His films from his early years, the 1970s, had him play openly villainous roles to characters with many shades of grey, to budding hero. While it is impossible to include them all, here are some of our favourites to rewatch before the Superstar’s Jailer with director Nelson Dilipkumar hits theatres next week. KollywoodOne of Shoba’s strongest assets was her self-confidence and she remained unfazed even while acting along senior and more established actors. CV AravindA few days earlier she had walked up to the dais to receive her National Award for Best Actress for the offbeat film Pasi, clad in all finery. But the world came crashing down for those who loved Shoba, when on May 1, 1980, she was found to have killed herself in her house in Chennai, then Madras. A controversy soon erupted over her death after her mother, Prema, a supporting actor in Malayalam cinema, claimed that it was a homicide. Accusing fingers were pointed at Shoba's husband of over a year and a half, acclaimed cinematographer-director Balu Mahendra. The case, however, fizzled out after the suicide theory gained ground and forensic investigations ruled out murder as the cause of death. Thus ended the career of a child star...

Flix FlashbackMuch of the film is based on Pudumaipithan’s ‘Chittrannai’, with the author’s favourite themes of feminism and male chauvinism underlined in every other scene.Nandhu SundaramI was in my teens when I saw Uthiripookkal (Scattered Flowers; 1979) on TV. I was impressed by what I later realised was the neo-realism of the film. But at first viewing, the movie remained in its allure most elusive. What did director Mahendran get right that others before and since go so wrong? How was he different from Bharathiraja? Why was Uthirpookal relegated to being 16 Vayathinile’s poorer cousin? The questions came from all sides with every viewing of Mahendran’s classic. Uthiripookkal had an urgency that emanated from the director, who populated the film with characters you can’t easily root for. The engine is its main character’s villainy. Actor Vijayan’s Sundaravadivelu is the embodiment of evil itself. His...

ReviewAs a festival release, Satish Vegesna’s film offers neither intellectual entertainment nor emotional excitement.Krishna SripadaThere is a reason why we have two different words – action and overaction, with entirely different meanings. Satish Vegesna, who made the much acclaimed Shatamanam Bhavathi, comes back with a sugary syrup of a movie. Entha Manchivadavuraa, like its title, is so over-the-top that you would prefer watching Brahmotsavam again. Balu is an orphan and now he is altruistic (almost a disorder-level altruism), donning several roles to give people relationships they seek – as a brother, a grandson, a son and so on. He takes this idea one step forward to start a company called All is Well Emotion Suppliers – that gives people emotions they miss in real life. Balu is never seen charging money from any of the people who come to him, so no one knows how he manages all that travel and the posh office.

KollywoodRajinikanth was as effortless playing a godman as he was in playing a raw, frightening villain. Kavitha MuralidharanRajinikanth wanted to be a villain and as one, he looked effortless on screen. He decidedly revelled in roles that had a shade of negativity. Infusing style with menace, Rajinikanth brought to his negative characters an elan not many villains of Tamil cinema could boast of. If only he had his way, Rajinikanth would have perhaps gone on to become Tamil cinema’s quintessential villain. But, Tamil cinema had different plans for him. Despite his admission that he preferred doing ‘commercial’ roles which eventually boxed him into a stereotype, Rajinikanth was a fine actor. He was as effortless playing a godman as he was in playing a raw, frightening villain. He could be a rustic village head as also the suave educated man. From comedy to melodrama, he was comfortable in many genres.

BlogA journalist recalls her meetings with J Mahendran, a filmmaker who has given us some of Tamil cinema's best characters.Kavitha MuralidharanI first met J Mahendran in 2013 for an interview. Sometime last year, I met him again at an awards event, without realising it would be my last meeting with him. In between, whenever we met, Mahendran exuded the same warmth that he did when we met for the first time. The 2013 meeting was not easy. Mahendran was contemplating the idea of directing a movie after a long hiatus but was still keeping aloof. I convinced him through a friend – Manivannan – who had produced a programme on the director for Kalaignar TV – to give me an interview. But once the ice was broken, Mahendran was in full flow, without any inhibitions – just as he was in his films. The director was in his trademark white shirt and pants when we went to his Pallikaranai house.

So, the expectations were high. What the makers didn't account for was the sensibilities of the Telugu audience. The guy is horny, and six months into the relationship, he is disappointed he is not getting much action. They break up over this. Tammy,...
