Seeing is not the same thing as knowing. And certainly not the same thing as understanding.
Never before in the history of our species have humans been asked to process so much visual information all the time, often at the same time. Yet whether the endlessly multiplying screens we direct our eyeballs to are actually causing us to be smarter or wiser or more empathetic is still unclear. That’s not news to anyone familiar with terms like “cut through the noise,” or aware of the impulse toward “curation” to find what’s actually good or what anything actually means. Movies and TV, though, have always suggested “seeing” is the highest value: the cameo of a beloved star, the Easter egg, the desire to visualize anything and everything in pixel-perfect VFX, “you’ll believe a man can fly.”
Some of the most compelling visual media of 2023 went in a different direction.

Katie Thurston is switching up her dating game.
The Bachelor/Bachelorette star has officially joined the cast of The CW's FBoy Island Season 3.
Thurston's reality TV journey began as one of the contestants on The Bachelor Season 25, aka Matt James' historic season.
After standing up to the bullying inside the mansion, Thurston became a fan-favorite on the ABC dating series.
After striking a chord with viewers, Thurston headlined The Bachelorette Season 17.
Ultimately, she chose Blake Boynes, but their relationship hit a snag months after the August 2021 season finale.
It was then revealed that Thurston was dating John Hersey, but they broke up last summer.
"This decision was not made lightly, and it was obviously not an easy one to make," John said in an Instagram Story statement at the time.
"I appreciate every one of you that has supported us throughout this journey. We could not (and would not) be here without you.

It’s been a few years since the roses ran out, and Katie Thurston is still looking for love. The star of Season 17 of “The Bachelorette” has joined the cast of “FBoy Island.”
The series follows three women who move to a tropical paradise where they’re joined by 26 men — 13 self-proclaimed “Nice Guys” looking for love, and 13 self-proclaimed “FBoys,” there to compete for cash. The women will navigate the dating pool together with the hope of finding a lasting love connection. The finale reveals who is a Nice Guy, who is an FBoy, who the women ultimately choose, and who walks away with the prize money.
Thurston first appeared on Season 25 of “The Bachelor,” where she was a contestant as Matt James looked for a partner, eventually choosing Rachael Kirkconnell. Thurston then led her own season of “The Bachelorette” and ended up engaged to Blake Moynes, though the couple ended their relationship months later.

Looking for the most dramatic Bachelor Nation breakup ever? It's certainly not these two. Just days after Katie Thurston and John Hersey announced their split on social media, the exes reunited at the San Diego County Fair on June 23 for a fun afternoon with friends. As seen on Bachelor in Paradise star Tammy Kay Ly's Instagram Stories, the group enjoyed a road trip to the Southern California summer event, where they rode on carnival rides, indulged in fried food and snapped some pics in a photo booth. And while Katie didn't share any photos featuring her ex, a full day at the fair proved these two aren't exactly enemies. On June 24, John shared a group selfie from their outing, writing in the...

Despite going their separate ways, John Hersey is still sticking up for Katie Thurston. After a Bachelor fan account shared news of the pair's split on June 21, a follower wrote, "I feel like Katie is the reason she can't get a guy." However, John quickly defended his ex. "You will speak a finite number of words throughout your life," he replied. "I urge you to speak more kindly, especially about someone you don't know. I have never been so supported or unconditionally loved by a partner. Assuming and implying that Katie is doing something wrong does not sit right with me. The internet can be a mean place—let's not add to it." Katie and John announced...

Primed to harsh any buzz you might still be enjoying from the exhilarating international spy high jinks of “Mission Impossible: Fallout,” Peter Berg’s “Mile 22” is an angry, hyperviolent downer of an action flick that is the August blowout-sale of its ilk: loud and desperate.
Mixing obnoxious geopolitical cynicism, fashionable fight incoherence and — still? really? — the fading appeal of Mark Wahlberg in grim-hero mode, the movie feels like Berg in a state of retaliatory cinematic aggression after the lackluster showing of his recent real-life-bravery tales, “Deepwater Horizon” and “Patriots Day.”
The fictional “Mile 22” — another secret-ops saga about last-resort warriors, albeit with none of the escapist appeal of the “Mission: Impossible” movies — is the movie equivalent of being shouted at by your drunk ex-Army dad about how stupid and pointless your taste in popcorn fare is, and why can’t there be more bloody combat scenes with foreigners?
