Dusty Hill Remembered: MTV’s Martha Quinn, Flea, Texas Governor & More Pay Tribute To Zz Top Bassist
Refresh for updates… Zz Top bassist Dusty Hill is being remembered by friends, musical colleagues, and even the governor of Texas paying tribute.
“Rock and roll has been stopped in its tracks,” tweeted Martha Quinn, one of MTV’s original veejays whose tenure at the channel coincided with Zz Top’s music video heyday. “Dusty Hill, you will always be bad, nationwide and much missed.”
Hill’s death was announced today by bandmates Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard. The bassist was 72.
Said Kiss vocalist Paul Stanley, “Always a gentleman from the days of us opening for them through the recent days of them opening for us. I don’t know what to say but ‘Thank you’ and ‘Rest however you damn well choose!'”
Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea mourned the loss on Twitter while celebrating his unique talents. “Ahhhh man, I love Dusty Hill. A true rocker. What a straight jammer,...

After selling her attractive Los Feliz home to Oxycontin heiress Madeleine Sackler, prolific pop music songwriter Ali Tamposi has abruptly shifted residential gears, trading the hipster-approved chicness of L.A.’s Eastside for the relaxed surfer bro vibes of Malibu’s heavily celebrified Point Dume neighborhood. Property records reveal the 30-year-old Florida native has paid nearly $4 million for the longtime home of MTV’s original VJ Martha Quinn and her husband, musician Jordan Tarlow.
Because the transaction transpired off market, photos and details of the house are spare, at best. The Hamptons-style abode sits on a small gated street shared with five other similarly-styled residences. Built in 2003, the two-story, shingle-sided house packs four bedrooms and three baths into about 3,100 square feet of living space, though those figures likely do not include the substantial detached guesthouse, which offers garage bays and almost certainly at least one more bedroom and bath. The first Strokes album in seven years picks up pretty much where the last one, 2013’s Comedown Machine, left off — another study in what LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy once called “borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered Eighties.” Few bands so embody a place and time as the Strokes did New York City in the Giuliani-twilight/pre-smoking-ban era, but now they seem more interested in Martha Quinn’s New York than the one they once defined.

The first thing you want from a history of MTV is to get dunked in the hot-but-cool nostalgia of it, and the fast, fleet documentary “I Want My MTV” delivers those 1980s goods about as good as you can get. Here’s “Video Killed the Radio Star,” the novelty single by the Buggles that launched the channel on Aug. 1, 1981 — a tune that, in hindsight, sounds as sing-song catchy in its percolating bliss as a Divertimento by Mozart. Here are the five original VJs — shaggy Mark Goodman, earnest Alan Hunter, snarky Martha Quinn, jovial J.J. Jackson, and hipstery Nina Blackwood — fumbling around against a set that looks more like Wayne Campbell’s basement than a television studio, tossing off we’re-making-this-up-on-the-spot-and-we-know-it patter that became the casual formative version of “attitude.”

Elections have consequences, and by electing Taylor Swift as the American Music Awards’ artist of the year, pop fans gave the superstar another platform from which to spread her crazy, incendiary, rabble-rousing entreaties to… find a polling place. “Every single award given out tonight was voted on by the people,” Swift said, upon picking up her third and final award of the evening, “and you know what else is voted on by the people is the midterm elections Nov. 6. Get out and vote.” As if we needed a reason to like her about 25% more right now.
No one would accuse the AMAs of getting repeatedly or unusually political in the broadcast that took place from L.A. Microsoft Theater Tuesday night, but one presenter did take a cue from Swift, and that was presenting comedian Billy Eichner, who took the audience to church as he sermonized, “Young people of America,...

A little under a year ago we got tremendously excited when we learned that VH1 Classic was going to be reborn as MTV Classic. Visions of Remote Control marathons filled our heads along with the chance to finally see if lost classics like The State, The Ben Stiller Show, The Tom Green Show and The Andy Milonakis Show lived up to our memories. The MTV vault was overflowing with half-forgotten gems and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to see them again.

If MTV Classic is anything like MTV, it'll be on the air for a month before people start complaining they don't play enough music. The "new" channel launched on August 1st, the 35th anniversary of MTV's debut, opening up the vaults to a pop-culture treasure trove that's been gathering dust for years. They should have done this years ago. MTV Classic wants to establish its music cred early on — they were wise to spend most of the first day playing classic Unplugged episodes, with Nirvana, Erykah Badu and R.E.M. The...

Following the announcement this afternoon that musician Glenn Frey died today in New York at age 67, tributes from those in the worlds of music, entertainment, media and politics are quickly pouring in for the Eagles co-founder. Friends, peers and admirers shared condolences and memories of the hitmaker and occasional actor whose music helped define mainstream American rock music in the 1970s.
Shortly after word spread, Frey’s bandmate and fellow Eagles co-founder Don Henley paid tribute to his friend in a touching statement. “He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction. But, the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken, even during the 14 years that the Eagles were dissolved,” Henley wrote. “We were two young men who made the pilgrimage to Los Angeles with the same dream: to make our mark in the music industry — and with perseverance, a deep love of music,...

I’m a bad Full Moon fan. I really am… I can now cross Bad Channels off my list of Full Moon flicks I know of but haven’t seen.
Yet another collaboration between Charles Band and his Subspecies director Ted Nicolaou, Bad Channels tells the story of Dangerous Dan (Hipp) a newly employed DJ at Kdul who is returning to the airwaves after a six month suspension by the FCC for a stunt he pulled while on the air. Covering Dan’s return to the airwaves is Lisa Cummings (Quinn) who doesn’t trust Dan and thinks he’s a hoax. She becomes the butt of his jokes when she spots a UFO landing near the radio station and Dan is quick to laugh until the alien breaks into Kdul.

Before MTV became a breeding ground for fist pumpers and troublesome teen moms, it actually played music videos. And today, we're paying tribute to the people who introduced them: The MTV VJ.In honor of Pauly Shore's 45th birthday, we decided to see how all the VJs of the '80s and '90s have aged through the years.Pauly definitely looks a lot different than his days as The Weasel. Long gone is that long curly hair and his crazy Steven Tyler-esque styling. After leaving MTV, he found acting success in a string of comedies after his days on MTV -- starring in flicks like "Son-In-Law," "Bio-Dome" and "In the Army Now."After that he made a mockumentary called "Pauly Shore Is Dead" and can most recently be seen in Internet videos on Funny or Die and YouTube. He's also currently on tour doing standup. How have...

Holy Mother of Martha Quinn: Ratings for Thursday's 2012 MTV Video Music Awards went in One Direction, and that direction was straight to Nielsen hell. After scoring its biggest audience ever last year (12.4 million viewers), this year's kudos saw a total ratings collapse. Per Nielsen, tune-in fell by more than 50 percent, with just 6.1 million people remembering to watch MTV's big show. How bad is that for MTV? Well, this past June, sister network Bet's annual music and culture awards actually drew a bigger crowd: 7.4 million viewers. The show didn't even do well with MTV's core demo of viewers between ages 12 to 34, falling by a similar percentage among that age group as with all viewers. It's hard to explain such a massive audience drop-off, but there are a few obvious reasons. For one, the VMAs shifted from Sundays to Thursdays, so perhaps some folks didn't...

Even as he readies to sing an epic song of Hercules, Brett Ratner is using the hand not currently plucking his lute to grab fistfuls of a more modern mythology—namely, the saga of MTV, and how it defied the gods by giving man the ability to see music as a series of loosely related images, then paid dreadful penance as Martha Quinn was transformed into a goat. Variety reports that Ratner—a veteran of the network thanks to his videos for artists like Mariah Carey and Madonna—is close to a deal to produce and possibly direct an adaptation ...

Brett Ratner has directed music videos for artists like Mariah Carey and Madonna, and now he's hoping to make a movie about the place they debuted. Variety reports that Ratner is in talks with Sony to produce (and potentially direct) an adaptation of the oral history I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution, which tracks the influential music network's early days, long before anyone had heard of Snooki and Pauly D. Go ahead and fantasy-cast the network's first crop of VJs! Jennifer Lawrence as Nina Blackwood? Ellen Page as Martha Quinn?...

Could the endless weeks of rampant speculation be over? Is it possible that we finally know what Brett Ratner’s next directing project after Hercules is going to be? Not necessarily, but Variety has some news on a new film that he’s definitely involved in as a producer, and that he might end up directing if things work out. His Rat Entertainment is in talks to adapt “I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution,” a chronicle of the early days of MTV written by Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum. Ratner has earned a lot of criticism over the years due to his Add directing style, but what better project for him to take on than a historical look back at the people who invented vapid, quick-cut nonsense? Factor in that the man’s last film, Tower Heist, was actually mostly unoffensive, and we may be at the beginnings of a Brett Ratner...

Jani Lane, the golden-haired former lead singer of 1980s hair-metal band Warrant, was found dead on Thursday in a hotel room in Woodland Hills, California.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, police found the body of Lane (born John Kennedy Oswald), 47, at a Comfort Inn, with no cause of death available at press time. Lane was best known for the Warrant hit "Cherry Pie," which he wrote and which featured a guitar solo by Poison's C.C. DeVille. The double entendre-filled video for the song — packed, of course, with a bevy of video vixens — was a staple of MTV programming when it was released in 1990.
The singer was born in Akron, Ohio, on February 1, 1964. He began his career as a teenage drummer before moving to Florida and playing in a series of metal bands.

Video of the Year Week continues here in the MTV Newsroom. Yesterday we took a look at the latest entry into the Video of the Year portfolio, and today celebrates a clip that is not only for a great song but also has an MTV tie-in and is relevant to an anniversary today. Exactly one year ago, Lehman Brothers, one of the most massive financial services firms in the world, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which profoundly escalated the onset of the current recession and represented the largest bankruptcy in the country's history. The corporation's involvement in the investment of subprime mortgages lead to the loss of billions of dollars and the profound devaluation of the group's stock. It's a crisis that has yet to resolve itself and will probably be felt for years to come.

Even more viral video now from Watchmen, although I have to admit, this is the worst of the three we've seen. The concept behind it is good enough, but in never really goes anywhere or shows us anything about the movie we need to know.
Set in 1983 on the Veidt Music Network, named for Watchmen member Adrian Veidt (Ozymandias), the video is a spoof of the early days of MTV, back when it played music. Your host for the countdown, Who Watches the Watchmen, is Jenny Jones, who has shades of Martha Quinn. I got really excited at first, though, because I thought this would have an actual music video.
