’t Betty White. She was thrilled with the honor, particularly when she learned the ceremony would be broadcast on Lifetime.com/garbagefile.

On Tuesday night's edition of Current TV's Joy Behar: Say Anything, residents of the New York area were treated to an interview with former Wnbc-4 anchor Sue Simmons, her first since leaving the local channel in June, after a 32-year stint alongside Chuck Scarborough at 11pm, and a 27-year run on Live At Five with the likes of current CNN crank Jack Cafferty. Displaying the kind of loose wit that characterized her career, Simmons joked that her replacement, 37 year-old Shiba Russell, is "an old 37."...

Three months after New York local news station Wnbc announced that it would not be renewing the contract of network veteran Sue Simmons, the evening news anchor delivered her last broadcast on Friday night. Photos: The Most Talked-About TV News Faces Simmons, who joined the network in 1980, had hoped to renew her contract but was informed of her forced retirement in 2010. “This week I was thinking, somebody’s made a mistake,” Simmons said during her appearance on the 11 p.m. news. “But, you know, everything comes to an end at some point, and this is

Despite multiple social media campaigns to salvage her post at Wnbc, veteran news anchor Sue Simmons is on track to exit the station on Friday, June 15th.
Simmons' final newscast will air during the 11pm slot opposite co-anchor Chuck Scarborough, ending the 32 year run of New York's longest running anchor team.
The 69-year old's firing back in March sparked heavy backlash from Simmons' loyal fans and even a #SaveSueSimmons hashtag, Facebook group, and Tumblr account devoted to keeping the longtime anchor on air.
Despite the heartfelt attempts, however, not everyone's sad to see her go. The New York Post reported on disgruntled Wnbc employees who have come to resent Simmons for her whopping $5 million a year salary and alleged bad attitude.
Simmons' history of on-air gaffes, most notably her infamous "What the f**k" faux pas, and admittance to boozing on the job probably hasn't helped save her career either.

If you don’t want your off-the-cuff words to go viral, don’t chat near the mics. President Obama is learning that lesson the hard away after he was overheard telling outgoing Russian president Dmitri Medvedev he’ll have more flexibility on security issues after he wins reelection this November. Whoops.
But the president isn’t the first person to be caught off-guard in a microphone blooper. Behold, five other candid moments that could’ve been prevented with one measly reminder: Hey you, there’s a mic right there.

Loyal fans of veteran news anchor Sue Simmons may be distraught over news of her firing, but don't discount the naysayers to come out criticizing her reported $5 million salary.
The New York Post dishes out on Wnbc's internal struggle on whether or not to cut Simmons from the roll call after 32-years, as more disgruntled station employees aired their grievances over her inflated salary and alleged badditude.
A source from the Channel 4 station said of Simmons' salary, "It is a lot of money, and many people have been under the impression that Sue had been phoning it in for a while." (For more snipey insider gossip, head to The Post's take on the drama)
Yet, the backlash doesn't seem to be getting to Simmons' surprisingly devoted following. Both Twitter and Facebook have given rise to a #SaveSueSimmons hashtag and subsequent Save Sue Simmons Facebook Page.

If you live in New York, or ever have, you’ve probably already gotten word that newscaster Sue Simmons, who’s been with Wnbc since 1980, would not have her contract renewed this June. Maybe your Facebook page is covered with as many salutes as mine. As soon as her friend Cindy Adams broke the news, longtime fans started sharing their surprise, along with their memories and a longshot attempt to save her job.

Wnbc-tv is saying goodbye to longtime anchor Sue Simmons. The New York City station will not renew Simmons' contract when it ceases in June, spokesperson Dawn Rowan tells The Hollywood Reporter. "We have tremendous respect and admiration for Sue Simmons. For decades, Sue has been a critical part of New York’s longest tenured anchor team in the city and has more than earned her iconic status," said a statement issued by Rowan. "We have been engaged in ongoing conversations with Sue about her transition from Wnbc and will continue to work with her on plans to celebrate her

Warning: Video is Nsfw on account of a curse word.
Sue Simmons, the beloved New York Wnbc anchor who gave us that little gem of a YouTube sensation almost four years ago, has been booted from her station after more than 30 years, reports the New York Post.
Last week, the station told Simmons her contract would not be renewed, and June will be the end for her. The Post reports that Simmons, 68, is the top-paid anchorwoman at any local station in the country. Chuck Scarborough, Simmons co-anchor, is also 68 and has been given three more years on his contract.
In January, Simmons was removed from the 6 o'clock news, joining Scarborough only for the 11 p.m. slot.
Did her cursing blunder from 2008 really have any bearing on her being let go? Is this a case of blatant sexism? Or is something else at work here?...

Local news anchor and Wnbc veteran Sue Simmons has been given the axe by television executives after an epic 32 years on air.
The New York Post delivers the sad news that Simmons' contract will be up in June, ending the longest-running anchor team that is the legendary Sue Simmons and co-anchor Chuck Scarborough duo.
Scarborough will remain for at least three more years.
Simmons began her career at Channel 4 in 1980 and as is the highest paid anchorwoman for local stations in the country.
Her more than three decades of airtime saw some classic television moments, most notably and hilariously including her F-Bomb wielding remark to Scarborough in 2008.
The Awl eulogizes her career at Wnbc quite perfectly:
Sue Simmons has been the face of local news here in New York for literally as long as I can remember. A hard-charging, swear-dropping, before-broadcast-drinking, poker-playing, fun-loving broad, she has been exactly what...

HollywoodNews.com: Nile Rodgers, Paul Shaffer, Michael Douglas, Cissy Houston, Felicia Collins, Russ Titelman, Sylvia Rhone, Nona Hendryx, and Sue Simmons were among the luminaries who attended the Monday night memorial service for Nick Ashford at Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church. Jim Bessman was kind enough to write us an account of what went on because I could not be there. No sign of Diana Ross, Chaka Khan or Whitney Houston, but plenty of towering talent from Roberta Flack to Edgar Bronfman, Jr. participated. Nick’s death is a huge blow to his family, friends and the world. –Rf
To those who spoke on his behalf at his memorial service yesterday, Nickolas Ashford was a giant, a saint, a talent whose contributions, as Vogue’s Andre Leon Talley dramatically stated, matched those of the likes of James Brown, Nina Simone, James Baldwin, Dr. Maya Angelou, Ralph Ellison and Duke Ellington,...

A local anchor's recent F-bomb on live TV hasn't seemed to hurt her career.
WNBC's Sue Simmons caused a stir earlier this month when she swore during a live promo for the station's 11 p.m. newscast. She apologized for the remark during the 11 p.m. newscast and then again in a statement. The controversy didn't stop the NBC O&O from giving Simmons the choice 6 p.m. newscast duties with co-anchor Chuck Scarborough.
Simmons and Scarborough have been a three-decade tradition on the New York airwaves. The two already co-anchor the 11 p.m. newscast, while Simmons co-anchors the 5 p.m. newscast and Scarborough is the 7 p.m. "New York Nightly News" anchor.
The changes are effective Monday.
